At this market complex, you can enjoy seeing, buying, and eating the charms of Wakasa. The complex offers a popular 60-minute boat cruise which enables riders to take in the local dynamic scenery formed by the stormy waters of the Sea of Japan. The Sotomo Cruising boat ride operates from March to November and is offered four times a day to general customers and also runs up to four times a day for private groups (when reservations have been made). The first floor of the complex is a souvenir store carrying famous products from Wakasa. The second floor is a restaurant serving an abundance of seasonal ocean delicacies.

This shop, which specializes in Wakasa lacquered chopsticks, manufactures and sells Wakasa lacquered chopsticks carefully crafted by artisans as well as hexagonal chopsticks that fit children’s hands. Each beautiful pair is carefully studded with egg or sea shells and painted with dozens of layers of coloured lacquer, but remains easy to use. Personalised chopsticks such as for couples are also available.

A shop located on Kaigan-dori Street in Obamatamamae, Obama City that specializes in Sasazuke, or bamboo leaf pickling. They produce carefully made additive free Kodai-no-Sasazuke from domestic ingredients. Fresh sea bream caught that morning is seasoned with ingredients including salt, vinegar, and mirin and then packed with kelp in a cedar barrel. They also sell a variety of other processed goods made with local Wakasa seafood including Wakasa-Guji, high quality tilefish pickled in miso, and mackerel pickled in rice-bran paste, a traditional meal along the Saba Kaido Road.

Fukui Areas

around-area-map

Northeast of Kyoto, the ancient Tojinbo Cliffs separate Fukui prefecture from the Sea of Japan in a stretch of land well worth exploring. Water sports and seaside delicacies are available in abundance as the spectacular rugged coastline flattens down into beaches to the west of the prefecture, while inland, Fukui is home to Zen Buddhist temples and historic ruins.
