    This is a commercial complex that opened in September 2015 built on the remains of a national registered tangible cultural property, the former Nanzu Ice Plant. The facility houses NanZ Kitchen, a restaurant that mainly serves food from the sea and the mountains of Shimoda with concept of “the dining table of the Minami-Izu district”, a café, a sushi restaurant and an information center for outdoor activities in Izu. It also holds community-based markets with the cooperation of local farmers and others as well as all kinds of events. The nearest station is Shimoda Station.

    Really good drinks, tasting food, very friendly staff, happy atmosphere - perfect place to enjoy a meal in Shimoda.

    Located in the parking lot next to the Higashi Izu Town Office, this morning market is held from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday and on holidays. With fresh seafood such as the Inatori specialty of kinmedai (red bream), dried fish, processed marine products, just-harvested vegetables and seasonal fruits, patrons can buy local foodstuffs at lower prices than regular store prices. Local gourmet foods can be enjoyed on the spot and the kinmedai kama-meshi (a rice, red bream and vegetable dish served in a small pot) is popular. When you order it, they give you a free bowl of kinme arajiru (fishhead soup made with red bream). This is a popular place to get breakfast on a trip around Izu. The closest station is Izu-Inatori Station.

    This is an old himono (dried fish) speciality shop with a long history, originally established as a can manufacturer in 1900. They aim to give their lineup of himono the ultimate freshness and flavor, with each prepared carefully one by one with only the best fish and natural salt. They offer several kinds of seasonal himono including “himodori ji-kinmedai (red bream rarely caught off the Shimoda coast), horse mackeral, kinmedai (red bream), ebo sea bream, and silver stripe round herring. The very Japanese building with its tiled roof has an atmosphere that welcomes tourists.

    Koganest is a free rest area with a cafe in Koganezaki Park in Nishiizu Town, Kamo County, Shizuoka Prefecture. They also sell gifts such as the wonderfully created products created from the Nishiizu area. The cafe serves some special Nishiizu snacks like tokoroten (gelidium jelly made into thin strips and eaten with vinegar or syrup), soft ice cream and cake, etc. Especially popular is the large kakigori (shaved ice), shaped like Mt. Fuji and available only during the summer months. This magnificent looking dessert has stacks of shaved ice on top of ice cream and drizzled with Blue Hawaii syrup and condensed milk.

    西伊豆町の黄金崎公園にある休憩所です。ジオパークのビジターセンターも兼ねているようです。お土産やソフトクリームなどの軽食もあり、栗のソフトクリームが美味しかったです。

    This meat shop founded in 1933 and located in Matsuzaki Town, Kamo County, Shizuoka Prefecture, sells the finest meat including Matsusaka beef, Egoma pork and Awao chicken. The shop focuses on preparing dishes using local ingredients which often appear on TV and in magazines. Of those dishes, the crispy kawanori croquette mixed with plenty of their specially made kawanori (river seaweed), and their miso pork with flavor of cherry tree leaves, are particularly popular. Their specially made pork cutlet sandwich is sold every Saturday but it’s only available in limited quantities.

    A well-established Japanese cake shop located just outside the Izu-Okawa Station that sells many kinds of sweets and cakes loved since the Showa period. Popular as an Izu souvenir is the cake which looks just like a turbo shell. This unique looking cake is packed inside with homemade sweet bean jam containing whole beans. The cake shop sells lots of other products that are loved as local snacks, such as butter flavored pound cake, and ‘Izu no yama’, a Japanese confection containing one whole chestnut, and many other homemade cakes too.

    This well established cake shop in Shimoda City, Shizuoka Prefecture was founded in 1948. The shop makes and sells a variety of products such as confectionery and Japanese style roll cakes associated with the city of Shimoda which was the first Japanese port to open up to the outside world. Their most well known product is the Harris Milk Anpan because it is said that Townsend Harris, the first American Consul to serve in Japan, drank his favorite milk for the first time in Japan here in Shimoda. The soft and moist anpan bread roll filled with plenty of homemade strained bean paste and soft butter is popular as a souvenir.

    ペリーロードでも歩こうかと立ち寄った際に伺いました。購入は牛乳アンパン。パンんは昔ながらの柔らかパン。中の餡はしっとりと滑らかに香りが良かったです。下田に立ち寄るのなら一つ購入して食べ歩きしてみるのも良いと思います。

    Located in the town of Matsuzaki in Kamo County, Shizuoka Prefecture, Baigetsu-en is a venerable confectionary that has sold both Japanese and Western sweets since 1931. It is said to be the original home of one of Matsuzaki’s most famous sweets, Cherry Leaf Mochi. Consisting of mochi and sweet bean paste wrapped up in a leaf from a local cherry tree, this confection combines a salty flavor with a delicate sweetness as it melts in one’s mouth. Chohachi no Tatsu, a Japanese-style confection made by coating two layers of mochi in fine Wasanbon sugar, is also highly regarded. It also sells a wide variety of other sweets, including roll cakes, Monaka (bean jam between two crisp mochi wafers) and Kintsuba (gelatin covered with a rice batter).

    This longstanding dried marine product shop is located along National Route 135 Higashiizu Town, Kamo County, Shizuoka Prefecture. The signboard with the big red bream serves as the landmark. It’s known for its sun-dried marine products without any additives, and you can always see various fish drying outside the shop. With the sea breeze blowing over them from the nearby ocean and the sun shining above, these fine products are soft and offer a superb salty taste. Especially popular are the high-quality “Inatori Kinme” red bream caught in Inatori, which come both dried and boiled.

    宿泊施設で食べたあじのひものの味が忘れられなく、立ち寄りました。主人は隣のLAWSONにいました。地産物の金目鯛のコーナーなどもあります。スペースは広くないですが、物揃えは良いと思います。

The madeleine cakes which Yukio Mishima, who spent his holidays in Shimoda, called “Japan’s best madeleine” has a moist texture without using milk or butter, and the flavor has remained unchanged since the 1950s. Also the lemon cake using natural lemon is a famous product that has continued for more than 50 years and is sold as a set with madeleine cakes.

    古き昭和の時代からあるこの店は、今もなおその趣は変わらず”洋菓子”店としてあります。今は、甘さも見た目も増してその味に慣れてしまってますが、控えめで上品な味は他の店にはない、この店の味を保っています。マドレーヌやレモンケーキは当時高級菓子で特別な日やご褒美の品でした。懐かしさと健闘している姿が店の構えからも伝わってきました。

    The JA Izu Mikan Winery, located in the Inatori district in Higashiizu Town, produces mikan (satsuma orange) wine. Besides mikan wine, made using locally-grown mikan oranges, the Winery also makes and sells other types of fruit wine, jams, etc. Visitors can taste the mikan wine (the Winery is almost the only place in Japan where this is made), and also bayberry wine, aloe wine etc. The Winery offers free tours of the production facility, after which visitors can purchase wine to take home.
