A museum which displays Suzu ware, a form of Japanese pottery originating in the middle ages. The museum’s exhibits include superb examples of Suzu ware and Sue pottery, artefacts from archeological excavations, examples of how these potteries were used, and numerous pieces of Suzu ware which slept at the bottom of the ocean for ages after the ship that was transporting them sunk mid-journey. The museum also has a kiln built in 2011 modeled after the ruins of a kiln used in the early 13th century. The museum also displays pieces fired in this kiln.

This is the second time we visited the Suzu Ware Museum. The first time, the dark (black) ceramics put us off, and we walked out without much of a second thought. This time, when we walked in, we...

This collection of structures, a symbol of Kanazawa Castle Park, was newly restored in 2001. Its total area spans 1,900 square meters. Like the Ishikawa Gate and Sanjikken Nagaya, it is covered with lead roof tiles and so-called Namako walls. The three-tier, three-story Hishi Yagura and Hashizume-mon Tsuzuki Yagura turrets are connected by the two-tier, two-story Gojikken Nagaya gallery. It is believed the structures would have been used to protect the outer citadel in battle, and features such as ports for dropping rocks and lattice windows with gaps sized for guns, as well as its outer wall designed to prevent against fires attest to its defensive strength. It is the largest of any such structure in Japan built as part of a wooden castle from the Meiji period onward. The structure operates as a museum facility and incorporates universal design principles up to the second floor, including a stair lift and elevator.

An art museum located close to the Machino River a 30-minute drive from downtown Wajima City. The museum is housed in a remodeled old rice granary building which has been designated a National Tangible Cultural Property. The museum displays over 250 works of art collected by the Nansoh, a wealthy family which prospered as the hereditary village headmen of imperial lands in the Edo period. Here visitors can see pieces by famous masters, including paintings by the great ink and wash painters Sesshu Toyo and Tawaraya Sotatsu, and pottery by Kyoto potter Ninsei Nonomura. The museum also contains restored areas which reveal what Japanese estates of the time looked like, such as an omoya main residential building and an irori sunken hearth. 400-year-old pines and holly olive as well as Noto Rhododendron obtusum grow in the garden in front of the museum. A Kyoto-style Japanese garden sprawls in the courtyard, and here visitors can take a relaxing stroll while taking pictures of seasonal plants.

Connected to the shore by a bridge, the temple is also known by its nickname, the ""Ukiuki Benten"" (""Floating Benten Temple""). Legend has it that when a huge serpent was laying waste to the lakes of Katayamazu, Bhaisajyaguru sent the goddess Benten to suppress it, and in connection with this story, the temple is dedicated to the dragon king and Benten. A large fountain system has been built out on the lack behind the temple; the fountain, along with the bridge and temple, are lit up at night, creating a magical atmosphere."

An ancient Buddhist temple which records state was founded in 1593. Originally built in Echizen (now Fukui Prefecture), the temple was later moved to Kanazawa, then Toyama, and Kodatsunodai, before finally being relocated to its current grounds in 1615. The temple’s huge cherry tree, popularly known as the Ozakura, is a 400-year-old Shogetsu cherry. According to legend, the samurai Maeda Toshitsune, third lord of Kaga Domain, and his friend, the temple’s high priest, received the seedling from Komatsu Castle and planted it here on the grounds. A local landmark, the tree is six meters in circumference at the base and 14 meters tall; jutting out of the temple’s wall, its branches extending over the sidewalk outside. In most years, the tree blooms in mid-April, attracting large numbers of visitors.
