Kanagawa Pref. Ashigarashimogunhakonemachi Motohakone Goten 9-1
A bakery and restaurant located near Motohakone Port on the shore of Lake Ashi in Hakone Town, Ashigarashimo County, Kanagawa Prefecture. Here visitors can enjoy flavorful breads made with select ingredients while gazing out over beautiful Lake Ashi. The bakery shop on the first floor sells several varieties of daily fresh-baked breads which can be brought home or eaten with a cup of coffee poured by one of the baristas in the second floor café. The third floor is a casual open kitchen restaurant serving sandwiches, galettes, and a full menu of other items which make full use of the delicious in-house breads. There’s also a footbath in the terrace seating area on the first floor for visitors to enjoy.

We were pleasantly surprised that on this, our fourth trip to Japan, that the bakery goods were more varied and delicious. This three story bakery in little Moto-Hakone leads them all. The first...

    Kanagawa Pref. Ashigarashimogunhakonemachi Miyagino 170
A small coffee shop located in Hakone Town, Ashigarashimo County, Kanagawa Prefecture with a charming, old-fashioned, and homey atmosphere. The shop boasts food that is both delicious and hearty in portion, with the most popular item on the menu being the bread gratin. This dynamic dish involves a meaty seafood gratin baked inside a whole hollowed-out loaf of bread from the venerable Watanabe Bakery in Hakone. The creamy sauce goes perfectly with the toasty flavor of the bread, and fans travel from far and wide to enjoy the meal. The shop has an abundant selection of other “yoshoku” Japanese-style “Western” dishes such as sticky omelet rice and Neapolitan spaghetti.

Kanagawa prefecture acts as an extension of the Tokyo metropolis that spills over into coastal towns, most notably Yokohama city, heavily populated and known for its Chinatown and seaside attractions. Just the right distance for a day trip out of Tokyo, Kanagawa is home to some of Tokyo’s most accessible beaches, including around Kamakura, best known for its Big Buddha. Visitors can also travel a little farther afield for a weekend at Hakone onsen town.
