    In this museum in Murakami City, Niigata Prefecture, themed material regarding Murakami’s specialty product salmon, is on display. In the Murakami dialect, “Iyoboya” means salmon. Visitors can see how the salmon were fished in the Miomote River as well as an introduction to Murakami’s history and culture etc. in the museum. Visitors can also see under water from the observation window made in the distributary of the Miomote River. According to the season, you may encounter the scene of salmon swimming upstream or eggs hatching.

    村上の三面川沿いにあります。 会館の前には車は停められず、普通車はちょっと離れた所に駐車場があるので、冬は辛いです。 ここは鮭の博物館。 江戸時代、ここを鮭の名産地にした、青砥武平治が顕彰されています。 他にも、人工孵化をしている鮭の稚魚や、三面川の分流である「種川」をガラス越しで観察できたり、600円の価値がある博物館だと思います。 鮭の他にも、サケ科のニジマスなども展示されていました。

    This tourism facility operates as a farmer’s market, located in Tsukioka, Shibata City, Niigata Prefecture, with the theme of food education and “local production and local consumption.” At the farmer’s market, local farmers sell fresh vegetables, fruit, flowers, rice and other products. Inside the farm, there are such shops as the farmer’s restaurant, which uses local ingredients aplenty for its buffet, an Italian restaurant, whose firewood kiln-cooked pizza is highly recommended, a handmade soba restaurant and a sweet shop. There are also many facilities that children will enjoy, such as the rabbit-feeding plaza and the largest swing in Japan.

    Machiya Gallery Yamakichi is a gallery housed within one of the old townhouses, or machiya, which has been designated as one of the nation’s Registered Tangible Cultural Properties. The building still retains the charm of the Edo period with its stylish black tiles and window grills. The gallery mainly handles pieces from local craftsmen and handicrafts made by traditional craftsmen with quite a range on offer such as salted salmon patchwork, and Uetsu shinafu (a kind of woven textile). Inside the building you can see the hearth and living room and also you can see furnishings like the old wooden panels and sliding doors which were fashionable at the time. The nearest station is Murakami Station.

    A park adjoining the Tanegawa River, a tributary of the Miomote River. Trees and flowers, an arbor, and a playground are arrayed around the park’s central grass lawn. Inside the park, visitors can see rainbow trout swimming in an artificial river. Visitors can also enjoy seasonal scenery, including cherry blossoms in spring and fireflies in summer. A statue in the park depicts Aoto Buheiji, a retainer of Murakami Domain in the Edo period who invented the Tanegawa system, the first system in the world to successfully naturally breed salmon. The adjoining Iyoboya Kaikan museum provides information on Murakami salmon, which records state were even officially gifted to the nobility in distant Kyoto long ago during the Heian period.

There museum’s areas where visitors can hold native Japanese rhinoceros beetlesand stag beetles, and feed swallowtail butterflies, are also popular.

    Tour participants can enjoy octopushunting, an autumn tradition on Awashima Island. Tours are held three times a day on Saturdays and Sundays from September through October. Anyone elementary school aged and older can master the unique local technique, which involves dangling a bamboo pole with a red cloth wrapped on one end in front of an octopus and scooping it out of the water when it latches on with its tentacles. Because hunting is conducted on a shallow shore, you don’t need a particularly robust coat or other heavy ocean fishing gear. Contests are sometimes held to see who can catch the largest octopus, with the top catchers receiving awards and local specialty products as prizes. An advance application is required, so be sure to apply with plenty of time before the day you intend to go.

    A health and exercise park which boasts spacious, 80 hectare grounds. Divided into five zones, the park was built to establish a comfortable space for prefectural residents, promote their health maintenance, and stimulate the community. The Nature Observation and Research Zone has a lovely, undulating bird watching trail, perfect for taking in a little forest therapy. Niigata Aicho Center Shiunji Saezuri no Sato is located inside the park; the facility holds bird watching sessions and engages in a variety of research regarding wild birds. The Health and Exercise Zone has a multipurpose field which can be used for soccer, rugby, and other recreational activities, and is also the location of Shiun no Sato, an activity and spa center. Many people come here to relax and soak in a hot spring bath after an activity-filled day.

    This swimming beach is located about a 30-minute drive from the center of Murakami City. A broad beach with finely grained sand extends through Kuwagawa, a hamlet near the basin of the Sasakawa River, an area known as one of the 100 Landscapes of Japan. There is a rocky area nearby that is ideal for playing with rocks and fishing. Since the beach is also near a roadside station and an excursion boat dock, many people come here to barbecue or to participate in marine activities. The sun setting off Awashima Island is a splendid sight, and as sunset approaches, traffic comes to a halt.

    Seiro town, located about 20 minutes' drive from Niigata city, is one of Japan's leading fruit producing areas. They are the biggest producer of cherries in Niigata prefecture, with about 90% of the total crop. Seiro, naturally, has several sightseeing cherry orchards. If you'd like to try cherry picking yourself, contact the farms directly to check availability. Cherry varieties go in season at different times. Most years, you can pick kokanishiki and takasago from late May; satonishiki and benishuho are in season from mid-June. Keep a look out for the red flag inscribed with Sightseeing Cherry Farm Association In Japanese.

    A vineyard which grows its grapes entirely organically with reduced pesticides and without the use of any herbicides whatsoever. Offering safe, healthy grapes, the farm received the Eco Farmer certification for its implementation of environmentally friendly, conservation-oriented farming in 2006. The grapes are grown under all-weather coverings on the farm’s spacious grounds, ensuring visitors can enjoy a fun and relaxing grape picking session even on rainy days. The farm grows a wide array of grapes, including stapes such as huge Kyoho and Shine Muscat as well as highly sweet Shinano Smile and Kaiji, nicknamed the red muscat. The farm has toilets for the physically challenged, ensuring that wheelchair users can also enjoy grape picking in comfort.

  • Tsukioka Karion Park

    To reach this park you can take a 10-minute bus from Tsukioka Station on the JR Uetsu Main Line, then walk two-minutes, or a 10-minute walk north-west from Tsukioka-Onsen. This multi-purpose green space is symbolized by Karion Tower and is one of the 100 most sacred places for couples in the country. During the spring the park is awash with the colors of the sakura cherry blossoms and the rapeseed flowers. There are lots of ways to enjoy yourself in the park including play equipment for children, a hall housing a sword collection, including blades by Tsukioka's own living national treasure Amata Akitsugu, and a glass studio where you can try making your own glass creations.

    This public botanical garden is found within Tainai Resort, a 15-minute drive from JR Nakajo Station. It is open every year from early April to early November. It is characterized by its flower beds which are laid out like flower petals from a central fountain. From spring to fall you can see over 80,000 plants covering some 50 different varieties. There is a rock garden with alpine plants and an open lawn area giving you the chance to enjoy the flowers while strolling about. There is also the Flower House where you can buy locally cultivated foodstuff, and areas for children and parents to have fun.

    This beach area allows surfing, boardsailing, and water skiing. That means it's hugely popular with those looking to enjoy marine sports, drawing tourists from all over. The beach is about a 10-minute drive from the Seiro-Shibata Interchange on the Nihonkai-Tohoku Expressway in Niigata Prefectural Shiunjikinen Park. With a wide shallow beach and great water quality even children can play safely. The beach is known for its family accommodations with campgrounds and hot spring bathing facilities. Every year on August 12th the beach serves as a popular viewing place for the fireworks display put on as part of the Castle Town Shibata Festival.

    This white sandy beach and azure sea are located right next to Ajirohama's downtown area. During the summer season lots of families come to play at the beach. And with plenty of fishing spots in the area as well as year-round surfing it's a popular spot for all sorts of marine sports. Nearby the beach with a prior reservation you can try your hand at dragnet fishing with the local fishing coop. Every year on the first Sunday of August a giant firework display is put on over the sea as part of the Seiro Summer Festival. Fireworks are set off just 350 meters off shore culminating in an amazing spectacle with a Niagara Falls fireworks finale.
  • Kangawa Beach

    This is the largest beach in Sanpoku district, Murakami City and it is a 10-minute walk from JR Echigo-Kangawa Station on the Uetsu Main Line. While not shallow, it stands out for its beautiful scenery made by the white sandy beach and emerald waters. Beach umbrellas are available for rent along with dressing rooms and showers which are available for a fee. You can BBQ on the beach and there is space for motor home camping near the parking lot. Lifeguards are on duty from mid-July to mid-August.
  • Shibata Castle Park

    This park is a 15-minute drive from the Seiro-Shibata Interchange on the Nihonkai-Tohoku Expressway and is the site of Shibata Castle. It is a famous place to come during cherry blossom season with 260 Yoshino cherry trees and another 30 double-flowered cherries trees growing on the grounds. Every year mid-April when the cherry trees are blooming the flowers and the castle are lit up at night providing a magical view. Also, every January there is a zoni (rice cake soup) making event drawing traditional chefs from throughout the country.

    This park is a 10-minute drive from JR Shibata Station and can be enjoyed year-round no matter the season. During cherry blossom season the blossoms encircle Masugata pond and the pond can also be used for athletic activities and fishing. During the summer 600 thousand irises bloom covering 300 breeds and the Shibata Iris Festival always draws lots of tourists. In the fall the mountains surrounding Ijimino Park are ablaze with autumn colors and during the winter swans migrate to the park.
