A café situated inside a shed which belonged to an old shipowner’s home in Shukunegi, Sado City, Niigata Prefecture. The old-fashioned interior draws the eye with its old furnishings and black beams and pillars. The red tables, made from an old tarai-bune boat used in the area, are sure to make an impression. The café’s lunchtime pasta is made with chewy fresh noodles. The café also offers a popular homemade dessert menu, including cakes and zenzai sweet bean soup with shiratama rice flour dumplings.

Based on a recommendation by our tour guide, Fujiko-san, we had lunch at this charming restaurant situated next to the Edo Period Fishing Village of Shukunegi. The restaurant was very busy that day...

This sweets shop is located near Shinano River, in Chuo Ward, Niigata City, Niigata Prefecture. Its wooded entrance is one of the house’s defining characteristics. The shop cherishes the traditions of French confectionery, and it is well-known for the threefold flavor, fragrance and texture of the cakes and baked goods made here. The showcase inside the shop is lined with strawberry shortcakes, Mont Blanc aux marrons and other popular western confectionery. The shop also uses seasonal ingredients, such as mangos, peaches and pears to make cakes for each season.

夏場はかき氷も提供しています。オーダーして、お金を払い、イートインスペースで提供を待ちます。今回いただいたのは酒粕みるくという変わり種。酒粕と生クリームをホイップしたようなシロップが載っています。確かに酒粕の香りと味がしました。氷はどちらかと言うと荒削り。辛党の方にもおススメできます。

Chamonix is a long-standing coffee specialty shop, founded in 1973, and located in Chuo Ward in the city of Niigata, Niigata Prefecture. It has four locations in the city of Niigata and is famous for roasting its coffee in-house. The interior is a retro space, with antique-style table settings and furniture, redolent of the Showa period (1926–1989). The famous Chamonix Blend, carefully brewed with a syphon, features a unique richness and slightly bitter flavor. The shop is open Monday through Saturday from 7:00 a.m.

Located on a hill in Wakigawa, Murakami City, Niigata Prefecture, this cafe sits alongside a salt factory on the coast. Sea salt is derived the old-fashioned way by taking sea water from the sea in front of the factory and boiling it down in a wood-burning oven for over 15 hours. Here you can have a lovely, relaxing meal looking out over the beautiful clear waters and beach while enjoying the cool sea breeze. Popular dishes include the salted soft ice-cream, and salted rice balls. As well as selling homemade salt at the shop they also do tours of the salt factory.

笹川流れを見ながらソフトクリームを食べられます！おじさんの作っている塩をかけ放題です。塩工房が併設されており、塩を作っている様子が見学できます。ぐつぐつしていました。塩の数種のセットや塩飴などお土産になりそうなものも少しですがあります。

Furumachi Koji Seizosho is located in Chuo Ward in the city of Niigata in Niigata Prefecture. It specializes in koji, the fermenting agent for sake, and other fermented foods. The owner originally sold rice balls in Tokyo, but learned about Niigata koji and opened this shop here in order to make people more familiar with it. The shop’s flagship product is the Koji Drink, a sweet sake made with koji, which has a refreshing sweetness and goes down easily. In addition, the shop sells condiments and sweets made with koji, and its Koji Drink for takeout has received high marks.

This cafe that specializes in roasted coffee beans is located on the second floor of the retail store Fresh Coffee No.1. It is just a seven-minute walk from the main exit of Kashiwazaki Station on the JR Shinetsu Main Line. Enjoy the taste of fresh coffee using coffee beans roasted on the first floor of this hideaway-like store. Over 20 varieties of coffee are available including Fair Trade which are considerate to the growers and environment, and naturally cultivated coffee. Their most popular Jiyujin Blend has a mellow rich and bitter flavor. Their four types of homemade cakes are also highly regarded.

This cafe in the style of a modern Japanese hideaway is located inside of a renovated kominka (old Japanese-style house?) built over 90 years ago. The high ceilings and thick beams and pillars particular to kominka and the antique interior designed to match them combine to give the cafe a relaxed, leisurely atmosphere. Run by an elderly couple, the cafe offers many different types of coffee and latte drinks. Their hand-written menus give detailed descriptions of each of item in order to help customers chose the items that best match their tastes. The owner's latte adorable art is known to give customers warm and fuzzy feelings.

モーニングの文化は大阪にもありますが、それが新潟にもあるのはいいですね。初めて行きましたが席は昔風のソファできちんと真ん中に座らないと木枠でお尻が痛い。きちんと座っても変に沈み込むので快適でとは言えない。なので長居するには厳しいと思った。レジに立つと横の喫煙エリアの自動扉が開いて煙とニオイが流れてくる。今時全面禁煙するといいのにね。
