    The home location of Toshimaya, a sweet shop which sells the classic Kamakura souvenir, the hato sablé. The hato sablé (“pigeon cookie,” named after its shape) was first made in 1897. The rich, buttery flavor has long been one of Kamakura’s go-to souvenirs. Located close to the Ni no Torii gate on Wakamiya Oji, the Toshimaya here also sells hato sablé goods found nowhere else.

    This is a taiyaki (fish-shaped pancake filled with bean jam) shop located along Yuigahama Odori, about three minutes on foot from Enoshima Dentetsu’s Yuigahama Station. Not only do they offer taiyaki made with carefully crafted honey-baked tsubuan (coarse red bean paste) and fresh, velvety smooth koshian (fine-grained sweet bean paste), they also have a full lineup of other items including natural yeast bread, yakisoba, and grilled piroshky. Guests will take joy in the sight of people in the neighborhood naturally congregate here to enjoy conversation with the jovial proprietor.

    鎌倉のお土産に「くるみっ子」を頂きました。 贅沢に胡桃が入っていて、歯応えがほど良く、美味しかったです。

    A small yet historic Japanese confection shop located along the Kamakura Kaido a one-minute walk from Kita-Kamakura Station. The name of the shop’s meika agari yokan (sweet bean jelly) references the fact that these treats were once presented to the Owari branch of the Tokugawa clan in the Edo period. Made without the use of artificial preservatives or other additives, these yokan have an intermediate texture between soft and hard yokan jellies and are characterized by their elegant flavor. They are also known to sell out as early as before noon. Shokado also sells unique, limited time items from October to May, such as the kuri-iri kojika (steamed castella cake with sweet adzuki beans) and kiku monaka (chrysanthemum wafer cake with sweet bean jam).

    A Japanese confectionary shop famous for its Enoden monaka (wafer cakes filled with sweet adzuki bean jam), which feature an Enoshima Electric Railway (Enoden) train on the package. The front of the shop incorporates a portion of a real Enoshima Electric Railway train, serving as the shop’s symbol. The monaka are available with five different bean jams—yuzu, ume (Japanese plum), sesame seed, strained bean, and coarse bean. It’s 130 yen for one monaka, but there’s also a set of 10 for 1,300 yen which comes in a box modeled after Fujisawa Station, perfect to give as a souvenir. The shop also offers a variety of other Japanese sweets, including kuzu-zakura (bean jam covered with kudzu starch jelly and wrapped in a cherry tree leaf), dorayaki (bean jam between two soft cakes) for 130 yen, and kabocha manju (sweet kabocha squash dumplings) for 100 yen.

The warabi mochi starch dumplings are made with rare domestically grown bracken starch, and their chewy yet melt-in-your-mouth texture has delighted many tourists. The shop’s warabi mochi can also be brought home as a souvenir.

    This is a creative Japanese sweet shop close to Hakone Yumoto Station famous for its Hakone Moon sweets, a typical Hakone hot spring manju buns. These are a superb product made with Okinawan brown sugar and the famous “Salt of Life” as named by Okinawa local dialect as well as adzuki beans from Tokachi, Hokkaido then gently steamed. Other popular products include chestnut manju buns called Moon Rabbits and pure butter dorayaki red bean pancakes called Odakyu Rabbits.

The shop is famous for its mineral spring senbei rice crackers, which are grilled one at a time and made with mineral spring water from a famous local Miyanoshita spring, wheat flour, and rice flour. This delectable sweet is characterized by its crisp, light, Japanese cookie-like texture and elegant sweetness. The design on the can label has remained unchanged since 1880, and many love the cute, retro package.

    This is a hand-baked sembei (rice cracker) shop located in a spot that is approximately a two-minute walk after proceeding on the road in front of Hakone-Yumoto Station. The sembei are grilled by hand one at a time in front of the shop and are practically a gourmet item that can be eaten on the go, and the Nori-maki Sembei in which fresh-baked sembei are wrapped in seaweed are popular. The cute heart-shaped sembei are popular among women. Inside the shop are many products that have been gift-packaged, and there is an abundant mix of flavor variations including soy sauce, miso, zarame (granulated sugar), shiso (perilla or beefsteak plant), and Nurekari-mochi which are nuresembei (soft, moist sembei) that have been dried for several days.

These tasty Japanese-style treats, made with carefully selected ingredients by methods unchanged since the founding of the shop, make popular souvenirs and gifts. The most famous product is Mount Kintoki Manju, a thin white dough jammed full of sweetened bean paste. It is named after a famous local historical person, Sakata Kintoki, who was the model for the folk hero Kintaro.

    お店の名前のとおり芋を使ったお菓子などがいろいろ売られていました。紫芋ソフトクリームなど有名なようですが、冬だったので、紫芋コロッケを注文しました。中は本当に紫色になっていておいしかったです。食べ歩きにもちょうどよい感じでした。

Kanagawa prefecture acts as an extension of the Tokyo metropolis that spills over into coastal towns, most notably Yokohama city, heavily populated and known for its Chinatown and seaside attractions. Just the right distance for a day trip out of Tokyo, Kanagawa is home to some of Tokyo’s most accessible beaches, including around Kamakura, best known for its Big Buddha.
