This well-established brewery was founded in 1764. It is located east of Niigata Station, along National Route 2, and is said to have been built on the site of a rice granary once owned by the Shibata clan. The current building was built at the end of the 19th century. The brewery is open to visitors all days of the week, and reservations are only necessary for groups of more than seven people. Tools used in the past to make sake are displayed here, and visitors can taste over ten kinds of pure rice wine. Thanks to the detailed explanations of the workers, even the most inexperienced can enjoy tasting the differences between the various types of sake. The brewery also offers non-alcoholic amazake for non-drinkers.

Well worth doing. The tour was great, very interesting and not too long. You might want to check when the English speaking tours are as it is not available with all tours. The Sake was lovely.

This is a winery located along the hilly coastal area in Nishikan Ward, Niigata City, Niigata Prefecture. In the vast vineyard there are various kinds of facilities such as a wine shop, a wine cellar, a restaurant, a bakery, a day-trip hot spring facility, an accommodation facility and an English garden. Wine is made from grapes grown in a climate where there is almost no snowfall and has low rainfall, where high heat is accumulated after the rainy-season, unique to the region. Wine tours, reservations required, are also held.

A stretch located in Niigata where all the wineries are concentrated. It’s a pity that when we visit, the season is already over for grapes and all we see is fruitless vines. But we visited the...

This winery in Minamiuonuma City has been making wine with skills cultivated in Bordeaux, France and grapes cultivated by Minamiuonuma's climate for over 40 years. Its wines are highly praised by wine professionals for their quality. The winery ages their wines in rooms chilled with natural snow. The winery's shop offers a selection of their wines, including their snow-aged wine sekki and wine-related items, as well as free wine tastings. The shop's restaurant serves cuisine made with fresh local ingredients as well as their wines.

While there were once over 200 breweries on Sado this is one of only five breweries that remain on the island. Henmi-Syuzou is the smallest of the group and was founded in 1868. They continue to only make small batches of sake that triumph in showing off the natural flavor of the liquor. Their famous Shinryou sake, a beloved drink that's a common dinnertime companion, derives its name from the Mano Goryo mausoleum for the Emperor Juntoku who was exiled to Sado after losing the Jokyu War during the Kamakura period. The sake is sometimes called by the friendly nickname Shinryou-san.

    Travel / Tourism
    Niigata Myoko-shi Saruhashi 636
A sake brewery established in 1875. Situated amidst the lush mountains of Saruhashi, the brewery continues to craft delicately flavored local sakes. Situated close to the border with Nagano Prefecture, this area receives some of the heaviest snowfalls in a prefecture already known for snow. When it is time to begin kanjikomi winter sake brewing, the brewery’s 140-year-old Japanese zelkova wood structure becomes enwrapped in a deep blanket of snow. The heavy snow covering creates a clean and stable environment, optimum conditions for creating sakes which demand extremely minute regulation during the brewing process. The brewery’s Ayumasamune sakes have a smooth and refreshing flavor and have long been loved for remaining tasting delicious no matter how long you drink them.
