This museum in Gifu City, Gifu Prefecture is a six-minute walk from the Ukaiya bus station located a short bus ride from Gifu Station. The museum was opened in 2012 in order to propagate, spread, and protect the tradition of ukai (cormorant fishing) in the Nagara River, which has continued for over 1,300 years. The museum’s first floor features an area where you can learn hands-on about ukai as well as exhibits including examples of traditional ukai attire. On the second floor, visitors can enjoy learning about ukai from exhibits about usho (cormorant fisherman) and their yago (trade names), exhibits on historical figures with deep connections to ukai, a “guidance theater,” and more. The museum also rents out conference rooms and other facilities.

This is a great insight into the ukai. Miserable weather outside prevented me from better enjoyment of the live birds, in their full breeding plumage. There should be some interaction with the u...

This museum is part of the Japan Taisho Village Theme Park which reproduces the ambiance of a Taisho period town. It's five minutes on foot from Akechi Railway's Akechi Station. They hold planned exhibits several times a year. They also have a display about the Emperor Taisho, a symbol of the Taisho period, and a display on daily life that uses period realia to reproduce a typical household. The first floor has newspapers of the period and retro posters, and the adjacent Cafe Tenkyu feels just like a coffee shop from the era.

This museum is about a five-minute walk after getting off at the Hirayu Bus Terminal. The building is a remodeled private house with a half-hipped roof, with a sunken fireplace room and hemp clothing to show old rural life of the first floor, and exhibits of farm tools that introduce the history of Hida on the second floor. And another thing that is popular is Hirayu no Yu that adjoins the Hirayu Folk Museum. The rotenburo (open-air bath) has spring water directly from the source and is located in a clump of trees, giving it a great atmosphere. Able to see the changing scenes of the seasons from fresh green to autumn leaves and winter snow, you can enjoy the beauty of nature and Hirayu’s hot springs to your heart’s content.

This residence on a cobblestone slope in the post town of Magome-juku is known as the Shimizuya and belonged to the Hara family. Mori-san in Shimazaki Toson's “Arashi was based on Hara Ippei who once lived there. In addition to Toson's handwritten letters and hanging scrolls, they have numerous items on display that tell about life in the once flourishing post town of Magome. The building you see today was constructed after Magome was destroyed by fire in 1895. It's an important example of a large traditional townhouse built in the Meiji period and is a nationally Registered Tangible Cultural Property.

This museum is located in the middle of Nakatsugawa-juku, the 45th post town on the Nakasendo Highway from Edo (present-day Tokyo). It exhibits a lot of items such as historical documents about Nakatsugawa, ancient documents, and valuable materials regarding people throughout the end of the Edo period (1603-1868). Nakatsugawa has long played an important role as a point of contact with Kisoji and between Edo (present-day Tokyo) and Kyoto. Documents on the bridesmaid processions of Kazunomiya discovered from the old house in Nakatsugawa-juku, and the comings and goings of the Tengu Party have been collected and preserved. In addition, there are documents that tell the secret story of the important event called the Satcho Alliance during the end of the Edo period, and it is possible to observe them all. There are also tours available from Nakatsugawa-juku to Ochiai-juku and Magome-juku.

    今どきな感じのビジュアル系資料館ではなく、昔ながらの資料を並べただけの資料館です。ゆえに、歴史好き、文学好きの方でないとなかなかその面白さはわからなかなと思います。
