This porcelain shop is a little to the east of Kajibashi Bridge. Founded in 1841 and run by Houkokusha, to this day they continue to make hand painted Shibukusa-yaki chinaware. This is the only place Houkokusha’s products are available. Since everything is meticulously hand painted, their pieces aren’t cheap, but they’re high quality. People often give them as gifts, and Japanese people sometimes choose them as a reward for participating in the “countryside tax system. Their hallmark product is a tea bowl painted with chrysanthemums inside and out. If you hold it up to the light you can see how beautifully the patterns are rendered.

This is the studio of Koizumi Zoho, the head of a family that has served the local shrine since the Edo Period. It's five minutes by car from the either Tajimi Interchange on Chuo Expressway or the north exit of JR Tajimi Station. The quality of work they aim for is neither like inexpensive mass-produced items, nor expensive works of art, but somewhere right in the middle. They put particular energy into their rice bowls. Through the trial and error approach of their artisans, they've produced every possible shape and pattern of rice bowl imaginable. The red paint made over a thousand-day period from a pigment known as “benigara looks gorgeous and becomes more subdued as time passes.
