  • Bijin-bayashi Forest

    Bijin-bayashi Forest in Tokamachi, which has a different but equally beautiful appearance in every season of the year, is a forest of beech trees that were planted around 90 years ago, located on hilly ground in Matsuguchi; the elegant form of the beech trees led to the Forest being given the name “Bijin-bayashi” (“Forest of Beauties”). In winter, snowshoes can be rented from the nearby Echigo-Matsunoyama Museum of Natural Science. Bijin-bayashi Forest is located around 15minute bus ride from Matsudai Station on the Hokuetsu Express Hokuhoku Line.
  • Ginzandaira Basin

    Ginzandaira is a basin in the Shimo-oritate district of Uonuma City that is ringed by mountains, including peaks such as Mt. Arasawa-dake and Mt. Echigo Komaga-dake that rise to over 2,000 meters. It lies within the boundaries of the Echigo Sanzan-Tadami Quasi-National Park. Visitors can enjoy marvelous views of the imposing mountains and Lake Okutadami; there are campsites and hotel accommodation in the vicinity, along with hot springs, a multi-purpose activity center, boat trips, etc., making this a place where visitors can relax and enjoy nature.
  • Yuzawa Kogen Ski Resort/Panorama Park

    This alpine plant botanical garden within walking distance of Echigo-Yuzawa onsen town is about eight minute walk from Echigo-Yuzawa Station on the JR Joetsu Shinkansen Line. It is a seven minute ride on the ropeway to the peak, with a gorgeous view over the town the whole way. Open from late April to November, they offer walking and hiking tours through a garden of about 200 kinds of alpine plant, including the rare Himalayan blue poppy. Their activities like the Zipline Adventure, offering a thrilling ride through the trees, are also quite popular.
  • Sasagamine Highland

    This highland sits at 1,300 meters above sea level at the foot of Mt. Myoko, chosen as one of Japan's 100 famous mountains. It is 40 minutes by car from the Myoko Kogen Interchange and is well known for its beautiful autumn colors. Scattered with giant Japanese elms it gives the impression of a European plain and the walking paths, fields, and camp grounds are filled with seasonal flowers. From spring to fall crowds of people come to enjoy mountain climbing and trekking. The Sasagamine Loop Trail is a recommended walking course that takes about one hour to complete and will let you enjoy the verdant greens of spring or changing fall leaves. It loops around the ranch, Udana spring, Shimizugaike pond, and a German spruce forest.
