Of all the traditional industries of Toyama Prefecture, Gokayama washi (Japanese paper) has the longest history. So long, in fact, that there are even records of it being dedicated to Maeda Toshinaga, the head of the Kaga Domain, over 500 years ago. This agricultural association located in Shimonashi, Nanto City, Toyama Prefecture sells this historic washi paper in the form of paper for paintings and calligraphy, washi-based folk crafts, and various washi-based sundries. It also launched the GOKKA brand of modern washi-based products such as gift bags and letter boxes. The association, which is located 1.5 kilometers east of the World Heritage site Ainokura Gassho-zukuri Village on Route 304, also offers paper-making lessons and facility tours.

    Toyama Pref. Toyamashi Mizuhashikainazaki 482-8
Visitors at this museum can experience firsthand the history of Toyama's famous kamaboko (a type of processed seafood). The museum is divided into three main areas, the Exhibit Corner, Tasting Zone, and the Artwork Kamaboko Observation Zone, where visitors can watch, eat, and make to their hearts content. The museum offers a unique hands-on activity in which participants can make their own colorful fish-shaped kamaboko. This activity, popular with families with children, is possible thanks to the favorable natural environment of Toyama. The museum also offers samples of many food items, including konbumaki (seafood wrapped in seaweed), akamaki (adzuki bean paste sandwiched in sponge cake and wrapped with rice cake), kamaboko snacks, and more.

Toyama Areas

around-area-map

Toyama is one of the three prefectures that house the Japanese Alps, with its southern and eastern borders comprising one long stretch of mountains, out of which the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is forged. While traditional crafts fill the northern coastal cities of Toyama and Takaoka, thatched roof houses offer unrivalled views against a backdrop of fantastic scenery at Gokayama in the mountainous area in the south of the prefecture.
