This popular kaiten-zushi restaurant sources all of its fish and rice from Sado. It is located in Pier Bandai, in Chuo Ward, Niigata City, Niigata Prefecture. The restaurant expertly selects fish freshly caught in the morning off the coast of Sado, and uses them that very same day. The many different types of sushi prepared by the chefs in front of their customers are a harmony of fresh fish and plump, glossy rice. For customers interested in the individual dishes, the salt-grilled blackthroat perch and assorted sashimi set are popular. There are both table seating and counter seats available, and the restaurant is very convenient for families and group.

This is my favourite sushi restaurant in Niigata. Though you ave to wait in line for a while( sometimes an hour), it’s worth waiting. You have 3 options of seating. Sushi counter when you are alone...

This standing soba restaurant is on the first floor of the Bus Center building, a seven-minute walk from JR Niigata Station. The curry and rice served here has fans both within and outside the prefecture, and it has even been introduced on national television, so there’s often a line in peak hours. The yellow, spicy curry roux is full of the rich flavor of the meat and vegetables. Add the sauce on the table to enjoy a different taste with the same dish.

A specialty store of Niigata's famous products centering on Japanese sake, located in the CoCoLo Niigata West Building in JR Niigata Station. The store sells a variety of products such as Niigata's local sake, rice, soy sauce, and sweets, every day crowded with tourists shopping for souvenirs. There is a sake tasting room where customers can select five different types of sake among those from all the sake breweries in Niigata Prefecture, making it an irresistible space for sake lovers.

Quick visit to the station to do some sake tasting. Cute idea to have the tokens and the sake vending machines. Staff was super nice in explaining to us how to read the vending machines. I tried...

Nigata Pref. Nigatashi Chuou-ku Furumachidori 6-973
This restaurant located in Chuo Ward, Niigata City, Niigata Prefecture, specializing in tonkatsu (breaded, deep-fried pork cutlet) was founded in the early Showa period and is famous for being the birthplace of the Niigata specialty tarekatsu-don. They continued to open many more branches and franchises while safeguarding the unique taste created on the food stall where it all began. The tarekatsu-don with five thinly cut, tender pork cutlets dipped in a sweet soy-sauce based tare, or sauce, and combined with a piping hot bowl of rice, is a unique Niigata taste popular with many people outside of the prefecture. Upstairs you’ll find seating at tables while downstairs it’s all at the counter, making it an easy place to grab some food even when you’re by yourself.

This famous ramen shop is a representative shop for its miso ramen. It is located in Nishikan Ward, Niigata City, Niigata Prefecture. The miso ramen for which it is famous, is made by slowly boiling carefully selected ingredients, and creating a rich red miso base soup. The deep flavor of the garlic compliments the homemade noodles created with wheat produced in Japan. When adding the “original diluted soup,” customers can enjoy the light, refreshing flavor. The interior of the shop is spacious, with both slightly raised seating and counter seats. It becomes quite crowded during peak times.

Suzaka-ya is a soba restaurant located about three minutes on foot from the Bandai Exit of Niigata Station. It serves Hegi Soba, made from pure buckwheat grown near the nearby city of Ojiya with funori seaweed as a binding. Served arrayed in a wooden box called a “hegi,” it is characterized by a firm yet smooth texture. Suzaka-ya also serves such traditional Niigata foods as Noppe and a full range of local varieties of saké.

This sightseeing facility in Nishikan Ward, Niigata City, Niigata Prefecture provides information on the Iwamuro Onsen (hot spring) region’s history, traditions, culture, and tourist spots. There’s a tourism information area, a rest area, a footbath, a dining hall serving local cuisine such as the famous “kensayaki” and “rice flour ramen,” making it great as a pit stop on drives. There are also regional specialty products and souvenirs for sale. The plaza and exhibition room of the “Dento Bunka Denshokan (Traditional Culture Museum)” host various seasonal events.

This Japanese-style restaurant is located near the JR Niigata Station. Its purely Japanese appearance, like a sake brewery, is attractive to customers. The relaxing interior, from which the garden can be seen, is an elegant space that can be used for both course meals and for entertaining guests. The Sado Koshihikari rice, cooked in copper pots and traditional cooking stoves, is highly reputed, and there are an abundance of dishes that use Niigata’s specialty products, such as blackthroat perch, Sado sushi and A4 and A5 rank Murakami beef. The alcohol-tasting six drinks of Echigo menu, which allows customers to compare the taste of six different sake, is also very popular.

This ramen shop in Chuo, Niigata just off the Shichousen Road is known for their W-Soup which strikes a harmonious balance between animal and seafood products. Another draw on their menu is their tsukemen (dipping ramen) for which they've gotten over 300 orders in a single day. Their dipping broth brings together the flavors of myoga ginger and perilla and leaves a refreshing aftertaste. A regular serving is 240 grams of hirauchi (flat) noodles, you can order a larger serving for free. They are also known for their giant chashu pork made from the rib and thick menma sliced bamboo shoots.

This conveyor belt sushi chain which refuses to be “just” a conveyor belt sushi restaurant takes great pride in the freshness of its sushi. Seeking to deliver to its customers the freshest seafood possible, the chain is headquartered in the Niigata Central Wholesale Market. Here in the Uchino branch, you can enjoy seafood purchased that very day at the auctions held at 5 a. m. in front of the chain’s headquarters. The restaurant’s spectacular tuna butchering shows, held every Saturday evening, entrance children and adults alike. Also great is that you can eat kamatoro, fatty tuna from around the collar bone which can only be gathered in very small amounts from any one fish, at reasonable prices.

This Japanese confectionary shop, established in 1883, was the inventor of Niigata’s famous bamboo leafdumplings. The shop’s fifth and sixth generation heads continue to make these dumplings according to the same recipe but also seek to make new and innovative products. The bamboo leaf dumplings are the shop’s signature product, and for these tasty treats, it’s all about the ingredients. Using ingredients produced in the prefecture as much as possible, the shop still makes them the old-fashioned way. Japanese mugwort is stocked from specially contracted farms growing them on embankments in the prefecture, and the bamboo leaves used to wrap the confections comes from kumai bamboo leavesgrowing amidst the mountains of Asahi and Ide. The dough is made using an original flour stone milled from Niigata-raised Koshihikari rice.

A restaurant adjoining Roadside Station Aga-no-Sato situated along National Route 49. Located on the second floor of the station, here customers can enjoy a relaxing meal along with a view of the Agano River just across the way. The chef particularly recommends the special oyakodon chicken and egg over rice, which is topped with huge chunks of brand name Koshi no Tori chicken raised on herbs amidst the area’s abundant natural beauty. The choice dish consists of flavorful thigh meat wrapped in thick, creamy scrambled eggs seasoned with Japanese dashi stock. It also comes with a seasonal nimono stewed dish, aemono side, homemade pickles, and soup; a hearty meal choice, its reasonable price is also a plus.

A long-standing sushi restaurant situated along Honcho-dori Avenue in Chuo Ward, Niigata City, Niigata Prefecture. The shop was opened in the early Showa period by the first owner, who sought to bring Tokyo-style raw sushi to Niigata. Today, Sushi Yasu continues to preserve the traditional tastes and techniques of that time. The restaurant uses only fresh, natural ingredients in its sushi, including seasonal local fish. Popular menu items including the “kiwami,” a set of 10 pieces of sushi, dashi-maki-tamago rolled omelet, and bowl of soup, the lunch chirashi-zushi; and the homemade castella Tamago-yaki omelet—only a small number of which are offered each day. The restaurant only has eight counter seats and “koagari” raised tatami mat dining area with a single table. Sushi Yasu is popular not only with locals but also tourists from within the prefecture and beyond.
