- The military commander, Kanu who was famous for the “Annals of the Three Kingdoms” was deified and is a symbol of Chinatown worshiped as the god of prosperous businesses. In 1859, Japan opened to the world and the port of Yokohama also opened. Three years later, a Chinese person opened a small modest shrine while holding a wooden Kanu statue. This is said to be the beginning of the Yokohama Kantei-Byo Shrine. The first generation was built in the Meiji period, and the current one which was rebuilt in 1990 is the fourth one to be built. - Owakudani is valley that was created by a volcanic eruption of Mt. Kami around 3,000 years ago. Owakudani is situated at 1,044 meters above sea level, and experiences severe weather, so it is advisable to wear long-sleeved clothing even in summer. The area is still affected by volcanic activity; steam and volcanic gases such as hydrogen sulfide continue to rise up out of the ground. Kuro-tamago, the “Black Eggs” of Owakudani, which are made by exposing eggs to the geothermal heat and chemical reactions resulting from volcanic activity, are very popular with visitors.

- This is a Jodoshu (Pure Land sect of Buddhism) temple in Ogigayatsu, Kamakura City. Its honorific mountain name is Tokozan and it is Kamakura’s only nunnery, founded by the nun Eisho-in. It was called the Mito Palace and the Mito Convent since daughters of the Mito clan served as the chief nun in the times before the Meiji period. Several areas on the temple grounds have been designated as Important Cultural Properties, including the temple building, which bears the vestiges from the time of its establishment, the main temple gate, and the belfry.

The Chigasaki Southern C monument, which also was featured on the cover of a popular band’s CD album cover, is popular as a spot to offer luck in matchmaking. Toilets and showers are available. During the summer, beach houses offer rentals of parasols and body boards and also sell original food items.

- The gentle slopes of the Sengokuhara area are covered with Japanese pampas grass and Sengokuhara is considered a top Hakone sightseeing destination in fall. Selected for such lists as “Kanagawa’s 50 Most Picturesque Spots” and “Kanagawa’s 100 Most Famous Flower Locations,” each year in autumn the area bustles with visitors. From late September, the ears of the pampas grass begin to turn color, and by late autumn visitors can enjoy the site of a veritable golden carpet covering the fields. The Sengokuhara Pampas Grass Festival is held in the area in late September each year. Take the Hakone Tozan Bus and get off at the “Sengoku Kogen” stop. In fall, a Sengokuhara Susuki Bus provides transportation to the area.

- "A temple on the upper reaches of the Osawa River dedicated to the deity Benzaiten. It got its name because the cascade basin there is shaped like a large kettle (ogama). Benzaiten was enshrined there in order to pray for rain. Thought by some to be a particularly effective ""power spot"" (place of mystical or healing earth energy), it's also one of the city's coolest places in the summer. There's also a stone statue of a serpent with a human head. Legend says that Benzaiten had a serpent as a messenger, and at some point, the deity and the messenger became one."

One can enjoy the flora of violet, clover, and sakura in the spring, the green of the rice paddies in the summer, and the golden colored ears of rice and crimson foliage in the autumn, providing beautiful scenery for every season. In addition, the Minami Ward Cherry Blossom Festival is held during the blossom season, featuring carnival booths and stalls that sell produce.

- Cedar Avenue is a roughly 500 meter stretch of the Old Hakone Highway from Motohakone in Hakone Town, Ashigarashimo County, Kanagawa Prefecture, to Onshihakone Park. On either side of the path are more than 400 cedar trees which are close to 400 years old. The trees were apparently planted by Matsudaira Masatsuna, the Lord of Kawagoe Castle, in 1618 in order to protect travelers walking along the highway from the strong sunshine and cold winds. The lines of trees which exist today are designated as a National Historic Site. It’s one of the most well known places in Hakone and one where you can still imagine what it was like on the old Tokaido Road.

- A riverside park just across the Ajisai Bridge from the Hakone Yumoto Hot Spring Town. From early June to July large numbers of fireflies appear in the park resulting in a wondrous visual spectacle. Thanks to the Odakyu Romance Car train line from Shinjuku Station the park is easy to get to and lots of visitors come to view the fireflies when they're in season. There was a period where the fireflies stopped appearing but thanks to the efforts of local volunteers their habitat was restored. Now you can see nearly 500 fireflies flitting about the riverside.

- Enoshima Ohashi Bridge is a vehicle overpass connecting Enoshima with the mainland. Enoshima Ohashi has been jointly selected as one of the 100 most beautiful bridges of Kanagawa together with the adjoining pedestrian Enoshima Benten Bridge. Enoshima Ohashi Bridge was along with Enoshima Yacht Harbor for the yachting competitions held during the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Normally, there is nothing but ocean under the bridge, but during low tides, the seabed becomes exposed, forming a tombolo which connects Enoshima directly to the mainland.

During the “Motozawa Baien Festival” held to coincide with the blossoming season in March, events are held, such as selling of specialty products. In June, you can experience picking plum fruits.
Kanagawa Areas
Kanagawa prefecture acts as an extension of the Tokyo metropolis that spills over into coastal towns, most notably Yokohama city, heavily populated and known for its Chinatown and seaside attractions. Just the right distance for a day trip out of Tokyo, Kanagawa is home to some of Tokyo’s most accessible beaches, including around Kamakura, best known for its Big Buddha. Visitors can also travel a little farther afield for a weekend at Hakone onsen town.
