    Nagano Komoro-shi Tei 314
A three-minute walk from Komoro Station. This soba noodle restaurant is located close to the inner citadel in the center of Komoro Castle Park. The standard cold zaru soba noodles, which reflect the innate flavors of the ingredients used to make them, are particularly recommended. The large sized soba noodles are enough to feed two people. Weather hot or cold, the restaurants noodles come with edible wild plants, mushrooms, deep fried tofu, and grated yam; the restaurant's Daimyo Soba comes topped with all of these plus an egg. Other toppings include tempura and eggs. The summertime only perilla and plum soba noodles have Japanese ginger in them, giving them a refreshing flavor. During the cherry bossom viewing season, customers can enjoy a banquet with an advance reservation. Note that the restaurant closes when its supply of noodles for the day runs out.

Nagano Prefecture Kitasaku-gun Karuizawa-machi Old Karuizawa 668 Karuizawa shopping array
A café located in “Karuizawa Shopping Alley” in Karuizawa Town, Kitasaku County, Nagano Prefecture operated by a natural ice vendor which was founded over 100 years ago. The café is famous for its sweet, shaved ice, made with rare natural ice created by freezing spring water from Mt. Asama outdoors in the cold air of winter. Shaved thin and fine, the ice is light, resembling fresh-fallen snow. Piled heaping high, you might think one bowl is too much to eat, but it’s so delicious you’ll find your spoon hitting bottom before you know it.

This eatery is a seven-minute drive from the JR Chuo West Line's Nagiso Station. Located in Tsumago-juku, it has a Showa Retro atmosphere. Their gohei mochi rice-cake sticks are the pride of the shop. Smothered in their secret sauce made with walnuts and sesame seeds, eating them is like a taste of old Japan. They also sell them vacuum packed to enjoy their aromatic freshness on the go. Sabo Ebiya is a Japanese-style café located in Tsumago-Juku, which prospered in the old days as the 42nd station on the ancient Nakasendo Road between Edo (present-day Tokyo) and Kyoto. After passing through a lattice gate, customers find themselves in a tastefully appointed tatami room where they can relax and enjoy the treats that are offered. Kuri Zenzai, made with carefully selected chestnuts and adzuki beans, is just one of the treats, all of which are made in-house, and their subtle sweetness is a perfect accompaniment to matcha tea. Kuri An Shiruko, which looks like white miso at first glance, is a popular menu item made with sweet bean soup and chestnuts, and Ebiya’s flagship product, Kuri Kinton (chestnut dumplings) is a highly recommended souvenir.

Nagano Areas

Nagano prefecture is an exciting mix of mountains, hot spring monkeys, and preserved Edo history. At the heart of the Japanese Alps, Nagano is one of the country’s most popular destinations, whether in winter for its snow sports and the much-loved Jigokudani Monkey Park or in the warmer months for discovering the undulating hills on foot. For fantastic Edo architecture, head to the Kiso Valley for a 60-kilometer stretch of quaint wooden buildings that marked the Nakasendo route 200 years ago.
