A Japanese confectionary shop which continues to explore and evolve while still offering delicious treats unchanged from the time of its establishment in 1930. Sogetsu makes its sweets with select ingredients procured from around the country and without the use of any preservatives. Be sure to try the shop's signature Kuromatsu, an extremely light type of traditional dorayaki.

This confectionery shop has been in operation along the approach to Hiratsuka Shrine since the early Taisho period (1912-1926). In addition to bean-filled daifuku, which was selected as a specialty of Kita Ward, there are always about 20 types of products such as yakidango (toasted dumplings) that appeared in Yasuo Uchida's famous mystery novel. It is also a very important place for fans of Mitsuhiko Asami, the main character of the novel.

"Toden (Tokyo Streetcar) Monaka (bean-jam-filled wafers), which emanated from the thought of ""wanting to leave something concrete about Toden which had been long loved as the mode of transportation of the Tokyo people,"" is a specialty sweet. The store which is located at the entrance of the shopping district always offers over 30 kinds of Japanese confectionery such as seasonal confectionery, classic confectionery and so on. ""Toden Monaka,"" created in 1977, is a representative confectionery with a particular flavor and texture. The palm size monaka is a masterpiece filled with so much sweet red bean paste and rice cake. It is loved by railway enthusiasts nationwide, and at the same time, it received the Health, Labor and Welfare Minister's award at the National Confectionery Exposition. The package, the lid of which makes a board game, is also popular."

Edo Usagi is easy to spot thanks to the cute ghost drawn on the outside of the building. This Japanese dessert store is famous for their Youkai Ichigo Daifuku (ghost strawberry rice cakes) which they make 200-300 of per day! These incredibly popular cute daifuku have the strawberries sticking out of the rice cake to make them look like tongues. They also have Youkai Anzu Daifuku (ghost red-bean rice cakes) and seasonal limited Youkai Water Daifuku.

    Tokyo Arakawa-ku Machiya 1-2-12
A longstanding Japanese confectionary shop beloved since it opened in 1955 located a two-minute walk from the Machiya-ekimae stop on the Toden Arakawa Line. The shop originally just made monaka bean jam wafer cakes and dorayaki bean jam pancake sandwiches, and it still continues to make these tasty treats with fastidious attention to detail today. The shop's Rokuninsyu-yaki dorayaki are made by a team of six people of surpassing skill; customers love their light, fluffy pancakes, and their rich flavor, born of an abundant use of kokuto unrefined brown sugar. Also recommended is the Fukura Suzume, a bun made with domestic flour and parched-barley flour stuffed with sweet smooth bean paste and kanroni candied chestnut.

    Tokyo Arakawa-ku Machiya 1-7-5
"A five-minute walk from the Machiya-ekimae stop on the Toden Arakawa Line. This senbei rice cracker and okaki rice snack shop is situated midway along Otakebashi-dori Street. The shop's signature Onikko Okaki rice snacks, made with rice and water from Fukui, comes in three flavors - standard ""salad;"" spicy shichimi seven spice salad; and simple, old-fashioned soy sauce. On the 10th of every month, the shop holds an ""Onikko Festival,"" and these tasty snacks can be purchased at a reduced price. The shop's senbei rice crackers can be purchased in small bags or even by the single cracker, giving customers the chance to enjoy a wide variety of crackers a little at a time. The shop's teas which go great with senbei are also popular, such as the Tokusen Aramomicha, a deep-steamed green tea from Shizuoka's Makinohara."

"This Japanese confectionery shop was founded in 1938. This shop has not changed since when it was founded, and it continues to create the same traditional confectioneries in front of Nishigahara 4-Chome Station on the Toden Arakawa Line. The shop's Tosa-specialty ""imoyokan"" is a popular product maintaining the natural sweetness of the sweet potato. The product is made of sweet potatoes from Chiba with a sprinkle of sugar and salt, and its simple taste is enjoyed by people of all generations. The imoyokan is sold in department stores around Tokyo, while products such as kurimushi-yokan made of steamed chestnuts and has a soft and chewy texture, and neri yokan, which has a light sweetness and uses a medium coarse sugar, are both only sold at the main store."

This confectionery shop is located in front of the gate to Koganji Temple, also known as the Togenuki Jizoson in Sugamo. This historic store was founded more than 80 years ago, and it sells popular Japanese sweets such as monaka and daifuku. The salt daifuku which has a pleasant chewy and stringy texture has been popular since its founding. It has a nostalgic taste with a slight saltiness which enhances its mild sweetness, with many people purchasing several at once. In addition, the sake manju that is freshly steamed at the store is perfect to eat while walking.

This store is referred to as the origin of the salt daifuku as it was the first to sell salt daifuku in Sugamo. Since it opened in 1937, it has continued to proudly create the salt daifuku that have an addicting perfect combination of sweetness and saltiness. It has been beloved for more than half a century, using azuki beans from Hokkaido and Miyakogane-brand rice from Miyagi, using only salt from the Sea of Japan and a selection of Japanese ingredients. The mochi is thick and has a firm texture as it is pounded in a stone mortar. You can also purchase a special mochi to celebrate your child's first birthday (for store pick-up only).

"This is the main store of Raijindo, a store that specializes in hand-baked senbei rice crackers with stores in 30 different locations, mainly in the Kanto region. It has created and sold traditional Japanese sweets since the Edo period on Sugamo Jizo-dori Shopping Street, which sometimes referred to as the Harajuku for older women. Inside the brightly lit store facing the street, it sells more than a hundred types of senbei in a variety of thickness levels. The freshly baked senbei are not only popular as souvenirs, but also to eat while walking. The Jizo Senbei, in the shape of a Jizo, and a uniquely designed variety called the ""Naire (name-engraved) Senbei"" are popular among foreign tourists."

    Tokyo Kita-ku Ojihoncho 1-23-1
"This Japanese confectionery shop has a long history of over 70 years since its establishment. Oji, where Inari Shrine is located, is a well-known area as ""fox town"" from olden times. While stores and historic spots which are themed with foxes lined up in the town, this shop dares to make ""raccoon dog"" their specialty. Their signature product is ""raccoon dog monaka"" (bean-jam-filled wafers) shaped like cute raccoon dogs. They put bean jam in wafers as they place an order in their system. It has a reputation that you can always enjoy the light crunchiness of wafers. There is no front or back side with this monaka, and it has a raccoon dog's face on both sides. This represents the store's intention of ""doing honest business without being two-faced."""

Tokyo Areas

around-area-map

The setting of countless iconic movie scenes and the inspiration for songs, poetry, and literature worldwide, Tokyo barely requires an introduction. It’s hard for the kaleidoscopic neon lights, wacky pop culture, and some of the world’s tallest structures not to instill excitement in any first-time visitor to Tokyo, whether you’re in the very center of the hustle and bustle in Shinjuku or Shibuya or looking in from the quieter suburbs.
