This venerable sukiyaki and shabu-shabu (Japanese hot pot) restaurant was founded in 1895. A long-standing tendon (tempura rice bowl) restaurant established in 1889 which has continued to serve the same great-tasting meals for 128 years. The restaurant's signature item is its anago garden eel tempura, and Dote no Iseya has a dedicated tank outside the restaurant to ensure customers enjoy only the freshest eel. Taking great care in the oil used to deep fry the tempura, the thick sauce drizzled on top, and the rice served in each bowl, Dote no Iseya serves truly first-rate tendon.

Dote-no-Iseya is not the easiest place to get to but I assure you the trip there was well worth the trip. Anago and unagi are different in that Anago is sea eel while unagi are the fresh water...

Using just sesame oil the tempura with a fragrant smell is eaten with a sauce that has been carefully passed down since the time of it founding. The pure Japanese atmosphere is even loved by non-Japanese as well. Recommended dishes include the tendon rice bowl that uses large juicy shrimp that seem to be flying out of the bowl. 上野へ行った時、ランチの名物びっくり丼を食べたくて行ってみました。あいにく、びっくり丼は既に売り切れていたので、アジ・イワシ・シメサバのヒカリモノ3種丼とアジフライ・カキフライ定食を食べました。新鮮な魚の丼や定食はなかなか美味しく行った甲斐はありましたが、次回は是非びっくり丼を食べてみたいと思いました。
