  • Torozakadaishi Kiridoshi Tunnel

    Chiba Pref. Futtsushi Hagiu
This approximately 10-meter high tunnel is on a temple approach road, was dug out by hand from the Meiji period (1868?1912) to the Taisho period (1912?1926), and was undercut using Mt. Nokogiriyama stone cutting techniques at the beginning of the Showa period (1926?1989). There is a legend that Kobo Daishi rested in a detached precinct of Tozenji Temple in the Hagiu area of Futtsu City while on a pilgrimage. They are the only natural water fields which use just rain water for cultivation in Japan, where many rare animals and plants can be found in the surrounding areas. Besides being included in the list of “Japan’s Top 100 Rice Terraces” by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in 1999, it was recognized as a Place of Scenic Beauty in Chiba in 2002.

Chiba Areas

The Boso Peninsula forms the main body of Chiba prefecture, and this is where you’ll find its endless warm water beaches and jagged mountains. Further inland, Narita - most famous as the home of Narita Airport - is a secret haven of tradition and history in the form of centuries-old Shinshoji Temple and quaint wooden Edo buildings. Chiba prefecture is also home to both Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea.
