Uozu Aquarium is located in the Sanga district of Uozu City. The first aquarium on this site was opened in 1913, making it the first aquarium to be established on the Sea of Japan side of the country. The current Uozu Aquarium, which opened in 1981, is the third aquarium to occupy the site. Focused on the themes of “From the streams of the Northern Alps to the deep waters of the Sea of Japan” and “Taking a scientific look at Toyama Bay,” the Museum also uses Japan’s first transparent acrylic glass tunnel to showcase Toyama’s aquatic life forms. There is also a “Rice Field Biodiversity” zone, which features amphibians and reptiles such as Tonosama Frogs and Japanese Rat Snakes.

Visitors to this museum a 10 minute drive from Uozu Interchange on the Hokuriku Expressway can explore the natural mysteries of Uozu such as the buried forest and mirages. The passageway that extends from the museum's entrance exhibits 3.75 billion year-old artifacts of the geological history of eastern Toyama Prefecture. The museum also features easy-to-understand exhibits about the Uozu buried forest, a Special Natural Monument, how mirages work, the water cycle, and more. The wondrous underwater exhibit hall where the buried forest is preserved and displayed is a must-see. Visitors can also enjoy a panoramic view of Toyama Bay and the surrounding area from their rooftop observation platform.

This museum is particularly loved for its scenery, as the lobby offers a view of Namerikawa City, of course, as well as the Toyama Plain. The first floor offers displays on the history, folklore, and nature of Namerikawa, and the museum invites famous people from Namerikawa to come and present year-long. The second floor has a hall that can fit 100 people. The third floor is used most for special and temporary exhibits. The first floor also has a cafe perfect for a quiet break to enjoy its views of the Toyama Plain, Toyama Bay, the Noto Peninsula, and the grand Tateyama Mountain Range.

Toyama Areas

around-area-map

Toyama is one of the three prefectures that house the Japanese Alps, with its southern and eastern borders comprising one long stretch of mountains, out of which the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is forged. While traditional crafts fill the northern coastal cities of Toyama and Takaoka, thatched roof houses offer unrivalled views against a backdrop of fantastic scenery at Gokayama in the mountainous area in the south of the prefecture.
