    The Yakushusho-no-Yakata Kanaoka-tei Residence is a museum located on Prefectural Route 177 in 1 Chome, Shinjo Town, Toyama City. The museum has exhibits on traditional medicine manufacturing, focusing on the Toyama medicine industry, which has a history going back 300 years. The museum’s main building was built in the early Meiji period, and was originally a store belonging to the Kanaoka family of medicine vendors, who made an important contribution to the development of Toyama Prefecture by investing in infrastructure projects, banks, a university, etc. A wide variety of exhibits, including an entire wall of traditional medicine storage cupboards, give visitors a real sense of the history of Toyama’s traditional medicine industry.

    Gokayama Washi-no-sato (Traditional Paper-making Workshop) is the alternative name for Road Station Taira, a roadside rest area in Gokayama village, Toyama Prefecture. Gokayama Washi-no-sato features a “Washi Paper Craft Hall” that presents the history of traditional Japanese paper-making, which has been an important industry in Gokayama since ancient times, as well as a “Paper-making Experience Hall” where visitors can try making Gokayama-style paper for themselves inside a traditional Gasshozukuri-style farmhouse (experiential activities can be booked on the day of your visit). There is also a retail area selling local specialty products, a restaurant, etc., making this a great place to drop by while driving in the area.

    Of all the traditional industries of Toyama Prefecture, Gokayama washi (Japanese paper) has the longest history. So long, in fact, that there are even records of it being dedicated to Maeda Toshinaga, the head of the Kaga Domain, over 500 years ago. This agricultural association located in Shimonashi, Nanto City, Toyama Prefecture sells this historic washi paper in the form of paper for paintings and calligraphy, washi-based folk crafts, and various washi-based sundries. It also launched the GOKKA brand of modern washi-based products such as gift bags and letter boxes. The association, which is located 1.5 kilometers east of the World Heritage site Ainokura Gassho-zukuri Village on Route 304, also offers paper-making lessons and facility tours.

    相倉合掌造り集落にある和紙漉き体験館です。天狗のあしあとをさらに進んだ奥に位置しています。店名だと思いますが、和紙屋の看板も出ています。和紙漉き体験はしませんが、ショップでたくさんお和紙の製品が販売されています。職人の手漉きの「耳付きはがき」10枚セットを650円で買い求めました。

    Toyama Himi-shi Honmachi 4-9 (Himi-shi Education Bunka Center)
    This museum is in Honmachi, Himi City. The permanent exhibits are divided into four thematic sections: Introductory Display, Himi History, Himi's Fishing Industry, and Agricultural Living, and they also hold special exhibits related to local history. They have a diorama of the National Historic Site, Ozakai Cave Dwelling Site and other historical materials dating back to primitive times, as well as tools used in Himi's fishing industry, agriculture and other folk materials to bring the city's history and culture up close.

    氷見市の歴史的な遺産を展示しています。一部撮影禁止のエリアも有りますが、ほとんどは可、それどころかネットでの登録を推奨しています。受付の方も大変丁重でした。結構対応してくれた方の感じというのは観光客の心に残ります。

    This plateau is in the western area of Midagahara. You can see a virgin forest of Tateyama cedar and beech and the Joganji River. The forest overflowing with broad-leaved trees including beech trees that are over 200 years old is also famous as a popular bird-watching spot where many birds gather every year in the early summer. Chosen as one of Japan's Top 100 Forest Bathing Areas, there are many people who come to take in the forest atmosphere and for nature walks. In front of Bijodaira Station stand a couple of legendary Bijosugi (beautiful lady cedar) trees, which are known as a symbol for the fulfillment of love.

    Toyama Kurobe-shi Ikuji Aimonocho
    This portable bridge crosses Kurobe Port, in the Ikuji district of Kurobe City, Toyama prefecture. It was built during the Showa era to allow crossing of Kurobe Port to expand the port, and at first was a full draw-bridge style, but now half of the bridge rotates to allow passage. It's a rare design, and was the first such rotating half-bridge in Japan.

    This roadside station in Miyazawacho, Tonami City, Toyama Prefecture is a five-minute drive from JR Johana Line Tonami Station. Its restaurant, Tonami Sodachi, offers cuisine made with ingredients from Tonami and Toyama Prefecture, such as their Okado somen noodle set meal and their Tonamino onion curry set meal lunches. At dinner, the restaurant offers banquet-style dinners featuring dishes such as butamotsu-nabe (pork tripe hot pot) and shabu-shabu (hot pot) made with Toyama grown pork. The station's other facilities includes a tourist information center, Promenade Momiji, a full-service steak house, Tonamino no Sato, a farmer's market offering local vegetables and other products, and a museum shop featuring souvenirs related to the area's famous tulips.

    This shop on the first floor of the CiC Building near JR Toyama Station specializes in local products and souvenirs. Some of its most popular products include slowly-grilled Shiroebi Juwari Senbei (broad velvet shrimp rice crackers) and Shiroebi Kakiage (broad velvet shrimp tempura). The shop carries a selection of Toyama souvenirs such as Kit Kats made with the famous Toyama sake Masuizumi, as well as Hangontan, a famous confection made to look like an Etchu-Toyama kusudama (decorative paper ball). It also offers marine products such as wild-caught Japanese amberjack and firefly squid, curry made with Himi-gyu beef, local Etchu Toyama sake, Unazuki beer, and more. The shop also holds periodic events such as farmer's markets offering locally-grown vegetables, bread sales, and so on.

    As the name suggests, this free observation deck offers views of Toyama Port. Visitors can look down on the good old townscape of Iwase from 20 meters up. On clear days, you can see the Toyama Bay as well as the Noto Peninsula and the Tateyama Mountain Range. The views are so good, you may end up staying longer than you intended, which may be the secret to the tower's popularity. The unique exterior design, reminiscent of a stone garden lantern, was modeled after the lighthouse that helped guide ships in the port during northbound ships sailing. Embued with a sincere wish for safe shipping and the prosperity of the port, the tower continues to watch over Toyama Port, a key port for trade throughout the Sea of Japan.

    This temple was opened at the end of the Muromachi period, by abbot Rennyo's leading disciple Akao Doshu. Must-sees include the thatched roof Sanmon gate, built about 300 years ago, and the monk's quarters particular peaked, gabled roof architecture. The Doshu Itokukan heritage museum exhibits treasures connected to Doshu and paintings by Munakata Shiko.

    西赤尾のバス停前にある浄土真宗のお寺。国指定重要文化財の岩瀬家の隣です。寺に隣接している遺徳館は、残念ながら冬季休館中でした。茅葺の山門が歴史を感じ、趣あります。本堂へは雪と雪囲いもあり、これまた残念ながら、本堂前までは行けませんでした。

The center offers simultaneous interpretation in six languages and can be also be used as venue for international conferences. The foyer leading to the halls can be used for events such as concerts and buffet parties sent in front of the backdrop of Toyama Castle Ruins Park. The first floor has an exchange gallery for citizens to enjoy that is also used for community events."

    This art museum exhibits works of Inami woodcarving, the traditional handicraft of Inami. Modeled after the layout of Zuisenji Temple, the museum building completely surrounds a central courtyard. Inside the museum, which was designed to capitalize on natural light, more than two hundred works of traditional handicraft and Inami woodcarving are on display and available for sale. In some cases, you can even see the craftsperson actually carving the pieces. Among the many abstract works of art on display, including partitioning screens?, lion masks, and carvings of Tenjin, the most stunning works are the transoms featuring kasanebori carvings, which are layered to create a three-dimensional effect. In all, the museum is a great place to enjoy the history and beauty of Inami woodcarving. The capsule vending machine offering lion-dog wood carvings is popular with people of all ages.

    井波彫刻バスを使って行きました。実際彫刻をされている方々の様子も見ることができ、興味深かったです。お土産物屋さんで買ったお饅頭がおいしかったです

    Ikenami Shotaro is an author responsible for popular historical novels such as Onihei Hankacho, Kenkaku Shobai, and Shikake-nin Fujieda Baian, He often visited Inami as his home town with familiarity and attachment. The exhibits here offer documents, self-portraits, autographs, photographs, and more that demonstrate the depth of communication between Ikenami Shintaro and the people of Inami, as well as books by the author and items loved by him.

    父方の祖父が井波出身とのことで、井波と縁のあった池波正太郎の記念館。八日町通りにあるよいとこ井波に併設されています。入館料は無料で、池波正太郎と井波の関わりなども展示されています。

    This hall exhibits tools related to Gokayama's three major industries of the Edo period: niter, sericulture, and washi paper. On the Ainokura gassho-style- village construction's designation as a national Historic Landmark in 1969, this museum was opened to collect folk materials from the region and display items related to the lifestyle nurtured by the local topography. It uses gassho-style old private home.

    相倉合掌造り集落の駐車場から一番奥まったところに位置しております。メインの散策路から少し離れており、見過ごしてしまいそうです。相倉民俗館とは異なり、五箇山の主要産業であった塩硝、養蚕、和紙づくりの道具などが展示されています。

    This art museum, opened in 1993, is focused on the private collection gathered overseas by Nishida Ansei of Fuji Chemicals. It is outfitted with four different galleries filled with artifacts like pottery, Buddha statues, and Russian icons gathered from China, Gandhara, Persia, Greece, Egypt and other lands connected by the ancient silk road. They also have temporary and special exhibits.

    円空×田中一光展でお邪魔しました。 円空の仏像はまず貸出されないらしく、館長の人脈で数年がかりで実現したそうです。 町外の方にはあまり知られていない美術館ですが、行ってみると面白いものが見れます。 入館料は600円です。

    This museum is adjacent to Roadside Station Taira Gokayama Washi-no-Sato, on National Route 156 in Iritani, Nanto City. It offers education about Gokayama's history and culture since primitive times, including its industries of niter and silk production. It also displays pieces during the National Washi Chigiri-e (torn-paper art) Exhibition.

    モダンな合掌造りのような大きな屋根が印象的です。道の駅たいらの駐車場から長い階段を上って入館しましたが、郷土館のすぐ横に駐車場がありました。建物の中央には、竪穴式住居が造られています。五箇山伝統産業の養蚕と硝煙について興味深く見ることはできました。

    The Tateyama Kurobe Alpen Route starts on the Toyama side, and ends at Tateyama Station in Nagano. There is a shop on the second floor of that sells Tateyama Yuki (mizumanju buns), which can only be bought at Tateyama Station and Bijodaira Station. These gently sweet dumplings use a cool jellylike wrapped around a ball of sweet bean paste. These popular products are excellent memories of Tateyama's history.

    This park is found along both banks of the Matsukawa River, which flows through Toyama City. It has over three kilometers of well-maintained trails, with 28 sculptures, and a line of about 500 cherry trees, It has been selected one of Japan Top 100 Sakura Viewing Sites, and you can observe the cherry blossoms from one of the sightseeing cruises running along the Matsukawa river.

Toyama is one of the three prefectures that house the Japanese Alps, with its southern and eastern borders comprising one long stretch of mountains, out of which the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is forged. While traditional crafts fill the northern coastal cities of Toyama and Takaoka, thatched roof houses offer unrivalled views against a backdrop of fantastic scenery at Gokayama in the mountainous area in the south of the prefecture.
