    Fukui Pref. Sakaishi Mikunichouantou
    Tojinbo, the beauty spot is a stretch of steep cliffs with a rock face which has been eroded by the waves. The rock cliffs which have a height of about 25 meters continue along the Mikuni coastline for about one kilometer. “Columnar jointing of pyroxene andesite” of this scale can only be seen in three places around the world, and in 1935, it was designated as a Natural Monument and a Place of Scenic Beauty of Japan. You can enjoy a powerful landscape from the pleasure boats which go around the strangely shaped rocks such as the “Beehive rock” and the “Lion rock”.

    Perfect for beach bathing, Mikuni Sunset Beach has good quality water, shallow and wide beaches, and is famous for its beautiful sunset over the ocean. The period from July 25 to August 10th is packed with tons of events, including the Mikuni Fireworks Festival, popular with families. You can rent swimming rings, beach umbrellas, and even boats at the beach stand.

    Mikata-goko (Five Lakes of Mikata) in Mikatakaminaka County is a collective name for five lakes: Lake Mikata, Lake Suigetsu, Lake Suga, Lake Kugushi, and Lake Hiruga. Due to differences in depth and salinity, each lake is a slightly different color on its surface, and they form magical scenery. Rainbow Line Summit Park is known as a viewing point for overlooking all the five lakes.

    With roughly 17,000 red and black pine trees, Kehi no Matsubara (a pine covered area, near the seashore) is a famous location and one of Japan’s Top 3 Pine Forests, along with Miho no Matsubara and Niji no Matsubara. It is about 400,000 squre meters and 1.5 kilometers in length, and provide strong contrasts with the white sand and blue-green pines. It is also open as a bathing area in summer, and since there is a good pathway, so you can take a stroll and enjoy the scenery. Approximately 13 minutes by car via Tsuruga Interchange on the Hokuriku Expressway.

    A learning facility in Itoyo-cho, Ono City. It's located next to the Hongan Shozu spring water pond which is one of the few habitats for the three-spined stickleback fish and as such as been designated as a Natural Monument of Japan. Inside the building you can learn all about the ecology of the stickleback with an area where you can watch them and exhibits teaching you about their living environment.

    イトヨとは何か知らなかったのですが、綺麗な水に生息している淡水魚でした。魚にはトゲがあると聞きました。入るときは何か掃除をしている方がいたのですが中には職員の方はいました。

    Oshima Island, the largest islet on the Echigo Coast, has long been called “the island of the gods” by the people of the region. It can be accessed from the mainland via the vermillion-lacquered Oshima Bridge. The islet is part of Echizen-Kaga Kaigan Quasi-National Park. This beautiful place, a mere 27 meters tall and two kilometers in circumference, is full of legends and mystery.

    This dam, where you can enjoy the scenery of the seasons surrounded by nature, is the third largest rockfill dam in Japan. Lake Kuzuryu, which is also the dam lake with a submerged area of 890 hectares, is famous for its beautiful autumn leaves. Directly beneath the dam there lies the Nagano Power Station, Fukui’s largest hydroelectric plant.

    The Uriwari Waterfall is named for the fact that the water that springs from the rocks in the mountains here is cold enough to split a gourd, even in summer. The multiple ground layers act as a natural filter, creating mineral water with high purity filtered through many months. It is water beloved by many and one of the top springs in Japan’s 100 Best Springs. Flowers bloom in all four seasons around the arbor, with the beautiful hydrangeas of June being particularly intoxicating. About 15 minutes on foot from JR Kaminaka Station.

    This cape, selected as one of Japan’s top 100 places to watch the sunset, is located in the northernmost part of Echizen Town. The scenic area features many reefs created by marine abrasion. Some of its most famous sites include the kochomon (a natural rock tunnel) and torikusoiwa (a massive 100-meter tall cliff). The observation deck has a great view of Echizen Suisen Land and the Sea of Japan. Sunsets at the cape are an especially stunning.

    Located in Shiroyama Park in Takahama Castle Ruins, Meikyodo is one of the beautiful eight natural caves called “Yana no Kisho,” carved out over many years by the harsh waves of the Sea of Japan. Meikyodo features a gorgeous horizon view deep into the cave. This horizon is lit with fishing lanterns at night, creating a magnificent view.

    One of the Echizen Coast’s most notable sights, this large tunnel-like rock formation was created by eons of erosion by the wind and the waves. The rock formation, famous for being one of the best places to experience the natural beauty of the Echizen Coast, makes it appear as if the cliff is jutting out into the ocean. A promenade has been built nearby, allowing visitors to get a close look at the formation.

    This pond is located a 90-minute drive from Fukui Interchange on the Hokuriku Expressway to the Koike Park parking lot and then about a 50-minute walk up a hiking trail. The pond sits on Habagadaira, a plateau surrounded by a virgin forest of Siebold's beech and Mongolian oak at the foot of the 1,690-meter-tall Mt. Gankyohji upstream of the Uchinami River. Although it is relatively small at only about 400 meters around, it is known for having the most beautiful autumn foliage in the prefecture. While there is a creek that pours into the pond, there are no streams that leave the pond. Despite this, the water levels remain constant. The sight of Mt. Sannomine, one of the peaks of the Hakusan Mountains, and the surrounding autumn foliage reflected in the mirror-like surface of the pond is quite beautiful.

    This cliff, designated Place of Scenic Beauty by the prefecture, is located in Otomi, Takahama Town, Oi County, Fukui Prefecture. The towering cliff is 260 meters tall and its magnificent form was slowly carved out via erosion caused by the stormy Sea of Japan. A walking path leads to Oshimawashisaki Lighthouse standing on the tip of a peninsula; visitors can also take a tour and view the majestic cliff from the sea onboard a fishing vessel (reservation required).

The cliff's name literally means ""Bird Poop Rock,"" a name it gained due to the excrement of the sea birds which live on its end."

    Ryusogataki Waterfall is located in Ikeda Town, Imadate County, Fukui Prefecture and has a height of about 60 meters. It has been chosen as one of Japan’s Top 100 Waterfalls. The sight of water crashing down the rock face is nothing short of spectacular. The fresh verdure in spring, and the beautifully colored leaves and natural scenery of the ravine in autumn are beautiful sights to behold. And in the summer, people flock to this popular tourist spot in search of a cool respite from the scorching summer heat. The sheer height and power of the waterfall is enough to overwhelm anyone as they descend the stairs down to the bottom of the falls. Legend has it that a dragon, who lived in the water, used to climb the falls to fly high into the sky, and also long ago a priest named Ryuso performed ascetic practices here by carving images of deities and of the Buddha. Entry is not allowed to the waterfall during the winter because of snow.

    Ichijo Falls is a waterfall located in the upper reaches of Ichijodani River in Fukui City, Fukui Prefecture. This is where the famous sword master Sasaki Kojiro mastered his secret sword technique, known as Tsubame Gaeshi. It’s a popular spot for tourists who can witness the large mass of water crashing down the 12 meter high rock face. There is a statue of Sasaki Kojiro at the entrance to the waterfall and there are also some walking paths in the area.

Northeast of Kyoto, the ancient Tojinbo Cliffs separate Fukui prefecture from the Sea of Japan in a stretch of land well worth exploring. Water sports and seaside delicacies are available in abundance as the spectacular rugged coastline flattens down into beaches to the west of the prefecture, while inland, Fukui is home to Zen Buddhist temples and historic ruins.
