Nagano Suwa-gun Shimosuwamachi

This historic structure was once a honjin inn for government officials located in the post station town of Shimosuwa-shuku, where two of the Five Routes, the Nakasendo Road and the Koshu Kaido, intersected. Reception is located past the front gate and beyond the extremely lengthy front entrance garden. The inn was used to accommodate many important persons, including Princess Kazu, Emperor Meiji, and various daimyo lords during the Sankin-kotai period in which lords were obligated to alternate living in the capital every other year. The current 28th head of the family privately maintains and manages the facility, preserving the primary parts of the structure as well as period furnishings and making these viewable to the public. Its permanent exhibition includes a short sword left behind by radical Sekihotai group member Sagara Sozo prior to his execution. The facility's landscape-style rock garden, purported to have been the best along the Nakasendo Road, is exceptionally beautiful on rainy days and is well-worth a look.

甲州街道の終点、下諏訪宿にある旧本陣。皇女和宮降嫁の際に、この本陣で使われた道具類。歴史の舞台そのままで、けっこう生々しく展示されていました。明治以降、岩波家は兄弟が遺産相続後に新しい事業に進出。失敗しながらも、本陣の建物が何とか残されたという経緯です。

Nagano Pref. Chinoshi Miyagawa 4529

A miso factory and shop located in Chino City, Nagano Prefecture. The establishment makes its miso in an old storehouse once used for silk production, and visitors can tour this factory area. In the shop area, you can buy a wide variety of miso as well as garlic pickled in miso, miso ramen, and more, and the establishment is popular with people of all ages.

ドライブ中に、買い物で寄りました。 4代百年の丸井味噌、どぶろく(濁り酒)、漬物、甘酒、味噌スィーツなどが、店に並んでいました。「どぶろく、にんにく味噌、味噌」を買いました。「玄米のどぶろく」も以前はあったようですが、今回は無しでした。どんな味なのかいつかは試してみたいです。

This municipal art museum is situated on Prefectural Route 484 in Hara Village, Suwa County, Nagano Prefecture. The museum's standing exhibition consists of works by Hara Village-born sculptor Takashi Shimizu, as well as calligraphy by the similarly Hara Village-born calligrapher Kakusen Tsugane, and Jomon period pottery and stone implements excavated from archeological sites in the village. The museum also holds a variety of special exhibitions throughout the year. Walk the walking path around the museum and you can enjoy an outdoor sculpture exhibit and also come in contact with the natural beauty found at the foot of the Yatsugatake Mountains.

A rustic hot spring with simple alkaline spring water. The highly hypotonic hot spring is said to help alleviate nerve pain and muscle soreness. It locates on National Route 152, the Daimon Highway. Rich in minerals, it has a reputation for being both mentally and physically relaxing. The name derives from mythical creatures called kappa, long ago thought to inhabit one of the rivers nearby. The cozy village hot spring is open from 7:00 to 21:30 (entry until 21:00). It's nice to be able to bathe from early in the morning until late in the evening.

Nagano Pref. Chinoshi Kitayama Tateshina 4035

Located in Chino City, Nagano Prefecture, this temple was founded to pray for traffic safety in 1970. There are about 300 Yoshino cherry trees on the grounds; because of the 1,200-meter elevation, they bloom somewhat late, between the end of April and early May. The temple holds its Shokoji Sakura Festival when the trees are in bloom, lighting them up in the evening.

今年の桜は早くてGW前には満開になってしまった。GWに観桜を楽しみにしていたけど、ちょっと残念。まぁ自然のものだから仕方ないけど。

"A day-use hot spring bathhouse with a casual atmosphere located in Pool Daira situated along the Venus Line. This popular destination has long been a favorite of tourists visiting the area to escape the summer heat, villa vacationers, and mountain climbers. The bathhouse' baths are constantly replenished ""kakenagashi"" style with the colorless waters of an acidic, sulfur-containing sodium chloride sulfate spring. These waters are on the hot side at 43° C and since ancient times have been said to treat cuts and burns. Customers can purchase shampoo, body soap, towels, and other items from vending machines in the bathhouse."

なかなかいいお湯でした。観光客はほとんどおらず、地元の方ばかりで、派手さはありませんがのんびりできる落ち着いた温泉です。

The station has a farm-fresh shop selling vegetables picked that morning as well as other agricultural products, processed foods, and crafts. Because of the high altitude of this ski resort the quality of the snow is good and the slopes are always kept in prime condition. The weather is almost always good and from the top of the mountain and slopes views can be had of the Shinshu mountains. Slopes are designed so that both beginners and advanced skiers can enjoy themselves to the max. When spring comes the Natsuyama Observatory Lift starts running. You can enjoy all the wild plants and trekking on the highland plateau. The sunrise unkai (sea of clouds) lift from where you can see a sea of cloud from the summit at 1925 meters is also very popular.

"A literature museum located in Shimosuwa Town, Nagano Prefecture. The museum preserves and displays materials relating to Kuniko Imai, an Araragi school woman poet who was active from the Meiji through the Showa periods; as well as ""Asuka,"" a female tanka poetry magazine she launched. The museum operates out of a remodeled Shimosuwa-shuku teahouse, Matsuya where Imai spent her childhood and later years and which was also used as the editing room for ""Asuka."" Surrounded by the restored structure, looking much as it did when originally used, visitors can come in contact with the turbulent times in which the poet lived through her manuscripts, diary, and poetry anthologies."

Nagano prefecture Suwa City Kirigamine championship shoulder

This is a small mountain hut offering lodging on Mt. Kuruma in Kirigamine, Suwa City, Nagano Prefecture, and it provides a cafe service as well between the end of April to the end of November. The rooms all require prior booking. The cafe has a wooden deck terrace from which one can look out over the Mt. Kuruma wetlands while enjoying the fresh mountain air along with a light meal or sweets. Popular menu items include the limited cheesecake, special siphon coffee, and warm borscht. They also sell souvenirs and original goods.

Kirigamine of Suwa-shi Nagano Prefecture

Selected as one of the top 100 famous mountains in Japan, Kirigamine Highlands, at approximately 1,600 meters above sea level, extends 10 kilometers east to west and 15 kilometers north to south. In early summer the azaleas and daylilies are at their best, and from summer through to autumn you’ll find fireweed and silver grass in bloom. 訪れた時は試飲は中止していたので、ワンカップサイズを試しに買ってみました。本金(ほんきん)の名前の由来は、左右対称のごとく、裏表のない商売で本当の金(=一番)を目指すと言う思いを込め、命名されたとの事です。

This long-established eel restaurant is near the Tenryu River in Okaya City, Nagano Prefecture. They serve jiyaki kabayaki style eel from Kansai, charcoal grilled without steaming. Their namabushi-don rice bowl with a sauce mixed with wasabi and leek is popular. The shop can seat 120 guests, and has a large parking lot, too. Lots of people travel from afar to eat here, and there can be a line to get in, especially on Saturdays and Sundays.
