This is a long-established Japanese confectionery shop known for a famous Tateshina confection, Kuzobee-mochi (rice cake). The origin of the rice cake is that in 1839 the ancestor, Yazaki Soji, who established Tateshina Hot Springs, handed out the rice cakes to the guests who came to take a bath. The rice cake comes in the five flavors of wormwood, perilla, chestnut, walnut and cherry in spring. The rice cakes remain a perennial favorite as a souvenir with their moist and rustic taste and elegant packaging.

This restaurant, which is proud of its 100% buckwheat soba noodles made from buckwheat from the Mt. Yatsugatake foothills, makes a rich dipping sauce using seven types of mixed stock which goes very well with the noodles. Since opening in 1988, the restaurant has been working hard to improve the noodles and develop its menu while maintaining unchanging flavour. It is definitely worth trying the magnolia leaf and wild vegetable soba noodles in the summer and the tempura bowl set in the winter. The nearest station is JR Chino Station.

Nagano prefecture is an exciting mix of mountains, hot spring monkeys, and preserved Edo history. At the heart of the Japanese Alps, Nagano is one of the country’s most popular destinations, whether in winter for its snow sports and the much-loved Jigokudani Monkey Park or in the warmer months for discovering the undulating hills on foot. For fantastic Edo architecture, head to the Kiso Valley for a 60-kilometer stretch of quaint wooden buildings that marked the Nakasendo route 200 years ago.
