"This aquarium was designed to be an ""oasis in the sky."" Located inside Sunshine City, an Ikebukuro landmark, in addition to being visited by tourists from across the country and the world, the aquarium is also a favorite destination for couples, friends, families, and people of all ages. Along with exhibits modeled after actual coral reefs, lakes, rivers, and other scenery, the aquarium's new atmospheric jellyfish exhibit, remodeled and reopened on July 9, 2020, is also popular. In the aquarium's outdoor area, visitors can see seals and penguins swimming overhead as if they were flying through the sky."

    Tokyo Itabashi-ku Maenochou 3-41-1
This day-trip onsen facility allows guests to enjoy real hot spring water fed non-stop directly from a natural source while still being in Tokyo. Using a renovated old Japanese home that was built in 1946, the attractive onsen has a relaxed, nostalgic ambience. There are fourteen types of baths with greenish brown mineral water, including the rotenburo (outdoor bath) that is surrounded by greenery, the indoor bath with highly concentrated carbonic spring water, and two saunas. The restaurant is also popular as guests can enjoy soba (Japanese buckwheat noodles) and set meals while gazing out at the kare-san-sui dry landscape that recreates a Showa-era garden. The closest station is Shimura-sakaue Station.

The onsen is just an hour away from Shinjuku by trains. It is small but new and clean. It is not touristic and has less people there, so it is quiet and relaxing. A few outdoor hot baths and a...

3-15-20 Miscellaneous Shogo Gorge Toshima-ku, Tokyo
A shrine which worships Kishimojin, the goddess of easy childbirth and child rearing. The name of the shrine’s famed osen dango (sweet dumplings) is a play on words—Kishimojin had one thousand (sen) children (ko – changed to “go” in dango), and thus these little treats also serve as a prayer to be blessed with children. The gingko trees on the shrine grounds are said to be some 700 years old and have been designated Natural Monuments by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. The Oeshiki Taisai festival commemorating the Buddhist priest Nichiren’s death is held at the shrine each year from October 16 to 18. During the festival, the approach to the shrine is lined with bustling street stalls.

Kishimojin (Hariti) was originally a Persian (Iran) child eating demon, who converted to Buddhism and wowed to protect the faithful and especially children. This deity is hence very popular among...

The Zoshigaya Cemetery opened in 1874 as one of Tokyo’s municipal cemeteries. Occupying extensive grounds in Minami-Ikebukuro, closed to the bustling commercial district of Ikebukuro, the Cemetery is a quiet place where the only sound is the chirping of the birds. Many leading cultural figures are buried here, including Natsume Soseki, Nagai Kafu, Koizumi Yakumo, Takehisa Yumeji, and Nakahama Manjiro (John Manjiro). There are several flights of stone steps within the Cemetery leading up to elevated platforms; from these platforms, the views out over the streets of Zoshigaya are very atmospheric. Visitors to Zoshigaya Cemetery in autumn can see the beautiful red leaves of the Gingko trees.

This facility where you can experience authentic disaster prevention in an urban area is located a five-minute walk from Ikebukuro Station. With a tour-type program led by an instructor, you can go on three types of experiences: earthquakes, smoke and fire extinguishing. The fire extinguishing corner where you can experience fighting a realistic fire projected on a large screen uses recycled water. You can experience discharging water using indoor fire hydrants and standpipes that you do not normally use. Groups of 10 or more people can also experience the disaster training drill corner, where you create roads, rivers and danger information on a map, allowing you to recheck your ability to manage disasters and sense danger.

I come from a country with no major natural disaster. Is an eye opener for me. The staff are extremely friendly.

The setting of countless iconic movie scenes and the inspiration for songs, poetry, and literature worldwide, Tokyo barely requires an introduction. It’s hard for the kaleidoscopic neon lights, wacky pop culture, and some of the world’s tallest structures not to instill excitement in any first-time visitor to Tokyo, whether you’re in the very center of the hustle and bustle in Shinjuku or Shibuya or looking in from the quieter suburbs.
