The Hakone Open-Air Museum

Kanagawa Pref. Ashigarashimogunhakonemachi Ninotaira 1121

This was Japan’s first open-air Museum which was founded in 1969. Located on the grounds of a 70,000 meters squared premises with Hakone’s nature as a backdrop, the museum has a permanent display of approximately 120 masterpieces by modern and contemporary sculptors. Such large scale works of art couldn’t be displayed but for the outdoor space; there are also works of art which children can enter and play in, and you can touch the pieces of art as much as you want. At the Picasso Pavilion, there is the world’s top collection of 300 plus works which are open to the public. The hot spring foot bath which flows from the source is also popular. Alight at the Hakone Tozan Railway at Chokoku-no-Mori Station, from which it is a two-minute walk to the museum.

About an eight-minute walk from either the Bashamichi Station or the Nihon-odori Station on the Minatomirai Line, this free museum presents the current status of the coastal waters around Japan, and the materials on the importance of marine security. Inside the museum visitors are introduced via a panel display to the job of the Japan Coast Guard, its patrol boats and airplanes. Preserved and on exhibit is a spy ship that was self-exploded and sunk, along with a small watercraft and weapons that were recovered from 90 meters under the sea after the December 22, 2001 case of the Kyushu Southwest Seawaters Incident.

A museum located in Hakone Town, Ashigarashimo County, Kanagawa Prefecture operated by the Fujiya Hotel Chain which exhibits materials related to the Hakone Ekiden, a relay marathon held near New Year’s and a much-anticipated seasonal event in Japan. In addition to introducing the history of the Hakone Ekiden, the museum displays rare pictures and moving images taken during every event, from the very first Hakone Ekiden to the most recent; items used by famous runners; Hakone yosegizaiku mosaic woodwork trophies; and little-known details which resulted in the victory or defeat of certain teams. There’s also a theater where visitors can re-experience the thrills of past events, and a special exhibition area. Nearest bus stations: “Hakone-machi” on the Izu Hakone Bus or “Hakone-machi-ko” on the Hakone Tozan Bus / Tokai Bus routes.

Adjoining TVK Housing Plaza Yokohama, visitors to this English-style garden can enjoy 1,700 varieties of roses and seasonal blooming plants. A free shuttle bus operates from the west exit of Yokohama Station. The Sogo Museum of Art is located on the sixth floor of the Sogo Yokohama Department Store in Yokohama's Nishi Ward. It was the first department store based museum in Japan to be based on the Museum Law. Its holdings include about 200 oils and watercolors by the Western-style painter Shintaro Suzuki, and it exhibits art in a wide variety of genres, including Western-style art, traditional Japanese-style art, folk crafts, sculpture, prints, books, and photos from Japan and overseas.

At this center, information of Hakone's environs are exhibited through small geological models and high definition videos. Various events are held regularly where one can learn about the flora and fauna. Mini observation sessions, and four-seasons observation workshops where one can experience the season with all five senses, are some that are offered. The whole facility is barrier-free and disabled person friendly.

The Staff is friendly and knows about the whole area and very helpful. He could answer all of our questions and more.

A museum dedicated to dolls located a five minute walk from Motomachi-Chukagai Station on the Minatomirai Line. The only doll museum in the nation, the museum’s collection includes over 10,000 dolls gathered from over 100 countries around the world. Some 3,500 dolls are displayed as part of the museum’s standing exhibition, including folk dolls from around the globe such as friendship dolls, antique dolls, and native Japanese dolls. In addition to puppet shows, the museum also holds piano concerts for adults to enjoy, workshops, and special exhibitions of cartoon and videogame-related character dolls, which has earned the museum many fans.

Really enjoyed seeing so many different dolls from around the world and the history of friendship dolls. Lovely staff member served me today.

Located near Gora Station, the last stop on the Hakone Tozan Railway, Hakone Gora Park was Japan’s first French-style garden. The Park, which was opened in 1914, is a National Registered Monument. The museum exhibits approximately 9,500 works of art collected over a number of decades by Mr. Tsuneshi Suzuki, the owner of the Paula Orbis group known for Paula cosmetics. The collection of Impressionists’ work is also said to be the greatest in both quality and quantity in Japan. The architecture overflows with a translucent quality due to the abundant amount of glass used which is a feature of the museum, and art can be appreciated in the abundant greenery and light which shines in through the enormous picture windows. This science center is located in 1-Chome, Suigotana, Chuo Ward, Sagamihara City. They have exhibits focusing mainly on wildlife living in the Sagami River area. It features a “River Zone” centered around river fish, a “Life Zone” which has exhibits of rare lifeforms including amphibians and Tokyo bitterling which is designated as nationally protected species, and a “People Zone” which describes the interactions between people and the river through panels. Kanagawa prefecture acts as an extension of the Tokyo metropolis that spills over into coastal towns, most notably Yokohama city, heavily populated and known for its Chinatown and seaside attractions.
