A souvenir-oriented fresh food stand located next to the Fujii Folk Museum. The stand’s signature Hida beef croquettes can be eaten fresh made and piping hot, and this is the best way to savor the unique flavor of the Hida beef used. The stand’s Hida beef kushiyaki grilled meat skewers are also very popular, and customers can choose between three varieties—sirloin, marbled, and lean. The marbled is the most popular. Meanwhile, the sirloin variety is a bit more exclusive, as it is limited to just 20 skewers a day. The stand also sell’s sets of 10 skewers slathered in sauce for taking home. Other items on offer include soft serve ice cream and alcoholic beverages, and much of what the shop makes is perfect for enjoying on the go while exploring the area. The stand is open year-round.

This rice cracker shop is located in the Sanmachi Preservation Districts for Groups of Traditional Buildings. With a dedication to fine ingredients, they select domestic rice every year, and have special rice cracker soy sauce made for them by a long-standing soy sauce maker. They toast the rice crackers over binchotan charcoal, and you can eat them as is fresh from the shop. They even have a huge face-sized rice cracker. Since it comes with a piece of nori seaweed to hold it with, your hands stay clean, and it’s perfect for eating while walking around. They also sell a variety of other items like nurekari mochi and hoba senbei, so you can pick your favorite depending on the thickness and flavor. They’re also recommended for souvenirs.

About a two-minute walk from the Shirakawa-go Bus Terminal, this restaurant built with a gassho (large thatched roof) style is located in the world heritage site called Shirakawa-go. You can enjoy simple and warm regional cuisine made with local ingredients. One recommended dish is the “oyaji wazen (Japanese hot pot with bear meat).” It has a wild animal taste that they have offered for more than 30 years, but they finish it with miso to remove the smell so that tourists not used to bear meat can eat it more easily. One of their other popular menu items is the “hoba miso wazen (Hida beef)” with a traditional flavor they have guarded since their opening. It also has a parking lot that can be used by large buses.

Went in for lunch. There is an array of set lunches. However, we were short of time, so we only ordered ramen. Very quickly, we were served the ramen. Awesome ramen.

This cafe inside a chic warehouse with white walls is located a short walk in the direction of Sanmachi-dori Street from JR Takayama Station in Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture. Their finest coffee made with a stone mill uses only award-winning charcoal-roasted coffee beans from South America and is very popular. Their chappuccino, matcha tea finished with cappuccino, is a wonderful sight for the eyes with its beautiful green color dazzling in the white cup. The juice made with Hida peaches and melons is also rich and filled with sweetness. For dessert, they have various Japanese and western-style selections including black currant ice cream and kudzu starch noodles.

Located amidst the Takayama City Sanmachi Preservation Districts for Groups of Traditional Buildings, old-style streetscape in Kami-sannomachi, Hida-takayama City, Chanome is a modern Japanese café. It is based on the concept of serving items made from the finest ingredients at a reasonable price. An especially popular item is the soft-serve ice cream made exclusively with 100% high-grade matcha tea, ground in the stone mortar near the entrance to the shop. The bite-sized Taiyaki (waffle-like confections filled with bean jam) come in five flavors and are perfect for either eating inside the café or while walking around town. In the summer, the café sells Maruppo Mikan, frozen mikan (Mandarin oranges) on a chopstick skewer.

This long-established butcher shop established in 1927 is about a nine-minute walk from JR Takayama Station. Built in 1936, the building is a nationally registered tangible cultural property. In Tengu, the Hida beef restaurant adjacent to the shop, you can enjoy authentic menu items such as “grilled Hida beef ” for lunch, grilled steak and shabu-shabu.

This restaurant specializes in Hida beef curry, so right away I had high expectations. The owner/chef was very nice and could speak some English well. She had an english menu, which was really just...

This Japanese and Western sweet shop is in Koden, Gero City, Gifu Prefecture. Their Japanese sweet called “namadora with a filling of fresh cream and tsubuan bean paste sandwiched between pancakes made from local red eggs and milk is a local favorite. They also sell limited time items filled with the flavors of the season. Their “Wa-MORI-mori Parfait with fresh cream and fruit on kudzu mochi starch cake and sponge cake is popular too. It’s easy to hold on to and great for walking about the hot spring district.

A confectionery shop about a 15-minute walk from Hida-Furukawa Station. They use milk from the local Bokuseisha (an industry producing and selling milk and dairy products), fresh Momiji eggs (a brand egg whose eggshell color is brown) within two days after laying, and as much fruit as possible from the Hida region. The most popular item is the Gateau Swiss Roll, which is made of puff pastry sheet and sponge baked separately and rolled with fresh cream. There are many other items such as Genuine Swiss Roll featuring fluffy sponge, petit gateaux using seasonal fruits, baked sweets, and gifts.

    おせんべい、ロールケーキやチョコケーキとかの洋菓子が売っているお店で、とてもおいしく召し上がることが出来ました。特にロールケーキが美味しかったです。

Masuen Bunsuke serves simple flavored Shirakawago cuisine. Housed in a building with gassho-zukuri (steep sloping roof) architecture, it's like something out of a folk tale. While gazing out at the seasonal scenery, guests enjoy cuisine with a focus on fresh water fish. They harvest the char, red spotted trout, and rainbow trout they raise in spring water from their 14 fish ponds and prepare it while fresh. Along with home-grown rice, homemade miso, and the best wild vegetables, you'll love the down-home flavors of Shirakawago.

It is a beautiful and very nice place, we came here for our lunch and its very happy with it, they have traditional foods and the quality are perfect. The owner are warmly welcome and very friendly...

Keichan is a regional dish from the Hida and Gero areas of Gifu Prefecture, and Suginoko is a great place to try it. The shop is five minutes south of JR Gero Station by car via Prefectural Route 440 along the Hida River, near the Masuda Highway overpass. Their superb keichan consists of chicken thigh meat cooked with cabbage and their secret sauce in a Genghis Kan grill pan. It goes great with rice and Japanese shochu, and we recommend finishing off the meal by mixing in fried yakisoba noodles. There are also a variety of other local dishes on their menu such as Gero’s konyaku gelatin sashimi and Hida beef grilled with miso.

This tea shop is located about a 15-minute walk from JR Takayama Station in the city center of Takayama City. You can spend a relaxing time gazing out on the lush courtyard of the Meiji-era (1868-1912) machiya (traditional wooden townhouse). In the space where the plaster-walled storehouse was rebuilt, you can taste a menu with various items such as parfaits, crepes and Japanese sweets including warabi-mochi (bracken-starch cakes covered in sweet soybean powder) and kuzukiri (arrowroot noodles). The soybean flour soft-serve ice cream using Japanese soybeans and soy milk is very nutritious and has a gentle taste. You can enjoy the sweetness from special ingredients, such as limited season rice flour crepes and apple pies using Hida apples.

Fuku parfait is awesome with perfect combination of flavor and texture. Warabimochi Is delicious and also soy soft cream sweetness is perfectly mixed. Anyway, coffee Is just decent.

A European style restaurant located in the Suimeikan hot spring hotel. For breakfast, the restaurant serves sweet fresh fruit juices and tomato juice as well as original dishes made with Hida ingredients. For lunch, you can enjoy a casual course meal or the restaurant’s “Premium Burger” set meal made with Hida beef and limited to just 20 customers a day. For dinner, the establishment offers seasonal meals, a variety of course meals made with Hida beer, and a premium dinner course which includes a flambé dessert, perfect for special occasions and anniversaries. Here diners can enjoy dishes incorporating an abundance of Hida ingredients enwrapped in a quiet and soothing atmosphere.

This cafe opened in 1969 and is located on Shinmachi-dori Street in the center of Gujo Hachiman, Gifu Prefecture. The antique furnishings and walls with tile and plaster create a unique atmosphere. They specially-select raw beans, and provide multiple kinds of coffee roasted in-house with Gujo’s famous water. Some of their popular items include the “moca pair” with coffee jelly and ice cream topped with lots of chocolate sauce and heavy cream, the filling strawberry parfait available only during certain seasons, and “matcha anmitsu” (syrup-covered bean paste and fruit) with melty matcha green tea powder. In addition, their hayashi rice (hashed beef rice) and curry with Hida beef that is prepared for a week are highly recommended.

In a small town like Gujo Hachiman, finding morning coffee outside of your hotel or local ryokan (inn) can be a difficult challenge. There are no readily accessible 7-11s or Family Marts in town...

This restaurant that specializes in teppan griddle cuisine is about six minutes from the Tokai-Hokuriku Expressway's Gujo Hachiman Interchange, in the center of Okumino's castle town Gujo Hachiman. They're dedicated to meticulously preparing ingredients from Okumino, raised by the passion of the producers on the pure upper reaches of the Nagaragawa River, surrounded by the deep green of the mountains. You can watch them preparing your food right before your eyes from the counter seating in the 100-year-old building that was once a private home. In addition to their hobamiso-yaki made with thick cuts of Hida beef, their Gujo-yaki with lots of faintly sweet local onion is also popular.

This French restaurant and steak house is ten minutes on foot from Takayama Station on the Takayama Main Line. Guests enjoy leisurely meals in the antique interior of their old kominka (old Japanese house). They use only the highest A5 grade Hida Beef fillet and sirloin. The finely marbled meat is soft enough to melt in your mouth. Apart from steak, you can dine on fare like tail stew, sliced and seared Hida Beef tataki, fish, Japanese tiger prawns, abalone, and more. According to your budget, you can get your meat cut to order as well.

This soba buckwheat noodle shop to the west of Yanagibashi Bridge was founded in 1933. They still make their noodles the old-fashioned way with Hida raised buckwheat, stone-ground and formed by hand every day. Because of that the amount they can make is limited, and although they’re open until 20:00, they close once they’re sold out. Their wild vegetable soba is a local favorite, and their soba-gaki also comes recommended. They have plenty of both hot and chilled options, as well as toppings like soft boiled eggs and grated daikon radish with ume plum. Their Soba Kaiseki banquet cuisine served in the evening requires a reservation.

The food is very good! The staff is nice. They get an extra point for speaking English!! The atmosphere is also cool, very authentic.

A restaurant located in front of Gero City Hall which offers a variety of dishes made with Hida beef. In addition to standard teishoku set meals, the restaurant also serves steaks, sukiyaki, misoyaki, Hida beef teishoku set meals, and much more. You can also enjoy the restaurant’s own take on the tomato-don, a local Gero dish, which consists of Hida beef served over rice with tomatoes and egg on top; as well as a pork tomato rice bowl which combines tomatoes and rice with clean-tasting Hida Nattoku pork. In addition, the restaurant serves keichan chicken stir fry, another local Gero dish. One more nice thing about this establishment; it’s open until 23:00.

This handmade soba and udon noodle restaurant is located across from the Juroku Bank and near the front of JR Takayama Station. Their springy and flavorful homemade soba noodles are made exclusively with buckwheat grown in Hida that has been coarsely ground with a bespoke stone mortar. We recommend their juwari soba (soba noodles made without any wheat flour), which allows you to enjoy the inherent flavor of buckwheat. Their juwari sansai zaru soba, which is their juwari soba noodles served on a bamboo sieve along with stewed edible wild plants and seasonal tempura, is an extravagant treat. Most of the wild plants featured in the dish were collected by the restaurant’s owner.

A conspicuous Hamburger specialty restaurant located in Takayama City in an area where much atmospheric, old architecture remains. The restaurant’s long and narrow “space for eating Hamburgers” stretches away from the entrance, and the establishment’s eye-catching décor will make you forget you’re in Japan’s Hida-Takayama region. The restaurant’s signature menu selection is its Hida beef burger—made with ingredients from Hida and limited to just a few customers each day, this original recipe Hamburger is also popular with visiting international tourists. The restaurant’s large menu also includes the unshakably popular bacon cheeseburger as well as the avocado burger, particularly popular with women. The restaurant also carries beers from around the world and a wide selection of other drinks.

There is a restaurant where you can eat a Hida beef rice bowl set and hoba-yaki (grilled beef on magnolia leaf) and learn how to make matcha green tea, and a souvenir shop where you can purchase specialties such as Myogata or Meiho ham, or hoba miso (miso grilled with onion on magnolia leaves). In addition, with the cooperation of Iwasaki Company, maker of food samples, you can experience making samples of things like tempura and lettuce.
