    Shizuoka Atami-shi Izusan 604-10
Hashiriyu is a hot springs source located in Izu-yama, Atami City. One of only a handful of hot springs in Japan where the water gushes out of the rocks horizontally rather than vertically, the modern name “Hashiriyu” (“Running Spring”) derives from the appearance of the water, which appears to be rushing towards the sea. Hashiriyu has a long history, having been discovered around 1,300 years ago; prior to the Meiji Restoration, it was a sacred hot spring associated with the Izusan-jinja Shrine. It is ranked as one of Japan’s “Three Great Ancient Springs.” Currently, around 7,000 tons of water flows out of the springs every day.

From the shore, visitors can enjoy watching the setting sun turn unusual rock formations like Tago-jima Island and Meganeccho (also known as Godzilla Rock) into dark silhouettes. One of the sources of the so called Seven Hot Springs of Atami in Atami City, Shizuoka Prefecture, the steam which escapes through the rocks at this hot spring is so hot you can boil an egg. Just place an egg into a basket and position it over one of the steam vents, put on the wooden lid and wait for the egg to be boiled. Cooking times vary depending on the weather but soft boiled eggs take about six to eight minutes to cook and hard boiled eggs take about 10 minutes. You can bring in your own eggs or buy them from the store opposite. The steam is extremely hot so be careful when boiling your eggs!
