At this market complex, you can enjoy seeing, buying, and eating the charms of Wakasa. The complex offers a popular 60-minute boat cruise which enables riders to take in the local dynamic scenery formed by the stormy waters of the Sea of Japan. The Sotomo Cruising boat ride operates from March to November and is offered four times a day to general customers and also runs up to four times a day for private groups (when reservations have been made). The first floor of the complex is a souvenir store carrying famous products from Wakasa. The second floor is a restaurant serving an abundance of seasonal ocean delicacies.

Apart from gifts, the restaurant at the ground floor(self service) offers great food at a very good price. The sushi and sashimi are very fresh. Miso soup and tea are complimentary. There is a small...

Located in Oi Town, flanked by mountains and the ocean, Roadside Station Natasho consists of a single-story wooden log house, and is a roadside station reminiscent of “Nata-no-sho” —a lot name that existed from late ancient period to the middle ages. In the Bussankan, they sell specialty products including Jinenjyo (wild yams)—king of wild vegetables—and “Natasho pickles” made with low sodium and using local ingredients. The jinenjyo are only available from mid November to mid December.

This facility is part of the Uminpia Oi leisure complex where there is all sorts of fun to be had. The view from the Roadside Station offers a panoramic view of Wakasa Bay. It is popular for the sales area where you can buy seafood freshly caught offshore from Wakasa, seasonal vegetables, rice, fruit and flowers directly from producers, as well as local specialities and an 80-seat food court with a view of the sea. The gelateria, where gelato is made with fruit and vegetables from Oi-cho and milk from Fukui Prefecture, comes highly recommended.

Obama, which was the center of Miketsukuni, is a historic place where Wakasa seafood and salt were presented to the ancient Imperial Court and this museum was created as a place where people could come into contact with this history and culture and interact with other people. The museum is divided into sections to introduce the diet of this region with replicas of dishes such as Zoni (rice cake soup)—the Symbol of Japanese New Year Food, Traditional Events and Foods which introduce a year in the folklore treasure trove, Wakasa Obama, based on foods, and Miketsukuni Wakasa and Saba Kaido (the ancient mackerel route) which is Japan Heritage. A number of courses are also offered.

Being a syncretized Shinto and Buddhist temple, this is an extremely rare temple where worshippers clap their hands. It is famous for the Shinto ritual of omizu-okuri (sending water) to the Nara’s Todaiji Temple Nigatsu-do Hall. It houses a late Kamakura period Deva Gate (a Nationally Important Cultural Property) and Nanboku-cho period wooden god and sitting goddess statues as well as the main hall (also a National Important Cultural Property) which was built in the Muromachi period and is so magnificent that it is said to be the best in Wakasa.

As the entranceway to Obama City, the Roadside Station Wakasa-Obama is Obama City’s first roadside station and it provides a lot of local information. It has a wide variety of goods, from specialty goods from food city Obama, to local seasonal vegetables to even crafts, and the food menu included mackerel named for Saba Kaido. There are many choices, like “mackerel dumplings,” “mackerel curry,” “mackerel & potatoes,” but “soy-aroma mackerel sandwich” is quite popular, winning a prize at the “Do-1 Grand Prix.”

    サバサンドは、独特のソースでおいしい。 ボリュームたっぷり。 冷やし鯖うどんも、梅干しが入っていておいしい。
