Kanazawa Higashi-rou Shima was built in 1820 in the Kanazawa Higashi Chaya District, and the building to this day hasn’t been altered and remains as it was during the Edo period. It is highly valuable as cultural heritage and has been designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The guest rooms on the second floor are structured for the purpose of merrymaking: if the guests sit with their backs to the alcove, the front becomes an anteroom, and it is designed that one can enjoy dancing and artistic accompaniment if the fusuma (Japanese sliding screens) are opened. You can have traditional Kanazawa sweets together with green tea in the tearoom, “Kanson-an”.

A small and intriguing museum located in a beautiful historical building. I recommend paying the additional fee for the tea and sweets.

"Kaikanro in Higashi Chaya-gai is located in the center of the beautiful Degoshi and stone pavement, and is popular for banquets at night and as a cafe during the day. The retro Japanese-style space has a Wajima-nuri vermilion-lacquered staircase, and is so famous that it was featured in the 2007 movie ""Maiko Haaaan! The cafe is so famous that it was featured in the 2007 movie ""Maiko Haaaan!"

A walk round the jewellery and tourist good shops in the old and faintly notorious Geisha district famous for the educated skills of old-fashioned high-class entertaining. Fascinating.

"A five minute walk from the ""Hashiba-cho"" bus station on the Hokuriku Railroad Bus and JR Bus lines from Kanazawa Station. This museum is dedicated to gold leafing, a traditional industry in Kanazawa. The museum was started by Takaki Yasue, a gold leaf artisan who collected gold leaf artwork and tools and built a hall to display them in Kitayasue. Due to the aging of this facility, the museum was moved from the hall to its current location in Higashiyama in 2010. The museum building was modeled after a traditional Japanese townhouse and is accented with gold leaf. The domed ceiling in the museum's hall, decorated with no. 3 pure yellow gold, in particular is a must-see. The museum contains exhibits and video displays which show how gold leaf is made and applied, as well as gold leaf works of art, and visitors can learn about the history of gold leaf production and view dazzling examples of the craft."

Kanazawa Yasue Gold Leaf Museum at 1-3-10 Higashiyama in Kanazawa, Japan is worth the price of admission, is fascinating, and for me, a quick breeze through. Interesting to learn the history...

This shrine is at Higashiyama1-Chome, Kanazawa City. Erected about 1300 years ago as Tamonten Shrine, it is also called Bishamonsan. Originally the feudal lord, Maeda Toshiiewas enshrined in this place and venerated as a guardian against the unluckykimon gate. (It is currently relocated to Oyama shrine in Kanazawa City). The Setsubun Festival is held here annually and local geisha perform the bean throwing festivities.

Located near the center of the old town in Kanazawa, Utasu Shrine seems ordinary at first glance. Yet a closer inspection reveals some unexpected residents lurking about.

The Izumi Kyoka Kinenkan Museum is a museum in the Shimoshin-cho district of Kanazawa City, dedicated to the life and works of author Izumi Kyoka. Built on the site of Izumi’s childhood home, the Museum uses displays of Izumi’s first editions and manuscripts, personal items, etc., as well as special thematic exhibitions, to help visitors develop a closer understanding of the world that Izumi portrayed in his fiction, as well as his own literary career. Talks on various subjects relating to Izumi Kyoka are held in Museum’s lecture hall on an occasional basis.

A museum located in Higashiyama, Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture dedicated to collecting, preserving, and displaying items connected to the works of Shusei Tokuda, considered one of the three great literary masters of Kanazawa. The museum's collection primarily consists of items which belonged to the author, drafts written in Tokuda's own hand, letters, and first edition books. The museum's standing exhibition traces the author's life and celebrates his achievements. There's also an exhibit which recreates the library Tokuda enjoyed while alive and an audio corner where you can use tablet and hear excerpts from the author's works read aloud. If you make a reservation at least one week in advance, you can receive a guided tour of the museum from a volunteer.

This Buddhist temple is counted as one of Japan’s three greatest Marici (Buddhist goddess of war) temples, alongside the Tokudaiji Temple in Tokyo and the Zenkyoan Temple, a sub-temple of the Kennin-ji Temple, in Kyoto. The temple enshrines a statue of Marici which was used as a protective charm by the samurai general Maeda Toshiie, the first lord of Kaga Domain. Standing at the midpoint of Mt. Mukaiyama in what would be the unlucky “kimon” northeast of Kanazawa Castle, the temple was built by Kaga Domain’s chief vassal Toda Shigemasa on the order of Maeda Toshinaga, the second lord of the domain. The grounds offer a sweeping view of the homes along the Asano River as well as the Higashi Chaya District. The five pine trees standing on the temple grounds served as material for a novel written by Kanazawa-born author Kyoka Izumi. The temple is also famous for its sunsets, and even Japanese literature researcher Donald Keen once praised the scenery visible from the site.

"This cultural museum conveys the teahouse culture of Kanazawa to the present time. The museum building is a typical teahouse that was actually used during the Edo period. The first floor is used for art exhibitions and displays the luxurious colorful hairpins once used by Geisha. The second floor is a spacious drawing room, with vivid blue and red walls. The courtyard has a beautiful ""suikinkutsu"" (a buried earthen jar that makes sounds due to dripping water), also not to be missed."

  • Higashi Chaya Kyukeikan Rest House
    Travel / Tourism
    Ishikawa Kanazawa-shi
A rest house where visitors can casually experience the kind of atmosphere a town-dwelling commoner might have enjoyed on a daily basis in the Edo period. Operating out of a restored Edo period townhouse, the rest house is located close to the entrance to the Higashi Chaya District, a popular Kanazawa sightseeing destination. Here much of the teahouse architecture still stands from when the area was a prospering red light district between the Edo and early Meiji periods, and these structures have collectively been designated an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings.

“Gigetsu Kyoketsu” was a masterpiece written in the early part of Meiji period literary master Kyoka Izumi’s career. This monument was erected in 1957 on a spot where stagecoaches used to depart from as depicted in that novel. The monument stands on the bank of the Asano River a 10-minute drive from Kanazawa Station. It is said the character of Taki no Shiraito was a representative of the ideal woman Izumi pursued throughout his life.

Long, thin Ishikawa prefecture runs along the Sea of Japan up into Noto Peninsula. Highlights of the seaside towns lining the west coast include Kanazawa, often described as a "Little Kyoto" thanks to its old wooden tea houses and geisha culture as well as its picturesque Japanese garden, Kenroku-en.
