    A street situated along a National Route in Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture lined with seafood and souvenir shops popularly known as Sakana no ameyoko. Filled with the cries of merchants selling their wares, the street bustles with tourists seeking fresh, local ocean delicacies. Here you’ll a wide selection of seafood sold at delightfully reasonable prices, from seasonal items like sweet shrimp, squid, Japanese amberjack, horse mackerel, and sea bream, to high class selections like famed crimson snow crab and blackthroat seaperch. You’ll also be able to enjoy an abundance of dishes prepared with seafood from the Sea of Japan, such as hamayaki grilled fish and seafood rice bowls.

    A picturesque townscape sprawling along the old Yonezawa Highway in front of the Sekikawa Village Hall. The area is still deeply colored by the history of Sekikawa, an area which once flourished because of the transport of goods on the Arakawa River. The particularly eye-catching house visible from in front of the village hall is the Residence of Watanabe Family, a designated Important Cultural Property. The former home of a wealthy merchant family which built its fortune through loans to feudal lords and land reclamation, it is said that at its peak the family owned 700 hectares of rice paddies and harvested 900 bales of rice. The area is dotted with precious examples of Edo period upper class farming family residences such as the adjoining homes of the Sato and Tsuno families.

    The street resembles an arcade with its wooden eaves constructed over the pavement so that people can walk freely even at times of heavy snow. The total length of this covered walkway in the Takada region is 16 kilometers, the longest such covered street in Japan. It’s a sight characteristic of the many narrow, old wooden townhouses still remaining in Takada and the place retains the atmosphere of the old castle town. There are many tourist facilities among the old townhouses here so visitors can enjoy a good walk. The nearest station is Takada Station.
