The shop is located on the approach to Goryo-jinja Shrine, which is dedicated to the superhumanly strong Kamakura Gongoro Kagemasa, hence the shop’s name, which references chikara mochi, rice cakes said to fortify the body, and the Japanese term for someone who is strong. Chikaramochiya’s delicately flavored sweets, carefully homemade without additives, have been popular since the Edo period. The shop’s famed Gongoro chikara mochi are made with smooth strained sweet adzuki bean paste wrapped in mochi rice cake. If you will be eating them the same day, be sure to get the “nama” or fresh type, made with freshly pounded mochi. The gyuhi (rice flour) type keeps for three days and makes a great souvenir.

Just the right distance for a day trip out of Tokyo, Kanagawa is home to some of Tokyo’s most accessible beaches, including around Kamakura, best known for its Big Buddha. Visitors can also travel a little farther afield for a weekend at Hakone onsen town.
