    "Matsumoto Castle is said to feature Japan's oldest surviving five-storied six-floor pagoda. It is one of the few castles designated as a National Treasure, and maintains the image of the past. The black and white contrast of the castle rising amid the Alps in the background is beautiful, and the castle has become a symbol of Matsumoto City. In addition to the castle facilities of the Sengoku period, such as the stone drops meant to rebuff invaders, or samurai windows or the gun slits, there are exhibits such as the ""Matsumoto Castle Gunhouse"" centered around matchlock guns, and artifacts unearthed during the ninomaru palace excavation performed from 1979-1984. In the precinct, you'd do well to see the black gate with eave roof tiles marked with the family crests of historical castle lords, or the taiko gate which was restored in 1999."

    These castle ruins are located in Nagano City. The castle was constructed as the base for the Takeda side during the Battles of Kawanakajima between Takeda Shingen and Uesugi Kenshin. It is a natural fortress that uses the Chikuma River as a moat. In addition, Sanada became the ruler in the Edo period (1603-1868), and it developed into the castle town of Sanada Jumangoku. Destroyed in the Meiji period (1868-1912), only the stone walls of the buildings remained, but now the gate and earthworks are maintained.

    "A park and castle site situated along Prefectural Route 50 in Takashima, Suwa City. Takashima Castle was built 400 years ago by Hineno Takayoshi, a vassal of the Toyotomi clan. An impregnable castle surrounded by Lake Suwa, the sight of the stronghold floating on the lake's water has resulted in it gaining the nickname, ""the Floating Castle of Suwa."" The castle tower was restored in 1970 and is used as a museum which presents materials on the history of Suwa Domain and Takashima Castle. The surrounding park is a renowned cherry blossom viewing destination in spring."

    These castle ruins are located in Higashitakato, Takato-machi, Ina City. Built on a hill surrounded by flatland, the castle was the seat of power of the Takato Clan. It would later end up in the hands of a string of success owners including Takeda, Hoshina, Torii, and Naito clans before being abandoned in 1872. It is best known for being the site of the Battle of Takato Castle between Takeda and Oda forces in 1582. Today, the castle's moat, earthen main gate, and other archeological remnants still remain. The entire area has been developed into the Takato Castle Ruins Park. Famous for its cherry blossoms, the approximately 1,500 Takato kohigan cherries which bloom in the park in the spring have been designated as a Prefectural Natural Monument.

    Ueda Castle was built by Sanada Yukimura’s father, Sanada Masayuki. By repelling the Tokugawa Army twice before, the castle became known as the impregnable castle. Today it is maintained as the Ueda Castle Park and it is famous as a cherry blossom viewing spot during the spring every year at the Ueda Castle Thousand Cherry Blossom Festival.

    The ruins of Tatsuoka Castle are a 20-minute drive from the Saku-Minami Interchange, next to Goryokaku Park and the Goryokaku Deai Museum. The ruins were designated a National Historic Site in 1934. It is also known as Kikyo Castle. It is one of only three five-sided castles built in Japan, the others being in Hakodate and Tatsuoka. It was built in the latter days of the Edo period by Matsudaira Norikata, the daimyo of Tanoguchi. It was demolished in 1872 after the feudal system was abolished. Even now, the moat and part of the kitchen remain. Those who want to tour the kitchen area should make reservations ahead of time.

    "This ruined castle, one of only two Western-style star forts in Japan, was also known as ""Bellflower Castle"" due to the resemblance of its shape to a Chinese bellflower. Today, it is a nationally-designated Historic Site. The fortress was demolished in 1872 after Tatsuoka Domain was abolished. The castle's moat, earthen walls, and kitchen building still stand, and the grounds are used as-is as Taguchi Elementary School. With an advance reservation, visitors can view the interior."

    The site of a ruined castle which once belonged to the Shioda clan, retainers of Murakami Yoshikiyo. Deeply connected to the Battles of Kawanakajima fought between Takeda Shingen and Uesugi Kenshin, the castle was used as a residence by Murakami Yoshikiyo after he was driven out of Katsurao Castle in an attack by Takeda. During the first Battle of Kawanakajima, the castle was also used as a headquarters by the Takeda forces. Today, all that remains of the castle are its earthen and stone base and its well. Stone monuments and informational signs mark the location of the castle, and a path with hydrangea growing along it has been built nearby. In the Shioda no Yakata museum on the outskirts of the site, visitors can view articles excavated from the ruins.

    A local culture and history museum located on the site of Wada Castle, which once looked out over the area known as Wada in the village of Minamishinano. The museum building recreates what Wada Castle looked like, recalling the splendor that was enjoyed by the Toyama clan who ruled the area during the Warring States period. The museum displays over 200 masks used in the local Shimotsuki Festival. A large screen complex also presents traditional performing arts. Outside the museum there is a statue depicting one of the lords of the Toyama clan facing the mighty Tokugawa Ieyasu.

From the watchtowers, you can get a sweeping view of such picturesque scenery as the Chikuma River and the Kamiyada Hot Spring area.
