This Japanese garden was built for the home of the family of Shibata feudal lord Mizoguchi. It is only a seven-minute walk from Shibata Station on the JR Hakushin Line. It was once known as the Shimizudani Palace and is now dedicated as a National Site of Scenic Beauty. It is a Kyoto style garden that uses the Eight Views of Omi. In the center is a large pond that reflects the Japanese character for water in cursive, with a number of tea houses scattered around. The tea houses are not open to the public but you are able to enter at set times during tea ceremonies. They are well known for their fall leaves viewing when the colorful leaves reflect beautifully in the water.

This English-style garden can be accessed by taking the Community Bus from JR Mitsuke Station to the Sangyodanchi / English Garden bus stop and then walking another five minutes. Designed by garden designer Kay Yamada to be friendly to the elderly and the physically challenged, the garden's plants are maintained by the Natural Gardening Club, a gathering of local volunteers. The garden is a great place to enjoy the beauty of each of Japan's four seasons. The garden also operates a nursery that raises flower seedlings for public facilities and other customers as part of a local greening movement.

Niigata Higashikanbara-gun Aga Machi Kanose 5860
A garden which has been planted with some 2,000 snow camellias spanning around 100 varieties. The garden is owned by Furusawa-ya, an inn situated at the foot of Mt. Kirinzan. The snow camellia, the official flower of Niigata Prefecture, was discovered and named here in Aga Town on Mt. Kirinzan in the Meiji period. Generations of the inn’s caretakers have painstakingly maintained the garden’s camellias. In most years, the flowers bloom from mid- to late April. Rivaling cherry blossoms in their beauty, they announce the arrival of spring in this region known as “snow country.” There is an entrance to the garden adjacent to the inn’s parking lot, and guests can visit the garden for free; accordingly, many staying at the inn like to take a morning stroll here.
