Shimakawa Ame Ten is a specialist Ame (rice-sugar toffee) store located in Furukaji Town, Toyama City. Shimakawa Ame Ten sells Bakuga Mizuame (thick malt syrup) that is made with traditional techniques using only malt and starch, with no added sugar. The maltose gives it a delicious, slightly sweet flavor; because, after eating it, your blood sugar level goes up only very slowly, Bakuga Mizu-ame is also eaten as a health food. The store also sells bean confectionery and other sweets made of their malt syrup.

"This historic Japanese confectionary established more than 260 years ago is an eight-minute walk from JR Isurugi Station in Toyama Prefecture. Their Usugori, thin rice crackers made with Shintaisho rice from Toyama Prefecture and topped with wasanbon (a special type of fine sugar made in Tokushima), have been part of the shop's tradition since its founding. They are notable for the way they melt in your mouth like ""thin ice"" as their name implies, as well as for the lingering flavor of the wasanbon. One of the shop's modern takes on this traditional sweet are its ""T-Go"" (T-5) rice crackers. These feature five different tones and tastes to enjoy, including salty cherry blossom and bitter matcha green tea."

Their famous ""tokonatsu"" sweets have been their flagship product since the Meiji period. These soft gyuhi rice cakes are stuffed with sweetened bean paste made from rare bitchu-shiroadzuki beans and sprinkled with wasanbon sugar that evokes an image of white snow. Take one bite and your mouth will be filled with the sweetness of the instantly-melting wasanbon sugar and the delicate fragrance of fine white adzuki beans. One of their most popular items is their Koshino Yakamochi, created to celebrate the shop's 180th anniversary. These rice cakes, made from glutinous rice from Toyama Prefecture known for its high viscosity, are stuffed with sweetened ultra-small Kurosengoku black adzuki beans."

Toyama Areas

around-area-map

Toyama is one of the three prefectures that house the Japanese Alps, with its southern and eastern borders comprising one long stretch of mountains, out of which the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is forged. While traditional crafts fill the northern coastal cities of Toyama and Takaoka, thatched roof houses offer unrivalled views against a backdrop of fantastic scenery at Gokayama in the mountainous area in the south of the prefecture.
