    This French confectionery specialist in Ginza Town, Atami City, Shizuoka Prefecture is an old shop established in 1947. The first-generation chef opened the shop after long research and self study and it has since become a much loved landmark in the area. In the storefront showcase are pillow sponge shortcake, mille-feuille, roll cake, and other pleasingly traditional cakes all in a row. They continue to pay close attention to the fundamental ingredients like the dough, sponginess and cream and make cakes to traditional French recipes.

The shop is famous for its new-style cake, cheese dorayaki, which is made without using any sweet bean paste yet retains that traditional dorayaki (red bean pancake) style. The sour taste of the cream cheese filling goes together perfectly with the sweetness of the cake making it a popular treat for well-known entertainers and customers from far and wide. They sell many other kinds of cakes such as the Madeleine cake topped with local specialty Kawazu cherry blossom petals.

    Chaan Fuyo is a tea house situated next to the grave of Minamoto no Noriyori on top of a small hill in Shuzenji, Izu City, Shizuoka Prefecture. Time passes by quietly and serenely inside this old Japanese house. Here you can sip carefully selected matcha green tea and enjoy sweets while gazing out over the ever changing gardens. Their signature dish is the rice-flour dumplings with azuki beans and matcha ice-cream. The texture of the handmade dumplings is to die for. Their green tea complete with a selection of freshly made sweets which differ each month is also particularly good. When the weather is nice and sunny you can enjoy tea outside on the garden benches.

    修善寺の山腹を散歩していてたまたま見つけた、広く古風で品の良い民家。よく見てみると、茶寮でした。和室からは、ガラス戸越しによく手入れされた庭と修善寺の山が望め、品の良い掛け軸もあり、なんとも上品な気分に浸れます。ぜんざいをいただきましたが、おいしかったです。

It’s a rare kind of roll cake made with fresh cream containing candied chestnuts in the middle of a rolled sponge cake wrapped in a fragrant choux pastry. It’s such a popular cake that it is more often than not sold out in the morning. If you want to buy it then it’s better to place your order at least one week in advance.

    A Japanese-style sweets cafe in Nakamise Shopping Street near Atami Station, you’ll recognize this place by its brown bricks. The Japanese-modern style and relaxing music lends the interior a calm, mature ambience. It is known for its “kogane mochi” (gold rice cakes), which is served at traditional Japanese inns. Soft rice is combined with sweet bean paste to create a sticky sweet. There’s also shredded kuzu cake with black syrup, red bean soup, and other goods that offer a refreshing sweetness. They also sell souvenirs you can take home.

    電車のまで時間があったのでコーヒーでも飲もうと歩いていたら、上品な和菓子屋さんを見つけました。席につくなり、石鹸の香りのする熱々のおしぼりを出してくれて感動。コーヒーと冷やしこがねもちをオーダー。美味しくいただきました。ほうじ茶も良い香りで美味しく、お金を取らない物に、これだけ丁寧なのは素晴らしいと思いました。

It is said to be the original home of one of Matsuzaki’s most famous sweets, Cherry Leaf Mochi. Consisting of mochi and sweet bean paste wrapped up in a leaf from a local cherry tree, this confection combines a salty flavor with a delicate sweetness as it melts in one’s mouth. Chohachi no Tatsu, a Japanese-style confection made by coating two layers of mochi in fine Wasanbon sugar, is also highly regarded. It also sells a wide variety of other sweets, including roll cakes, Monaka (bean jam between two crisp mochi wafers) and Kintsuba (gelatin covered with a rice batter).

    ケーキを何個かかって帰りました。チョコレートケーキは濃厚なんだけど、飽きのこない味付けで食べやすかったです。

All sorts of Japanese sweets such as Yomogimanju and Joyomanju are sold in the store.

The madeleine cakes which Yukio Mishima, who spent his holidays in Shimoda, called “Japan’s best madeleine” has a moist texture without using milk or butter, and the flavor has remained unchanged since the 1950s. Also the lemon cake using natural lemon is a famous product that has continued for more than 50 years and is sold as a set with madeleine cakes.

    古き昭和の時代からあるこの店は、今もなおその趣は変わらず”洋菓子”店としてあります。今は、甘さも見た目も増してその味に慣れてしまってますが、控えめで上品な味は他の店にはない、この店の味を保っています。マドレーヌやレモンケーキは当時高級菓子で特別な日やご褒美の品でした。懐かしさと健闘している姿が店の構えからも伝わってきました。

    ドイツのパンは酸っぱくてまずいイメージだったが、ここにはドイツだけでなくクロワッサンやバゲットもある。きっと試行錯誤なんだろう。フランスパンのアンパンはなかなか噛みきれない食感が気に入って白あんもおいしい。連れの友人は偶然にもドイツパンを探していたとのことで喜んでくれた。

    Casha is a café and gallery located near the Numazu Imperial Villa Memorial Park in the Shimokanuki district of Numazu City. The coffee, which is made from beans purchased from Kyoto and ground and brewed individually for each cup, and the hand-made chiffon cake, are very popular. Casha offers a range of different types of chiffon cake, including “Angel” white chiffon cake made with meringue, as well as seasonal specials made with black soybeans, cherries, black tea, etc. Both whole cakes and bagged cake portions are available for take-out.
