    This park rich with nature is located in Kaizu City, Gifu Prefecture. There are flower beds to enjoy seasonal flowers from spring to autumn that add color to the grassy plaza. It has a 65-meter tall observation tower and the “Hall of Water and Horticulture” that introduces the climate and history of the area centered on the Kiso Sansen, or three rivers of Kiso (Kiso River, Nagara River and Ibi River) and their basin. In addition, there is an outdoor center complete with audio equipment that is used for various events such as live performances. The wheelchair rentals and many slopes make it accessible to visitors of all kinds. In the winter, the illumination displays light up the entire park with beautiful colors.

    This dam straddles the border between Shizurase-cho, Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture and Kushihara, Ena City, Gifu Prefecture. The parabolic concrete arch dam is positioned in the upper reaches of the Yahagi River. Visitors can tour the control room, the tunnels below the dam body, and other areas (reservation required). The dam also holds dam discharge viewing events several times per year. It is also possible to enjoy the rich natural scenery of the area surrounding the dam and Lake Okuyahagi, its dam lake, including cherry blossoms and fall foliage.

    This rest facility is located in Minami-kasuga-cho, Seki City. It is made in the image of the “Sekisho” from which it is said the city’s name originated from. The restaurant offers local cuisine and also has morning and lunch menus. In the local product shop, you can find a large number of local specialties and famous items, and fresh vegetables harvested locally are sold at the morning market. It is recommended that families try the origami or handicraft workshops in the “Takumi no Waza Taiken Kobo” (craftsmanship experiential workshop). Reservations are required and can be made using the Seki City public relations magazine “Koho Seki.”

    「濃州関所茶屋」は、関市の名前の由来となったといわれる「関所」をイメージした休憩施設です。高さ4メートルの冠木門をくぐると、朝市販売所、物産ショップがあります。日本刀アイスも販売しています。

  • Gandate Canyon

    A 40-minute drive from Gero Station on the JR Takayama Main Line. This picturesque canyon follows a mountain stream for 17 kilometers. Its lava (andesite) columnar joint walls and boulders were formed some 54 thousand years ago by the magma which flowed from an eruption of Mt. Ontake. The surrounding area is maintained as Gandate Park and facilities include observatories, a shop, and parking area. Mitsudaki Waterfall, located inside the park, can be reached via a 600-meter-long walkway. The canyon has been designated a Natural Monument by the prefecture and is a renowned destination for viewing fall foliage which has been selected for inclusion in a list of the 33 Selected Hida and Mino colored leaves. Visitors can enjoy a different atmosphere in spring when fresh verdure fills the area.

    "About a 30-minute drive from Gero Onsen, this area on the Kadowasa River that originates in Gero City's Kadowasa is home to a kind of firefly called ""genji-botaru."" It's a good habitat for them as the river has lots of black snails that the fireflies feed on, slow flowing water, and little pesticide pollution throughout the river basin. In 1969 the area was designated a Natural Monument by Gifu Prefecture. The best spot to see them is the roughly four-kilometer stretch between the Hiuchi and Wasa districts. You can see the fireflies in all their faint flashing glory from mid-June through July."

    This hand-on learning facility in the Sasayuri Clean Park offers an array of glass crafting programs that include glass blowing, bead making, sand blasting, and glass fusing. They last one to two hours, anyone can participate, and there's something for everyone from four-year old children to adults. With lodging for up to 40 people, a gymnasium, and a day-use bathhouse all on-site, the facility is available for training camps and social gatherings, too.

    A firefly viewing area on the upper reaches of the Daianji River in eastern Kakamigahara City. They hold a firefly festival in June when members of a local firefly organization are on hand to answer questions about the insects. The area on the river around the biotope with its facility signage is a good spot to view them. People say they're most active around 20:30. Using public transportation is recommended as there isn't a parking lot nearby.

    "Located about an hour from Hida Takayama, one can find winterly features at Akigami Onsen at the foot of Mt. Ontake. This old winterland dates back to 1971. It is an ice forest that is prepared from around September every year with a water supply hose of about 600 meters in a site of about four hectares. You can enjoy a world of brilliant color that is blue during the day and lit up at night. When the cold is particularly severe, we host a ""bubble ball experience"", where you can witness bubble balls freezing in the air and not breaking even when they fall to the ground."

    This parking lot is located at the highest point of the Hakusan Shirakawa-go White Road driving course in Hakusan National Park that connects Ishikawa Prefecture and Gifu Prefecture. It is situated in front of the tunnel entrance that crosses the prefectural border near the prefectural border in Gifu Prefecture. It is the earliest place to see the changing autumn leaves on Hakusan Shirakawa-go White Road, and it is possible to see the Northern Alps from an altitude of 1,450 meters on clear days. It is also the starting point to Mt. Sanpoiwadake, derived from the rocks facing the three directions towards Hida, Etchu and Kaga. You can climb the trail in about 50 minutes to the summit, and go down in around 40 minutes.

    A scenic old water canal located right next to the Former Gujo-Hachiman City Hall Memorial Building a five minute drive from the Gujo-Hachiman Interchange. Enclosed by the stone walls of old Japanese homes, trees, and shrubs, the canal has an old fashioned atmosphere harkening back to a different age. Visitors can see colorful red and white koi carp swimming in the canal and, in summer, possibly see locals cooling a watermelon in its waters. Sometimes locals also keep baskets of sweetfish used for bait in the canal, as well, and being able to taste the air of one of Japan’s bygone eras is one of the area’s biggest highlights. There are three clothes washing areas along the canal which also serve as social gathering spaces for locals.

    This pass runs along the clear waters of the Itadori River that flows almost through the center of the Itadori district, and is known by this name because of the approximately 70,000 hydrangeas that are planted along the nearly 24 kilometer highway. Even selected as one of Japan’s top 100 roads, various events are held when the hydrangea are in bloom. The best time to see them is from mid-June to early July, and it bustles with many tourists from inside and outside the prefecture who visit every year at that time.

    新穂高ロープウェイの始発で西穂高口まで上がると、山頂付近は次第に雲に覆われ、西穂高口展望台からは西穂高や笠ヶ岳など周辺のやや低い山々が何とか見える程度でした。長靴を履いて上って行ったので、西穂高口の駅を出て、積雪の頂の森を散策しました。前年の秋に作られたという槍の回廊という新しい展望台では、残念ながら槍ヶ岳を見ることはできませんでしたが、ロープの網の上を歩いて少しスリルを感じられました。

    飛騨に飛行場がるのを知らず道路にある看板を見て立ち寄りました。滑走路もしっかりありますが肝心の飛行機は一機もいません。何に使われているかわかりませんが話のネタにはなるかな？
