    A Western-style restaurant founded in 1957 with an old-style Japanese atmosphere and flavors that recall the good-old days. Their house specialty demi-glace is prepared over the course of several days and features in their hamburger steaks and beef stew. The rich, sophisticated flavor also goes perfectly with their soft-boiled rice omelets. They have an ample drink menu that accents their fare, including a selection of beer and wine, as well as shochu spirits and sour cocktails. The popular store has even won the Machida Watashi no Sukina Omise Taisho (our favorite shop award).

    The site where the remains of stone-floored dwellings were first discovered in Japan in 1925. Located in southwestern Machida City, the Kogasaka Stone Age Ruins consists of three sites that made up a Jomon period village: the Roba Ruins, Inariyama Ruins, and Hachimandaira Ruins. The stone-floor dwellings from the middle Jomon period discovered at the Roba Ruins can be viewed through the glass of a roofed shelter. Designated a National Historic Site, this was the first of the ruins to be discovered and is valuable to archaeological research on ancient habitation structures.

    With Yokohama City to the south and Kawasaki City to the west, Miwa-machi in Machida City is known for its many tombs. More than 100 tunnel graves have been found in the surrounding area. Discovered near the Takusanjo Castle Ruins in 1959, the Miwa Shirasaka Tunnel Graves consists of 13 tombs. Simple graves dug horizontally into the cliffside, they are thought to have been made in the seventh century. A fence at the entrance prevents access to the interior, but two of the thirteen graves can be viewed from there.

    "A group of four tunnel graves in a hillside presumed to be from the late Kofun period. The Miwa / Nogaya area of Machida City has a concentration of these tombs, consisting of simple graves dug horizontally into a slope. More than 100 tunnel graves have been found in the surrounding area. While other ""house-style"" tombs have ""house-style"" ceilings, two tombs out of four at this site have ceiling reliefs. House-style tunnel graves are extremely rare, and these are the only two that have been discovered in Tokyo. An unimproved trail leads to the site."

    The Miwa / Nogaya area of Machida City has a concentration of tunnel graves, consisting of simple tombs dug horizontally into a cliff. Discovered in 1959 and one of several groups of such tombs, nine graves have been discovered at the Nishiyato Tunnel Graves thus far. They are presumed to have been dug around the seventh century. They are cordoned off by sturdy metal fencing, but visitors can view the site from there. Artifacts like iron arrowheads and glass beads have been excavated, and a keitonotachi sword unearthed there; the only of its kind found in the city, it has been registered a municipal Cultural Property.
  • Tabata Stone Circle

    A stone circle discovered in 1968 during the cultivation of a field. It is presumed to have been a ritual site created in the late Jomon period between 3,500 and 2,800 years ago. The nine by seven-meter circle was built on a graveyard consisting of 30 tombs. Currently it's been re-buried for preservation purposes, but a replica is available for viewing. About five minutes on foot from Tamasakai Station on the Keio Sagamihara Line, it is the closest stone circle to a train station in Japan, and the only Jomon period stone circle in the Tokyo area.
  • Oyamada 1 Go Ruins

    Located in northern Machida City, the Oyamada Ruins is an archeological site that was discovered in 1970 during the construction of the Oyamada Sakuradai housing complex. Site 1 at the northernmost point of the ruins preserves the remains of prominent samurai residences dating from the late Heian to the Muromachi periods. The Oyamada clan of the Chichibu-Heishi lineage's residence is at the center of this area, where multiple medieval sites have been discovered. Currently, the remains are covered with a layer of glass fiber and resin cement, preserving the residence's condition and giving a sense of how it looked when discovered.

Fill out their check sheet and you'll find a tea that's just right for your constitution. Products include Allergy Free Tea, Anti-Aging Tea, Cholesterol Free Tea, and more. They also hold workshops involving their products.

    A late Edo period building in Machida's Nozuta Park. Originally located along the city's Tsurumi River, it was donated to Machida before being transferred to and rebuilt at its current location. Tsuneemon Murano was one of the Tama district's leading democracy activists. He was born in the house, and it underwent major renovations in 1924 when its thatched roof was replaced with iron plating. This is the building you see at the park today. A typical residence of the times, it also has furniture from the era on display, giving a feel for life in the Meiji period.

    A specialty store near the Sakai River flowing along the border between Tokyo and Kanagawa. They offer their own additive-free jams. Varieties include blueberry, strawberry, and carrot. Using only fruit or vegetables and sugar, they're slowly cooked down to preserve the tastiness of the ingredients without relying on pectin, gelling agents, thickeners, etc. Their blueberry sauce has a deep-fruit flavor; made with only Machida-grown blueberries, this gem was certified a Machida Local Specialty in 2016.

    A bar with live music that also features a cafe and a culture school. The cozy wooden space holds live music performances and music lessons with a focus on folk and world music. Made with domestic mochi rice and naturally brewed soy sauce, people say you can't eat just one. They offer three flavors: soy sauce, miso, and karashi mustard miso. The long shelf life makes them great for gifts or souvenirs.

    A patisserie located in a quiet, green residential area of Narusedai. With a cheerful, eye-catching facade and a bright blue awning, the shop strives for outstanding flavor in their products. Their popular Egg Custard features fresh Okukuji eggs. The cute and popular treats are presented in actual eggshells, sold in the egg cartons you find in supermarkets. The custard is available year-round, with seasonal flavors like matcha in spring and summer and pumpkin in autumn and winter.

    A horseback riding club with lots of greenery and good access, located one hour by train from Shinjuku and Yokohama and ten minutes from Hachioji. In a quiet forest that's hard to imagine is still Tokyo, they have three practice grounds and a small trekking course. The club places a special emphasis on interacting with the horses; they hold programs where guests learn through contact with them about the importance of nature and living creatures, as well as the bonds and compassion among friends. Under the guidance of highly experienced staff that includes A-class riders and national dressage judges, even beginners can try riding with confidence.

    A bread shop with a peaked roof on the Machida Highway. Since they opened, they've been trying to create new varieties of baked goods while maintaining a cozy atmosphere and the feel of an old-fashioned bakery. Their popular Whole Apple Cake has been featured on TV, in magazines, and in other media. The ample item features an entire apple soaked in rum with a custard cream middle baked inside an apple shaped cake. The shop sets up a stand at various events in Tokyo and Kanagawa.

    A blueberry farm in Aihara-machi at the westernmost edge of Machida City. Visitors pick their large blueberries on a farm lush with greenery. Typically starting in early June, they have a pay by weight system, determining what you've picked when you're finished. There are also hiking trails around the farm, so you can enjoy the forest while harvesting. For limited periods they also sell cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplants, and Moroccan green beans, all cultivated in the open. Lots of families bring boxed lunches and enjoy a full day out while visiting Aihara Central Park next door with its flower gardens and lawn area.

    "A natural tofu shop run by With Machida, a social welfare service corporation. The shop has a green sign that says, ""tofu is a vegetable"" in Japanese. They make and sell products like tofu, fried tofu, pudding, and donuts. Their range of tofu varieties made with domestically grown soybeans including their hallmark soft kinugoshi and firmer momen tofu, drained zaru tofu, and half-curdled oboro tofu with soymilk. Their tofu is handmade to bring out the inherent flavor of the beans and is produced with natural Okinawa produced brine. Their popular tofu donuts are nice and chewy and often sell out."

    A local butcher shop founded in 1960 selling fresh, reasonably priced meat. Their specialty is purchasing pork after inspection while the swine is still alive. The shop's chicken, beef, and processed foods are always taste tested before being offered for sale, and so the shop has earned a reputation for safe, reliable, delicious meat. They also have lots of fried items available and supply local schools and popular city restaurants. Their popular fried patties are available in limited quantities of 40 per day.
