    Nigata Pref. Tokamachishi Touge
At Hoshitoge, around 200 tanada (terraced rice fields) of different sizes dot the slopes; the appearance of the landscape changes with the seasons and with the time of day. During the period when the “Sea of Clouds” effect and the “Mizukagami” phenomenon (whereby the surface of the flooded rice fields shines like a mirror) are most common, the Hoshitoge area receives large numbers of tourists from throughout Japan. However, the fields are located on working farms, so visitors are asked to be respectful and considerate. The Hoshitoge terraced rice fields are located around 20-minute walk from Matsudai Station on the Hokuetsu Express Hokuhoku Line.

"This lodge was designed by the artist James Turrell. It was inspired by Junichiro Tanizaki's ""In Praise of Shadows"" and installed for the Echigo-Tsumari Art Field's 2000 Triennale. The wooden building incorporates plenty of Japanese elements and has a large front staircase. You can book overnight stays on their website, take tours of the facility, or use the rooms for daytime conferences and events. "

I love James Turrell, and I look up to see if there will be a James Turrell installation wherever I go. When my husband and I were planning our honeymoon to Japan, I was so excited to find out you...

A roadside station on National Route 252 in Uonuma City, Niigata Prefecture. It is a fairly small place but does have information on current traffic conditions, a souvenir shop, a shop that sells seasonal wild plants and vegetables, and an outlet which serves snacks, etc. The roadside station, built out of wood, has a bright, spacious atmosphere to it. At the food counter you can try some local food such as Atka mackerel sushi wrapped in bamboo leaves, char (type of trout) pressed sushi, and oboro tofu, and some sweet foods too, including homemade cakes and soft ice-cream.

An art museum born thanks to the efforts of the late Tsuneo Ikeda, a man of culture born here in Uonuma City (once the town of Koide). Ikeda was the founder of Baseball Magazine Sha and KobunSha, and the museum displays works of art and other items he collected as well as a variety of other cultural assets relating to sports, literature, and the arts. The museum’s permanent exhibition is divided into four sections. The KobunSha company published many works by Lafcadio Hearn (Koizumi Yakumo), and in turn the museum has an exhibition dedicated to the author. You’ll find this roadside station in Tokamachi City, Niigata Prefecture along National Route 252 nestled within an idyllic, seemingly satoyama (village-vicinity mountain) landscape. There’s a restaurant that serves popular homecooked local cuisine, and the building also has a direct sales store where you can purchase vegetables, local soba, Senda Rice, folk crafts, and more. You can visit the prefecture’s largest snow cavern as well, and there’s a walking trail with a suspension bridge too. Seasonal events are held throughout the year.

This hot spring inn, which also allows day trip bathing, is located 800 meters up in the mountains. The hot springs, which were discovered seven centuries ago by the monk Shirakumo, are famous for being one of the country's few hot springs said to relieve eye ailments. The secluded single-building inn was known to have been a favorite hot spring of the warlord Uesugi Kenshin. Bathers enjoying the elegant stone open-air baths can hear the sound of the wind moving through the trees and of water running in the clear streams. The baths also offer a great view of the starry night sky. The chloride spring waters are said to provide relief for cataracts, fundus hemorrhage, dry eye, and other eye ailments. The slightly lukewarm baths, fed entirely with spring water straight from the source, make them a good choice for a nice long bath. Bathers can also wash the eyes with the hot spring water just from sprue.

This tourist rest stop located at the base of Okutadami Dam serves as a hub for sightseeing in the Okutadami and Oze area and also offers local specialties and other products. The onsite restaurant has a close-up view of Okutadami Dam, which was the setting of the movie Whiteout. The terminal is popular for its great views of beautiful autumn foliage in the fall and of fresh greenery and Okutadami's natural splendor in the summer. Our recommended souvenirs are the terminal's Okutadami no Tsukudani (a simmered seafood preserve) and its original Ao Nanban Misokko Kyuri pickled cucumbers.
