  • Kachidoki Bridge
    Travel / Tourism
    Tokyo Chuou-ku Tsukiji 6-chome - Kachidoki 1-chome Harumi street
A bridge spanning Tsukiji and Kachidoki in Chuo City, Tokyo on the lower reaches of the Sumida River. The bridge was completed in 1940 and was to serve as the main gate for a world's fair scheduled to be held in Tokyo (which was ultimately suspended due to the war). Kachidoki bridge is a movable bridge able to open up in the middle, and when first built it was the largest of its kind in Asia. As fewer and fewer large boats traveled the Sumida River, however, it became unnecessary to raise the bridge-the last time it was opened was in 1970.

The bridge was built in 1927 as part of a restoration project initiated after the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. The bridge's name is written with a character meaning ""saint"" or ""virtuous"" and is derived from the fact that it connects the Yushima Seido temple and the Holy Resurrection Cathedral, both of whose Japanese names are also written with this character."
  • Mugiyama Floating Bridge
    Travel / Tourism
    Tokyo Nishitama-gun Okutamamachi Kawano
"A floating bridge on Lake Okutama, one of Tokyo's prime water sources. Commonly called the ""Drum Can Bridge,"" it gives visitors the chance to walk across Lake Okutama. The 220-meter-long bridge was built to provide foot access to the far shore at the time the dam was built. Originally drum cans provided flotation, but today this is done with polyethylene and styrofoam. The bridge doesn't sway much or get much spray, so kids can cross safely too. Still, watch your step as there are some gaps."

Tennozu Isle Fureai Bridge is a pedestrians-only bridge linking Tennozu Isle with Konan Park. The Bridge, which opened in 1996, has been used as a filming location for many TV drama series, TV commercials, and movies. At night, the Bridge is illuminated, and the combination of the Bridge and the buildings on Tennozu Isle makes for a spectacular nightscape. Tennozu Isle Fureai Bridge was built using the pin-connected truss construction technique, which is rarely used nowadays, giving the Bridge a distinctly “retro” feel.

  • Omokage-bashi Bridge
    Travel / Tourism
    Tokyo Toshima-ku Takada 2
"This bridge spans the Kanda River, a first-class river in the Arakawa river system. There are many different theories about its history. Some say it is about the currently present Omokagebashi Bridge which is located around the central area of the Kanda River. Others claim that the nostalgic name derives from a legend about the tragedy of a beautiful woman who avenged her murdered husband before throwing herself into the Kanda River. The bridge was the model of artist Utagawa Hiroshige's ""Takada Sugatami no Hashi Omokage no Hashijariba"" It no longer exists, but the area is still one of the best cherry blossom viewing sites and there are many visitors in the spring."

Tokyo Areas

around-area-map

The setting of countless iconic movie scenes and the inspiration for songs, poetry, and literature worldwide, Tokyo barely requires an introduction. It’s hard for the kaleidoscopic neon lights, wacky pop culture, and some of the world’s tallest structures not to instill excitement in any first-time visitor to Tokyo, whether you’re in the very center of the hustle and bustle in Shinjuku or Shibuya or looking in from the quieter suburbs.
