This is a Japanese tea house with 400years of tradition located in a dangerous spot of the Tokaido road, halfway up Mt. Hakone. During the Edo period, the tea house was used as a rest area before the Hakone checking station, while nowadays it is more familiar as a rest area for hikers walking through Hakone. The production process for “amazake” (a traditional Japanese drink made from fermented rice) has remained unchanged since ancient times, using koji (rice malt) has been used in the fermentation process since the Edo period; the amazake is non-alcoholic, has a gentle sweetness even though it is produced without sugar, so it has been used to good advantage by travelers to get rid of fatigue. There are also packs of amazake which you can buy to take home. One of the shop’s specialties is also “Chikara-mochi” (a glutinous rice cake) which is gently baked over charcoal until it puffs up.

Our guide took us to this chaya for amazake. Its the only remaining chaya in the area with an old building from the Edo era. Worth a stop to see the building and a taste of old Japan.

This is a popular Japanese-style sweet shop on the road from Kamakura Station west exit to Zeniarai Benzaiten Shrine. Guests of any age can spend a relaxing time in the simple, refined interior. The courtyard is a Japanese-style garden with benches and arbors. They make each person’s sweet to order, and with this freshness comes a unique elasticity and pleasant feeling of the sweet going down one’s throat. The easy-to-eat “kuzukiri” (kudzu starch noodles) with refreshingly sweet black sugar is a popular option.

This is an old Japanese teahouse established in 1968, around a five-minute walk from the entrance of Komachi-dori Street from Kamakura Station. Rebuilt in 2011, it nevertheless retains the calm and refined atmosphere of the time. The most popular choice is “cream anmitsu” (syrup-covered bean jam) where one can choose ice cream topped with vanilla or matcha powdered tea. The “Ogura Shiratama,” where one can eat many freshly-made doughy shiratama (rice dumplings) is another popular option.

A café and sweet shop inside a renovated home located in a quiet residential neighborhood an eight-minute walk from Kamakura Station’s West Exit. This famous shop’s anmitsu (syrup-covered sweet bean jam and fruit), topped with giant, chewy shiratama flour dumplings made with your order, is particularly popular, and both Japanese and international tourists alike line up to enjoy it. With selections like the Uji shiratama cream anmitsu, covered with matcha syrup, and Shiratama fruit cream anmitsu, topped with piles of fruit, you’ll have a tough time choosing.

    Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture Yuigahama 3-2-13
This unusual Japanese café and sweet shop requires visitors to cross the tracks of the Enoshima Electric Railway at Wadazuka Station, despite the lack of a proper railway crossing point. The café’s garden blooms with seasonal flowers such as Japanese apricot, chrysanthemum, and camellias, which, together with the Enoshima Electric Railway running just beyond, creates a stunning bit of scenery. The shop’s mamekan (a sweet dish of peas with kanten jelly) is particularly popular and lovingly prepared with red peas from Hokkaido slowly stewed over three days without breaking the skin. The shop also offers seasonal items such as the summer-only Shiratama azuki (sweet adzuki beans with mochi) and the winter-only inaka shiruko (old fashioned sweet adzuki bean soup) and ankoro mochi (mochi wrapped in sweet adzuki bean paste).

The shop interior based on white has gentle curves which give it an atmosphere like that of a museum. This Japanese-style sweets cafe stands along an alley off of Komachi-dori Street a two-minute walk from JR Kamakura Station. The cafe's vaunted sweet oshiruko red bean soup, made with plenty of azuki beans, is made according to the same recipe as when the establishment first opened its doors. The cafe's chunky, country-style inaka shiruko is made using Dainagon azuki beans stewed and constantly observed by the proprietress for two hours; the cafe's most popular product, customers can enjoy the innate flavor of the beans and a sweetness that is not overwhelming. The cafe's shiruko comes with green tea and palate-cleansing Japanese pickles. Here customers can enjoy the delicious flavor of azuki beans in a variety of ways; in addition to a smooth and creamy Gozen Shiruko soup, the cafe also serves koriazuki and Ujikintoki shaved ice with azuki beans, perfect for a hot summer day; and anmitsu sweet beans and fruit in syrup topped with whipped cream.
