    "A museum with the theme of ""Time, Nature, and Faith"" in the Suwa area, known for the septennial Onbashira Festival and Lake Suwa's Omiwatari phenomenon. It showcases the background and distinguishing features of Suwa's special beilef through video and displays of cultural properties. The special exhibition room displays about 2,000 specimens of butterflies from around the globe. There is also an illustrated encyclopedia published by a British zoologist on birdwing butterflies. There are few like it in the world. The red installation in front of the museum represents the shrine's torii gate and the pillars of the Onbashira Festival. They face the sacred mountain nearby."
  • Azumino Municipal Toyoshina Folk Museum

    A folk museum which introduces the history of Toyoshina, Azumino City. A painting depicting Azumino as seen from the south is displayed in the entranceway. Next to that, there are exhibits containing trace fossils of shrimp and crabs, which indicate this area was once ocean. In the museum's standing exhibition space, everything from daily life in the area to seasonal events is portrayed in great detail, presenting the area's way of life. There's also an activity corner with a water play area. In addition, the museum regularly holds special exhibitions and events, and the facility plays a role in passing on the area's culture.

    A 20-minute drive from the Suwa Interchange on the Chuo Expressway. This large museum focuses on the wilderness sprawling at the foot of Yatsugatake Mountains and the people who live there, including exhibits on local history, industry, and folk customs. Nature exhibits include a natural history of the area and plant specimens and stuffed examples of animals living in here. Historical exhibits include presentations of life in the area from the Paleolithic to the modern day, everyday tools, and farming implements, as well as information on how kanten algae gelatin, a local traditional industry is made; and misinformation about the Nagano region. The museum also holds shows utilizing a mobile planetarium.

    "A small museum adjoining the Gin no Saji inn which introduces the wonders of honey and beekeeping. The museum building is constructed in a unique local style used to build storehouses known as ""tategurumi;"" the front plaster facade incorporates a kote-e relief of a bee. An exhibition room and shop selling primarily domestic honey and honey-related knickknacks are located on the first floor; the museum's tasting course, in which participants get to compare the taste and aroma of over 20 varieties of honey, is particularly popular."
  • Former Nakagomi School

    "A five-minute walk from Namezu Station and an eight-minute drive from the Saku-minami interchange. This former school building, located right next to Seichi Park, was constructed in 1875. It is the oldest extant Western-style school building in the country and has been designated an Important Cultural Property and National Historic Site as an extremely important example of historic architecture. Due to its many glass windows and the stained glass windows decorating the first and second floors, an extreme rarity at the time, it was nicknamed the ""Glass School."" A taiko drum was used in the octagonal steeple jutting out from the center of the roof to announce the time and was thus known as the taiko tower. A lovely wisteria trellis stands in front of the school."

    A 10-minute drive from the Matsumoto Interchange and 20 minutes from JR Matsumoto Station. This art and history museum is located in the front of the Azusagawa Library. In part a place for local residents to rest and relax, there's a coffee room in the lobby and an outdoor event space; visitors can also take in cherry blossoms on the grounds in spring. Exhibition room number 1 can be rented out and is used for exhibitions and concerts. Exhibition room number 2 displays works by local artists such as Toranoshin Kawagoe and Kesao Horasawa, and also introduces the history of the Azusagawa area. Exhibits include pottery discovered during archeological excavations and farming implements once used by local residents.
  • Kirigamine Glider Fureai-kan

    "A 30-minute drive from the Suwa Interchange on the Chuo Expressway. This facility with a glider hangar, was built in here 1997 in part because of the area's history as the birthplace of gliding in Japan and its culture of gliding. The facility has a standing exhibition visitors are free to view in which are display the Hato, Taka, and Tobi, unique gliders designed in the so-called ""Kirigamine style;"" a Tondokoro Mk II, a model descended from Japan's first domestically produced glider; and several other gliders. The facility also shows three glider-related movies. Admission is free, but the facility is closed in winter."
  • Chikuma City Furusato Manga Museum

    This manga museum preserves and displays some 4,000 works of art and other materials from Hidezo Kondo, a political satirist born in Chikuma City who helped popularize politics among the masses via manga. In addition to the artists political satires, his caricatures of celebrities are also popular. In the museum's library, people of all ages can enjoy manga books and anime videos.

    A museum situated on the east bank of Hijiri Lake. The museum has exhibits on the history of Omi Village, the Zenkoji Kaido road, and the Shinano 33 Kannon Temple Pilgrimage, enabling visitors to learn about the history of the area and the way its people have lived. A separate building is dedicated to aviation and displays unusual and rare aviation-related items, including an F-104 fighter jet.

    A museum adjoining the Miyagawa Shikkiten lacquerware shop in Yabuhara, Kiso Village, Kiso County, Nagano Prefecture. The museum contains exhibits on the Miyagawa family, who for generations provided medical treatment from the Edo period to the early Showa period. Visitors can view old medical implements, rare paintings and calligraphic works, and swords.
  • Chikuni no Sho Museum

    This is a historical archive in Kita-azumi County in Nagano Prefecture that communicates the history of the Chikuni Kaido road. Also called the Salt Road, it was used to transport goods from the Sea of Japan to Matsumoto in Nagano Prefecture and this archive was built on the remains of a guard house built at an important point along the way. An original private house has been relocated from a Chikuni settlement and rebuilt and visitors can see the way everyday life was at that time. There is also a Chikuni Bansho guard house and a Shiokura salt store. It is around one and a half hours from Azumino Interchange on the Nagano Expressway.
  • Literary Museum of Karuizawa

    Karuizawa has become the setting of many literary works. The Literary Museum of Karuizawa, opened in 1985, is where to come to experience this rich literary world. Visitors can see inside a relocated mountain hut loved by Tatsuo Hori on the grounds. In addition, visitors can also see the stately interior of the relocated villa “Jogetsuan” from the end of the Meiji period, where Arishima Takeo died in a love suicide. It is about ten minutes by car from the Shinano Railway Nakakaruizawa Station.

    Located 10 minutes away by car from JR Nagiso Station, the museum is composed of three buildings: the designated national important cultural property Wakihonjin Okuya (Hayashi family residence), the Tsumago Post Town Honjin restored to its late Edo period (1603-1868) layout, and a history museum made of reinforced concrete and wood. The Tsumago Post Town Honjin is a facility designated by the shogunate as a place of accommodation for the Daimyo, and has been faithfully reproduced with its late Edo period (1603-1868) layout. In addition, the history museum exhibits materials on topics such as Nagiso’s history and the historic preservation movement using easy-to-understand models and videos.
  • Togakushi Museum of Natural History

    "This museum is on Prefectural Route 404 in Togakushi Tochihara, Nagano City. Among the items on display are fossils of shellfish excavated from the Togakushi Mountain Range, letting visitors learn about the natural history of the Nagano Basin. Housed in a former elementary school building, they also hold various workshops that get visitors up close with the items, including fossil cleaning and ""museum experience"" workshops."

    1875年に完成し、国内の学校建築のうち現存する最古級の擬洋風建築物で、重要文化財に指定されています。 太鼓楼とかギヤマン楼とも呼ばれているとの事です。 駐車場は少し分かりにくくて、建物周辺をぐるっと回ってしまいました。 建物の敷地のすぐ左側の道が駐車場に入れるようになってます。隣接の公園の駐車場でもあるようです。
