SKY CIRCUS Sunshine60 Observatory is an enclosed observatory located in Ikebukuro’s landmark high-rise building, Sunshine60. Opening after renovations in April of 2016, the observatory’s facility offers an experience that is a fusion of the view and technology. Centerpiece attractions include TOKYO BULLET FLIGHT which uses VR and the latest 4D technology to see the future Tokyo from the sky, the swing-like experience coaster SWING COASTER and the SKY HALL where one can view the ground surface from the glass floor. Visitors can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view from a height of 251 meters above sea level. Advance reservations can be made on the Internet.

If you find yourself in Sunshine City Ikebukuro, this is the observatory at the top. The place is built with interactive installations through the walk around the building but I think the best view...

3-15-20 Miscellaneous Shogo Gorge Toshima-ku, Tokyo
A shrine which worships Kishimojin, the goddess of easy childbirth and child rearing. The name of the shrine’s famed osen dango (sweet dumplings) is a play on words—Kishimojin had one thousand (sen) children (ko – changed to “go” in dango), and thus these little treats also serve as a prayer to be blessed with children. The gingko trees on the shrine grounds are said to be some 700 years old and have been designated Natural Monuments by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. The Oeshiki Taisai festival commemorating the Buddhist priest Nichiren’s death is held at the shrine each year from October 16 to 18. During the festival, the approach to the shrine is lined with bustling street stalls.

Kishimojin (Hariti) was originally a Persian (Iran) child eating demon, who converted to Buddhism and wowed to protect the faithful and especially children. This deity is hence very popular among...

    Tokyo Nerima-ku Shimoshakuji 4-7-2
An art museum standing along Metropolitan Road 245 in Shimoshakujii, Nerima City. The museum displays works by Chihiro Iwasaki, a painter with a home and studio in Shimoshakujii known for her watercolors and picture books depicting children. The museum also holds exhibitions on related themes.

The Zoshigaya Cemetery opened in 1874 as one of Tokyo’s municipal cemeteries. Occupying extensive grounds in Minami-Ikebukuro, closed to the bustling commercial district of Ikebukuro, the Cemetery is a quiet place where the only sound is the chirping of the birds. Many leading cultural figures are buried here, including Natsume Soseki, Nagai Kafu, Koizumi Yakumo, Takehisa Yumeji, and Nakahama Manjiro (John Manjiro). There are several flights of stone steps within the Cemetery leading up to elevated platforms; from these platforms, the views out over the streets of Zoshigaya are very atmospheric. Visitors to Zoshigaya Cemetery in autumn can see the beautiful red leaves of the Gingko trees.

After visiting Yanaka Cemeteries where cherry blossoms were in full bloom, we came to Zoshigaya Cemeteries surrounded by greeneries. It’s another cemeteries administered by the city of Tokyo. As...

This facility where you can experience authentic disaster prevention in an urban area is located a five-minute walk from Ikebukuro Station. With a tour-type program led by an instructor, you can go on three types of experiences: earthquakes, smoke and fire extinguishing. The fire extinguishing corner where you can experience fighting a realistic fire projected on a large screen uses recycled water. You can experience discharging water using indoor fire hydrants and standpipes that you do not normally use. Groups of 10 or more people can also experience the disaster training drill corner, where you create roads, rivers and danger information on a map, allowing you to recheck your ability to manage disasters and sense danger.

I come from a country with no major natural disaster. Is an eye opener for me. The staff are extremely friendly.

This museum, located inside Sunshine City in Ikebukuro, is Japan's first dedicated to displaying materials on the ancient Orient. Designed to be a facility where visitors can learn about history by actually seeing it, exhibits include stone tools used by ancient peoples, recreations and models of ancient settlements, clay vessels and handicrafts exchanged between East and West excavated from archeological digs, and numerous priceless artefacts exhumed in Syria. There's also a movie room where you can watch a short video summarizing the history of the area from the origins of civilization through to the time of the Silk Road. The museum's shop sells original merchandise.

The Ancient Orient Museum is poorly named as we discovered. We visited in the hope of seeing more oriental exhibits but the vast majority of artefacts on display are from the Middle East and not...

    Tokyo Toshima-ku Minami-Ikebukuro 3-18-18
This ancient temple is said to have been founded in 810 during the reign of Emperor Saga. After receiving an official seal from Tokugawa Iemitsu, the third shogun, this historic location has been frequented by many that were high up in the Tokugawa lineage. The path toward the Sanmon Gate is noted for its famous cherry blossom trees that have been around since the Edo era. This spot is now one of Ikebukuro's foremost cherry blossom viewing destinations, which brings in large crowds every spring.

    こちらは、池袋駅東口より徒歩15分にあります。 立派な山門を入ると正面には、これまた立派な本堂がどーんと構えています。左手には鐘桜があり境内全体が静寂に包まれていました。

A one minute walk from Higashi-Ikebukuro Station on the Yurakucho subway line. Here you can commune with art and culture in a comfortable space which harmonizes with the surrounding trees and plants in the museum's garden. The museum building, a symbol of the area, was built by American missionary John Moody McCaleb in 1907 to serve as his home. It is the oldest modern-style Western wooden structure in Toshima City and has been designated a Tangible Cultural Property by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. The fireplace decorated with art nouveau-style tile, the bamboo slat latticework, and other beautiful architectural touches and furnishings implemented with attention to material as well as design all convey the history of the home.

One of Japan's greatest mystery writers, Edogawa moved here in 1934 and stayed in the residence until his death. The residence is open to the public only on Wednesdays and Fridays; entry is free. "This Edo lantern shop is located a three-minute walk from Zoshigaya Station. This shop has passed down its traditional techniques for more than a hundred years and has worked on the lanterns displayed at the main hall of the Kishimojin Shrine in Zoshigaya. On the other hand, the shop is also creating new works using unique designs. Works such as ""Sake Bottle Lanterns"" which are made of Japanese washi paper and plastic bags with Edo-style characters (a style with narrow space between characters in which the writing goes upwards to the right) and drawings on them as well as the ""Original Lantern"", all of which carry the appearance of works of art."

Tokyo Areas

around-area-map

The setting of countless iconic movie scenes and the inspiration for songs, poetry, and literature worldwide, Tokyo barely requires an introduction. It’s hard for the kaleidoscopic neon lights, wacky pop culture, and some of the world’s tallest structures not to instill excitement in any first-time visitor to Tokyo, whether you’re in the very center of the hustle and bustle in Shinjuku or Shibuya or looking in from the quieter suburbs.
