  • Yamanaka Urushi-za (Yamanaka Lacquerware Traditional Industry Hall)
    Travel / Tourism
Ishikawa Kaga-shi Yamanaka Onsen Tsukatani Machi I268-2
The most distinctive characteristic of Yamanaka lacquerware, a traditional Yamanaka Onsen craft, is the use of a technique called “kiji” which involves carving out the shape of a piece from raw wood. This area, known as Sugatani-machi, is the home of many world-class artisans who carry on this technique utilizing a lathe to carve away the wood. Located five minutes from the heart of the Yamanaka Onsen hot spring district, this shop displays and sells a diverse array of Yamanaka lacquerware. Dating back to the distant Azuchi-Momoyama period, Yamanaka lacquerware is notable with the smoothness of the lacquer, which adheres extremely closely to the wood; and its fragrant, woody smell. Encountering Yamanaka lacquerware in person stimulates all five senses in a way photographs cannot possibly convey. Here customers can purchase Yamanaka lacquerware at the kind of reasonable prices you’ll only find by going direct to the source; visitors can also watch live demonstrations of artisans using a lathe to carve out a piece for later lacquering.
