This is a museum built on a hill which overlooks Sagami Bay in Atami, Shizuoka Prefecture. From the main lobby with one sweep of the eye, you can see Hatsushima and Izu Oshima islands floating in the sea, and the large 180-degree panorama soothes the souls of the people who see it. It holds approximately 3,500 fine works of art with a focus on Japanese art including three National Treasures and 65 Important Cultural Properties. The museum reopened in February, 2017 after undergoing renovations. It is located five minutes by car from JR Atami Station.

I never would have expected such an impactful museum in a city as small as Atami. It is visually impacting from when you first roll up to it. You can enjoy incredible views of Atami before even...

Located in the sightseeing spot of Shizuoka Prefecture’s Atami City, this was constructed as a villa in 1919 and is a famous residence that was declared one of Atami’s Top Three Villas. It was used as a ryokan (Japanese inn) during the Showa period (mid-1920s to late 1980s), and as a famous lodge in Atami it was loved by various literary masters and celebrities including Naoya Shiga, Junichiro Tanizaki, and Osamu Dazai. It is a refined residence with a Japanese-style main building, a western-style structure that combines the beauty of the East and the West, and a chisenkaiyu-shiki garden (a style of garden that features a path around a pond), and it was opened to the public as an Atami City Designated Tangible Cultural Property.

In general, Atami gets a lot of bad press for nothing to see (apart from the Sex Museum). Kiunkaku, however, is definitely worth checking out. The original two buildings date from the Taisho Period...

A castle built in the Momoyama period style located at the Nishikigaura mountaintop in Atami City, Shizuoka Prefecture. The castle was in fact built in 1959; no castle was ever historically located here. The castle tower viewing platform offers a stunning view 160 meters above sea level, and on clear days visitors can see all the way to the Izu Peninsula and Oshima. The castle’s grounds are filled with things to see and do, including a jacuzzi foot bath to soothe aching feet while gazing at beautiful scenery, a free game center, an area where visitors can try various Edo period activities, a museum dedicated to castles and samurai culture, and a tea house offering sweets and spectacular views. The adjoining Atami Trick Art Museum is also popular. Fee required to enter castle grounds.

We went for lunch as there is nowhere else around the castle but it has a nice panoramic view of the sea. The meal itself is simple, based on Japanese noodles (soba/ udon) , options with tempura. The...

Located in a perfect location overlooking the sea is this stained glass museum in Kawana, Ito City, Shizuoka Prefecture. With a church and chapel contained within, there is precious stained glass from the 19th century given by the UK to be found throughout the building. The museum is a glorious space in which the soul is soothed by the rays of sunshine pouring through the stained glass windows, the soft light of the lamps and by the scent of the incense. Unexpected moments can be enjoyed while listening to the sounds of the music box and pipe organ. On site is an Italian restaurant run by chef Yukio Ishizaki and also a wedding venue.

On display are sculptures and paintings by Seiko Sawada, a sculptor who received designation as an Honorary Citizen of Atami and the Order of Culture Merit. Having studied under Zuiun Yamamoto, the top pupil of Koun Takamura, Mr. Sawada continued creating works in a wide range of artistic fields, including wood sculptures, paintings, pottery, and printings, until he passed at the age of 93. Teeming with powerful vivacity, his works are well regarded as communicating at lot of romance when seen. Displayed in several ancient Egyptian exhibits and highly praised for its size and material value, the ""Egyptian coffin: top lid"" is said the finest item is Mr. Sawada's collection."

An art museum just a five-minute walk from the Shaboten Park Bus Stop, a 20-minute ride on the Shaboten Park bus from Izu-Kogen Station on the Izu-Kyuko Line. Nearly some 250 wax dolls of a variety of historical figures and movie stars are on display. All of the details no matter how dainty have been reproduced from facial features and shape down to wrinkles and fingerprints. Leonardo Davinci's The Last Supper was painstakingly recreated over a 13-year period and is a must-see sight.

Shogetsuin Temple is a temple of the Soto school of Zen Buddhism and is situated on a hill about five minutes’ walk from Ito Station. The temple is also known as Hana-dera (flower temple) or Sakura-dera (cherry blossom temple) because of the many cherry trees planted there, including the rare higan (early-flowering) cherry tree. The temple is famous for its spectacular views overlooking Ito City and the sea. It is also the family temple and birthplace of Mokutaro Kinoshita, a literary man from Ito. In the beautifully maintained gardens are a slab with a haiku engraved onto it and a writing-brush burial mound, and in the lake next to the main temple is Bentendo Hall devoted to the goddess Saraswati. It is one of the stops on the tour of the Seven Deities of Good Fortune.

The museum was opened in 1996 as a museum dedicated to mechanical antique automaton clocks. These automaton clocks were once made all around the world but due to issues with demand and durability production dwindled and they are now quite rare. A number of unique automaton clocks are on display including a wood carved Owl Clock which make an owl sound to mark the time.

Shizuoka Areas

around-area-map

With the giant Pacific Ocean to the south and the great Mount Fuji to the north, Shizuoka prefecture is blessed with some of the best views the country has to offer. The white sand beaches of the Izu Peninsula are a rare find on mainland Japan, neighbored by beautiful cliffs, tumbling hills, and natural hot springs. As Japan’s largest producer of green tea, the age-old tradition of tea drinking is ubiquitous in Shizuoka, from the miles of tea fields to the old tea houses hosting traditional tea ceremonies.
