A 10-minute drive from Nagaoka-Minami-Koshiji Smart Interchange, this shrine is beloved by locals of Nagaoka City as Iwatsuka no Oinari-san (the Inari Shrine of Iwatsuka). It enshrines the Shinto deity Amaterasu-shiragiku-hotoku-okami. The shrine is said to have originated when Itete-no-Himiko ordered Mononobe-no-Minowahime-no-Mikoto to build a shrine to Amaterasu, Hi no Miya no Miyashiro, in the Village of Nuna. The stunning beauty of the large vermillion-lacquered shrine building standing on a small hill attracts a large number of visitors from across the country. The shrine also being known as the Rosoku no Oinari-san (the Inari shrine of candles). Because of this, it is said that if someone writes their wish on a candle at the shrine's shinkosai (a festival celebrating the temporary transfer of the object of worship from its main shrine) held late at night each November 2nd, it will come true.

This ancient temple of the Shingon sect of Buddhism was opened by Gyoki Bosatsu in the year 733. It is a 30-minute taxi ride from Tsubamesanjou Station on the Bullet Train. Amida Nyorai Buddha is the principle deity of worship here and is normally kept from public viewing except once every 12 years on the Year of the Rat when it is unveiled. Furthermore, what is believed to be the oldest mummified monk in Japan, Kochi Houin is enshrined here which you can see (with an entry fee). The treasure hall contains a wooden statue of the monk and the mummy of a raijuu cat as well as long songs signed by the departed high priest Ryokan, all of which are free to see.

Banjindo is an external Buddha hall of Nichirenshu Myoko Temple located on a hill overlooking the Sea of Japan in Kashiwazaki City, Niigata Prefecture. It is said that the Buddhist priest, Nichiren, prayed here in 1274 for the return of 30 guardian deities. From the temple grounds visitors can see the city area, the magnificent Sea of Japan, the mountains of Yahiko, and Sado Island. The view from here of the setting sun is especially memorable. It is also a popular temple to visit during the New Year. The current temple was rebuilt after the original burned down in the Meiji period. The carving on the wall of the main hall is especially worth a look.

A 25-minute walk or seven-minute drive from Kashiwazaki Station on the JR Shinetsu Main Line. This Tea Ceremony Museum is within the Shoun Sanso Japanese Garden that was built in 1926. On display are many books and tools collected by Kimura Shigeyoshi who, as a tea ceremony teacher, taught many students and sought to popularize the tea ceremony. One of the biggest draws is that the tea utensils on display can actually be used for tea ceremonies. There is an outdoor tea room allowing you to enjoy your tea while gazing at the green leaves or autumn colors.

Climbing the 118 steps to the shrine (there is an elevator to make the shrine easily accessible to the elderly), the small grounds of the shrine come into view, surrounded on three sides by the mountains. In the main hall, business cards of people who come here to pray for their businesses to be profitable and for their economic fortunes to improve can be seen stuck into the wall. Following the defeat of the warrior of the Southern Court, the warrior came to live in Yomogihira, the land of the Ryujin (Dragon God), from the capital. This is a thatched-roof hamlet spreading out in a mountain valley about 40 minutes' drive from Kashiwazaki Interchange. This hamlet scene, with thatched roof cottages scattered surrounding rice fields, is unusual even for Japan. The shrine grounds and surrounding area have also produced many mid-Jomon era potsherds, and stories say that long ago this the descendants of the Kiso Yoshinaka clan lived here as well. It is also possible to use two of the cottages in the village as lodging (reservations necessary). With its grand scenery so reminiscent of old Japan, artists and photographers come year-round to take in the sights.

Shirayama Hime-jinja Shrine is located on a hill in Teradomari, Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture, which has been the guardian deity of the local area for a long time. The shrine has been built at the top of 125 stone steps which lead up from the shrine gate. The views from the top overlooking the Sea of Japan are wonderful. The enshrined deities are the two gods, Izanami no mikoto and Kukurihime no mikoto. They draw seafaring worshippers praying for safety at sea, and the deities are also worshipped as gods of national security and rural development. The spring festival is held on May 3rd and 4th every year where the daimyo’s procession takes place along the Hokkoku Kaido (north Japan highway).

    Leisure / Hobbies
    Niigata Santo-gun Izumozakimachi Amaze 166
“Tsumairi” is a Japanese architectural style in which the entrance is placed on one of the sides, or “tsuma.” During the Edo period, buildings were taxed based on the width of their frontage, resulting in large numbers of these long, narrow tsumairi houses standing side by side. Echigo once boasted the highest population density in the country, and Izumozaki flourished as a post station town on the old Hokkoku Highway. This facility, standing on a piece of flat ground sandwiched between a small hill and the Sea of Japan, reproduces the traditional layout of a tsumairi home and serves as a rest area for tourists and as a community gathering space. Inside, visitors can learn more about traditional architecture and its historical background, as well as tourist destinations in Izumozaki. Many tourists stop here to take a break in between exploring the town.

Through lighting and audio; and recreations of a magistrate’s ship and office, kitamaebune cargo ship, and Edo period townscape, visitors can immerse themselves in the majesty and atmosphere of the Edo period. Visitors can also decorate and create their own original paper balloon by pasting colored paper to a blank paper balloon, see a recreation of the birth home of the priest and poet Ryokan, and learn about the many writers and artists who visited and depicted Izumozaki.
