Egawatei is the local governor’s residence where the Egawa family, descendants of Yamato Genji for over 900 years and 42 generations, resided. It has been designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. It is located in the site of the Nirayama government office, designated a national Historical Site of Izunokuni City, Shizuoka Prefecture. Following the Hogen Rebellion in 1156, Uno Chikanobu, the sixth generation of the Uno family, settled in the land of Izunirayama and so began the history of the Egawa Residence. The Uno family renamed themselves as the Egawa family and served as local governor for eleven generations during the Edo period. The main building is a single story building with a half-hipped roof. There are lots of things to see such as the quake-absorbing geometric lattice-work of the roof, and the ‘live pillars’ where trees have been used in the construction of the building.

Shizuoka Areas

around-area-map

With the giant Pacific Ocean to the south and the great Mount Fuji to the north, Shizuoka prefecture is blessed with some of the best views the country has to offer. The white sand beaches of the Izu Peninsula are a rare find on mainland Japan, neighbored by beautiful cliffs, tumbling hills, and natural hot springs. As Japan’s largest producer of green tea, the age-old tradition of tea drinking is ubiquitous in Shizuoka, from the miles of tea fields to the old tea houses hosting traditional tea ceremonies.
