The best time to come for a hot spring. It’s not the best our there but this is where the local goes. Facilities are better than I thought. The place is very quiet and chill

Ishiyu is a public bath in Shinshu’s oldest hot spring resort, Bessho Onsen, with spring water flowing freely right from the source. It also appears in Shotaro Ikenami's novel, Sanada Taiheiki. The water is slightly alkaline and it is said to be effective in combating fatigue and good for beautiful skin. There’s a drinking fountain nearby so you can enjoy not only a good soak in the bath but also a drink of the hot spring water. It’s also possible to buy essential items such as shampoo and bath towels making it an easy place to stop by for a bath.

This public bathhouse in Ueda City, Nagano Prefecture, is one of the sources for the old Bessho Hot Spring featured in The Pillow Book (by Sei Shonagon). It was also known as Aoi no Yu because Kiso no Yoshinaka used to take a bath with Aoi no Gozen, the concubine he loved, in the characteristic building with a fine three-layered tile roof. It is also said that the spring is connected with Hojo Yoshimasa. The spring waters contain plain sulfur. As well as the relaxing indoor baths there is also a small open-air bath too.

A low cost bath facility located in Ueda City, Nagano Prefecture; the facility also operates one of the outdoor baths in Bessho Onsen, a historic hot spring area which was mentioned in Pillow Book by Sei Shonagon. The bathhouse’s name is an allusion to the Ennin, who is given the honorary title “Daishi” (great teacher) in Japanese; the head priest of the Enryaku-ji Temple. Ennin bathed here in 825 and greatly enjoyed the experience. The bathhouse is an old and stately building, and its waters are clear and colorless. Frequented not just by tourists but also local regulars, Daishiyu has a casual, inviting atmosphere.

A 40-minute drive from the Ueda-Sugadaira Interchange and the Omi Interchange. A day trip hot spring bathhouse located in an area filled with hot spring inns. The bathhouse gets its name from the mountain behind facility, which resembles Kyoto's Mt. Ogura. A hot spring area highly regarded by those in the know, the history of Kutsukake Onsen dates back to when Prince Shigeno's eye was healed after bathing in the hot spring waters here. A list of bathhouses published in 1810 records there were 292 bathhouses in the area at that time. The bathhouse' waters are on the lukewarm side, making it possible to bath in them for an extended period of time to fully warm the body to the very core. Another merit is the fact that the bathhouse is open from 7:00 a.m. from June to August.

Nagano Areas

around-area-map

Nagano prefecture is an exciting mix of mountains, hot spring monkeys, and preserved Edo history. At the heart of the Japanese Alps, Nagano is one of the country’s most popular destinations, whether in winter for its snow sports and the much-loved Jigokudani Monkey Park or in the warmer months for discovering the undulating hills on foot. For fantastic Edo architecture, head to the Kiso Valley for a 60-kilometer stretch of quaint wooden buildings that marked the Nakasendo route 200 years ago.
