The shop makes and sells the Shutsujin-mochi, a confection inspired by the mighty Echigo-born military commander Uesugi Kenshin; as well as a variety of other superb Echigo confections. The Shutsujin-mochi was inspired by the legend of Uesugi Kenshin giving his troops mochi rice cakes before a decisive battle to give them strength and improve morale. The confection’s mugwort rice cake, brown sugar syrup, and toasted soybean flour combine to create an exquisitely delicious treat. The confection is also “Made in Joetsu”-certified, a qualification given to outstanding local specialty products by the Joetsu City government.

This Japanese restaurant is so popular with locals, ask about where to get good kamameshi rice dishes in Echigo and its name is sure to come up. Situated on a corner of the Koyasu apartment complex intersection close to Niigata Prefectural Central Hospital, here customers can enjoy piping hot kamameshi. The restaurant notably uses salts as the base flavor for its kamameshi instead of soy sauce. The resulting kamameshi is simple and thus conversely allows the innate flavors of the ingredients used to make it shine through. The restaurant makes its kamameshi to order, and on weekends it fills up with customers practically instantaneously. In addition to kamameshi, the restaurant also serves eel and chicken dishes as well as tempura and donburi rice bowls.

A casual izakaya pub just a five-minute walk from Naoetsu Station. Enjoy the flavors of Niigata in a lively atmosphere reminiscent of a sushi restaurant. Enjoy the seasonal local seafood flavors caught from the Sea of Japan right nearby. Come taste the changing seasonal seafood cuisine that varies as they deal only in whatever they can source from what's caught. Their menu includes a wide variety of dishes including assorted sashimi, grilled fish, poached fish, and fried fish and no matter how many times you visit there will always be something new to try. They also offer rice bowls and local sake made with their own home-grown rice.

    東京では食べれないお刺身が出てきますが、メジャーでないだけにそこまで美味しいという感じではなく、ちょっと期待しすぎでした。

This long-standing shop, established in 1624, has been making Japanese ame hard candies continuously since the Edo period. Standing along the old Hokkoku Highway, the shop sports a history-laden facade. Inside, the shop continues to make and sell awa-ame syrup, okina-ame and sasa-ame candies, and other Japanese confections. Okina-ame, made by hardening mizu-ame syrup with kanten algae gelatin, was once carried by the lords of Takada Castle when they made their biannual trip to Edo to give as gifts. Their chewy texture and light flavor makes it hard to stop eating them once you start. Sasa-ame, sold since the Bunka period, consist of thoroughly kneaded awa-ame syrup wrapped in a kuma bamboo grass leaf. The vaunted delights even make an appearance in Natsume Soseki’s celebrated novel, “Botchan.”

It was a cold and rainy winters day when we decided to sightsee around Joetsu and it was a longer walk than we thought to find this shop but we were determined to make what felt like a pilgrimage...

A restaurant located in the Akakura Kanko Hotel, a hotel with a bathhouse whose baths are free flowing spring water “kakenagashi” style from a natural hot spring. Situated on the top floor of the hotel’s Premium building, just erected in 2016, an elegant atmosphere covers the restaurant. The restaurant’s windows offer an expansive view of the area from1,000 meters above sea level. In the morning, the establishment serves an orthodox Western-style breakfast. Have the American breakfast, which comes with an omelet, sausages, and ratatouille; or the healthy breakfast, which comes with steamed vegetables and ham. Breakfast and dinner are by reservation only. If you are lucky, you just might get to see an “unkai” sea of clouds unfurling beyond the windows.

Located at the entrance to Ikenotaira Onsen Ski Resort, this ramen restaurant appears almost like a coffee shop. The interior also seems like a coffee shop, and it is designed this way so that female customers feel more at ease entering the restaurant. The restaurant boasts a ramen dish which uses a distinctive light soup, made from Japanese kelp boiled for half a day in an Echigo miso sauce. Because of the reasonable prices, there are always many customers in the restaurant. It is also popular with skiers in the winter, often filling every seat in the restaurant. At night, the restaurant transforms into a pub, selling snacks, cocktails and other alcohols in addition to ramen.

We came here after our xc ski morning, tired and in a bit of need of sustenance. This place was not quite full, but all the patrons were Japanese. There was an English menu. My friend got the ramen...
