Yahiko-jinja Shrine, situated at the foot of Mt. Yahiko in Yahiko Village, Nishikanbara County, Nigata Prefecture, is a shrine of the old Echigo Province and even appears in the Manyoshu (collection of Japanese poetry). The enshrined deity, Ame-no-Kaguyama-no-Mikoto, has long been widely worshipped as the god of culture and development in Echigo Province. The impressive shrine building, erected in front of the backdrop of cedar and zelkova forests and Mt. Yahiko, was rebuilt in 1916. The Shida-no-otachi long sword, designated a national important cultural property, and other weapons connected with Minamoto No Yoshiie, Minamoto no Yoshitsune, and Uesugi Kenshin, are on display in the shrine’s treasure hall.

This Shingon Buddhist temple is halfway up Mt. Kugamiyama, a 15-minute drive from Bunsui Station on the JR Echigo Line. Founded in year 709 it is the oldest temple in the prefecture. The temple is dedicated to the Amitabha Buddha which is revealed only once out of every 12 years, the Year of the Rat. It is said that Uesugi Kenshin would pray for victory here and that praying here can bring various benefits such as warding off evil, wishes being answered, and safe travel. In 1914 the hut in which monk Ryokan secluded himself during the latter part of the Edo period was rebuilt and it is still open for viewing today. Further legends regarding Yoshitsune and Shuten-Doji surround the temple.

Honjo-ji Temple in Sanjo City is the head temple of the Hokkeshu, Jinmon school of Buddhism. It is located directly west of the JR Sanjo Station. It was founded in 1297, by Nichiin, one of Nichiro's disciples, who was himself, a disciple of Nichiren. The current main hall was built in the Meiji period, and the seven magnificent buildings - the main hall, guest house, bell tower, pagoda, Senbutsudo, Banjindo and main gate are all contained within temple compound, covering almost five acres of land. There is also a garden within the compound, called the Sankien, which is maintained by the city residents and the temple's followers. In the fall, the autumn leaves have an almost otherworldly appearance.

  • Okozu Bunsui Levee

    Niigata Tsubame-shi Gosengoku
The Shinano River is a large, class A river which has caused flood disasters since ancient times. This levee was built in order to divert a portion of rising waters to the Sea of Japan, thus preventing catastrophic flood damage on the Echigo Plain. This levee was completed in 1922 on a section of the river closest to the Sea of Japan where it makes a drastic turn to the east. Cherry tree planting began in the area even before the levee was complete, and today it has become known as one of the top cherry blossom viewing destinations in Niigata. When the flowers are in full bloom, the trees are also lit up at night, enabling visitors to enjoy their beautiful blossoms in the evening as well. From October through March, over 1,000 swans also migrate and overwinter here.
  • Otogo Shrine Thatched Hut
    Travel / Tourism
    Niigata Tsubame-shi Kugami
The shrine office of a shrine subordinate to Yahiko Shrine. The Soto Buddhist monk Ryokan moved into this thatched hut in 1816 after the Gogoan hut in which he had spent his prime had deteriorated with the years and his aging body made it difficult for him to climb and descend the mountain on which it was located. During the ten years Ryokan spent here, his art and calligraphy reached their highest maturity, and the monk produced many great works. The current hut was rebuilt in 1987. A stone monument, erected in 1858, stands on the grounds and is believed to be the oldest extant such monument inscribed with a poem by Ryokan.
