This Japanese candle shop is about five minutes on foot from the JR Takayama Main Line Hida Furukawa Station on Ichinomachi Street, which is sometimes used as a set for TV dramas. There are very few Japanese candle shops. Founded over 240 years ago, it’s said this is the only one that makes all their products by hand. The candles are perfect vegetable based, so they don’t give off much soot and maintain a flame well. They’re also used for the traditional event known as Santera Mairi, the Three Temple Pilgrimage. The candles make popular souvenirs, and you can see them being made at the store.

Ten minutes on foot from JR Gero Station, this store is run by a pharmaceutical manufacturer headquartered in Gero City, Gifu Prefecture. Their Okuda Gero Abura ointment is a Gero Onsen specialty, sold to ease lower back pain, joint pain, and stiff shoulders. It was handed down through the generations to Okuda Mataemon, an orthopedic doctor in Gero Onsen. They offer black, white, and green Gero Abura, as well as a liquid version. They have a variety of other products too, like bathwater additives, and Japanese style scented papers called Nagomi Sheets. You use different ones according to your symptoms.

"This craft museum is where you can experience the traditional craft of ""Yukizarashi Sanchu Japanese paper"" in Kawai-cho, Hida City. You can enjoy experiences including papermaking and vegetable dyeing. Sanchu Japanese paper is made by exposing and bleaching ""kozo,"" the raw ingredient for Japanese paper, with snow for a characteristically light and natural color. Called ""Kozo no Yukizarashi,"" it is a traditional technique that has been handed down for close to 800 years in the area. Although it has been handed down as a farmer's winter work, the number of producers has decreased dramatically in recent years. In addition, it is possible to observe the work process by the craftsmen and the actual making of Japanese paper."

A 15-minute drive from Gero Station on the JR Takayama Main Line. This long standing brewery makes sake and shochu with choice rice, water, and people. The brewery's Tenryo sake is lovingly crafted by the chief brewer using Hidahomare, a local specialty rice ideal for sake making; and underground spring water from the Hida Mountains. Instilled with the spirt of brewery founder Hinoya Sahei, this sake is the embodiment of Hida. The brewery's novel products like the sparkling sweet sake Sumasuma are also popular. Visitors can tour the brewery year round for free, and also enjoy sake tasting (advance reservation required).

We were there before their renovation. The Manager speaks English and gave us a box full of tokens to try their free flow sake. Check the availability for their next brewery tour after renovation.

They sell specialty Sasamaki Yokan (sweet bean jelly wrapped in a bamboo leaf), fluffy castella (sponge cake) and hand-made rice cakes that are sold only in the winter. A famous confection in Kamioka, Sasamaki Yokan is made by hardening sweet bean jelly liquid and pouring it into kumazasa (kuma bamboo grass) that is folded like a butterfly. This sweet bean jelly has an aroma and leaf vein from a bamboo leaf clearly, and its light taste is great for gifts.
